I en- couarge you to share this infomation with all of your friends and families. Remember to read a book as you go along. If you have time, bring in outdoor or garden furniture. You should also move important things to a second story. Stay away from flood water. It may be contaminated (contain dangerous substances). Do not walk through moving water. It can knock you off your feet. If you must walk through water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to test the ground in front of you. Stay away from power lines that are on the ground. You could be electrocuted. Always keep your battery-powered radio with you so you know what is happening. If you are scared, share your fears with an adult. Floods can be scary, but remember -- the water ALWAYS goes away! It was a very hot day. The sun shone down strongly. Ben, Jeff and Linda sheltered under a shady tree. “Sitting under a tree like this protects us from the heat of the sun,” said Ben. Before them lay the wide sea. By the seaside, there were people having picnics. Some people were bathing in the sea. Some were chasing each other on the beach. Ben, Jeff and Linda played by the seaside too. The weather is not always so fine. Sometimes, the sky is cloudy. That afternoon, as soon as the three friends reached home the sky suddenly became overcast. Ben, Jeff and Linda did not go outdoors. They were afraid that it would rain. That afternoon, a storm struck a village. It was reported that many houses were destroyed. Trees were uprooted. The The Flood Helping Flood Victims inhabitants ran out of their houses. They found shelter in a safe place. Linda’s father works in town. Linda telephoned Ben. She told him that it was raining very heavily in town. Lightning flashed repeatedly. Linda’s father was trapped by the rain. Traffic could not move smoothly because of the storm. The heavy rain resulted in floods at the edges of the town. Many inhabitants had to leave their homes. Rescue boats were used. The boats ferried the flood victims to a safe place. The flood victims were housed at a few flood centres. Ben, Jeff and Linda went to help. They prepared food. Help poured in from many sources. Some gave clothes, blankets and food stuff. At long last, the rain stopped. The sun shone again. The floodwaters went down. The flood victims were able to return to their homes, where they had to work hard to clean up the mud and the rubbish that the flood had brought. Remember it only takes a few minutes for rising water to become a flood. Are you Ready? See you next week right here In Your Own Korner.
