John Newlands wrote the Law of Octaves, he ordered the elements in increasing relative atomic mass.

Newlands proposed that the 8th element was a repetition of (had similar properties to) the first.

His work was rejected by other scientists because:• He assumed all elements had been discovered• No gaps were left for undiscovered elements• He grouped some elements together which were

not alike• He found it necessary to place 2 elements in the

same position
