Hebrew Reading Skills CurriculumA Step by Step Guide to Learning to Read Hebrew
Background
• Hebrew is primarily phonics based• Each letter makes a distinct sound and
must be connected to a vowel• Learning the letters, vowels and a small set
of rules is all that it takes to learn to read Hebrew
• This can be broken up into 9 concrete steps
Steps to Mastering Hebrew Reading1. Learning the sounds of the aleph bet in order2. Learning the sounds of the aleph bet out of
order3. Learning the sounds of the vowels4. Combining the sounds of a letter and a vowel5. Combining the sounds of a letter and a vowel
with another letter (creating a syllable)6. Learning the silent letters7. Learning the rules of the shva8. Learning how to break up words into syllables9. Learning exceptions and special rules
Instructional Notes
• Each step must be mastered before a student moves to the next step
• Creative activities and games help students stay engaged and not give up
• Self assessment activities are vital • Understanding the special vocabulary
is crucial
Step 1: Aleph Bet in Order
• It is important but not necessary to learn the name of the letters.
• Include the final letters in the aleph bet
• Make sure to vocalize all letters to end with the “ih” sound• E.g. The sound of the letters ל = “lih”, ה=
“hih”

Step 2: Aleph Bet Out of Order
• Students must master the sounds of each letter out of order
• This step is often more difficult and requires more time and effort to keep students motivated
• Do not move students up before they have mastered every letter
Aleph Bet Out of Order
צ מ נ ה ס זח ל ך ף ץ תק ש ד ג כ עם ן ו ט א רט ג כ ע י פפ ח ע ג ה ב
Step 3: Vowels
• Introduce the sounds of the vowels• Introducing each vowel with a story
makes it easier for students to remember the sounds
• Teach students hints about vowels• E.g. All vowels that contain lines make the
“ah” sound

Step 4: Letters and Vowels
• Once students have mastered the sounds of letters and vowels they are ready to put them together.
• Three step process: • Say the sound of the letter • Say the sound of the vowel • Say the sound of the letter and vowel
together• In the beginning it is crucial for
students to say all three steps out loud

Step 5: Letter Vowel and Letter
• Five step process:• First three steps as described in Step 4• Add the sound of a second letter• Say the word as a whole
• Again, it is essential that the students say all steps out loud

Step 6: Silent Letters
• When the letters , י, ו have no vowels אand are found in the middle of a word they are are silent
• When the letters , ע, ה have no vowels אand are found at the end they are silent
• A proven strategy to teach these rules is to have students highlight on a page all the silent letters
Practice: Silent Letters
ד, אר יש ה, ינ אוםאהו, המט, עיש
A recommended instructional strategy is to copy a Hebrew text page and instruct students to highlight silent letters.

Step 7: Rules of the “Shva”
• The Shva is vowel that sometimes makes the “ih” sound and sometimes makes no sound at all
• When it falls under the first letter it always makes a sound therefore we say it is awake• , פיעקב, ב באותצעלתו
• When it falls under a letter under in the middle of a word most of the time it makes no sound therefore we say it is asleep• מ, תה אזר מורז
• A Shva at the end of a word never makes a sound
Step 8: Breaking up Words into Syllables• Syllables consist of a letter and a
vowel• Letters with no vowels must connect
to the previous vowel• A silent “Shva” is not considered a
vowel when breaking up words into syllables
• Silent letters and letters at the end a word are the only letters to be found without vowels
/לו/מ/ךשם י/ח/י לנו /ב/יכ/שה
Step 9: Exceptions
• Exceptions to rules when:• Sometimes a shva in the middle of a word
is awake• Vowel and letter combinations that make
non standard sounds
Practice
• When all steps have been mastered in order to increase rate of reading practice sheets must be provided
• Transliterated sheets can helpful for self evaluation
• Recommended to read with a partner to prevent mistakes

Mastery
• The success of this program is based on mastering each step
• Each step must be tested for mastery before moving on
• When a student can read three pages without making a mistake, mastery has been achieved
• However tempting, do not move students up steps before mastery
