InvestingDean Jarrett HEF President

What motivated you to support HEF?As a graduate of a public school system, I feel that I owe much of who I am today to the friendships, diversity and wide range of experiences you can only build through public education. I strongly feel that educating our children is one of the most noble things a society can do, so it was an easy decision to be a part of HEF.

What does the word “Invest” mean to you?I don’t think “invest” applies anywhere more appropriately than to our students. When we empower our young people, we’re investing in the future of our city, our state, and our nation. You never know when a small investment, such as helping a student overcome an obstacle or giving teachers an extra tool in the classroom, will have a long-term impact.

What is a HEF investment you’re particularly proud of?One example of what a big impact a small investment can make is Project iRead. Started by a Henrico teacher, iRead helps struggling students learn how to read by allowing them to listen to audio recordings as they scan the printed words. Our investment was tiny—HEF funded a few iPods—but the impact was enormous: the program was such a success that iRead is now used throughout the district.

How does HEF support students outside the classroom? We want to help build well-rounded students both within and outside school walls. One way we do this is through our “Go for the Goal” mentorship program, which gives underprivileged students the chance to learn about subjects not taught in school, such as etiquette and dressing professionally. The program gets the parents involved as well, which of course is one of the key factors contributing to a student’s long-term success.

What were some big accomplishments from this past year? This has been a huge year for HEF. Not only did we successfully meet our year one goal toward

becoming fi nancially independent from the Henrico Public Schools, but we almost doubled our impact on local students and teachers in the process. We also held our inaugural

Corporate Spelling Bee (see page 10) in March, which was hugely successful—particu-larly for my team from The Martin Agency, who brought home the winners’ trophy!

What are your plans for HEF in 2013?My biggest goal for 2013 is simply around awareness: the more awareness we gen-erate, then the more money we can raise, and the more money we raise then the more students we can help. We’ve got great support from the community and the Henrico School System, and lots of volunteer opportunities—even as easy as donat-ing school supplies. By doing the extra things that sometimes public funding can’t do, we’re truly changing these students’ lives forever and providing a more enriched

education experience for all the students in Henrico County.

This fall, Joe Koontz will assume the role of principal at Donahoe Elementary School—a well-deserved title for a fi gure who has become an academic leader throughout Henrico County Public Schools.

However, Koontz’s work is nowhere near fi nished: the father of two-year-old twins, with another baby on the way, Koontz bal-ances work, fatherhood, and school, currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership.

HEF recently awarded Koontz the 2011 Edwards Scholar-ship to help him achieve his academic goals.

Koontz expressed his gratitude, explaining, “With the current economy and price of secondary education going up, HEF has re-ally enabled me to keep going.”

The recipient of two HEF grants at different schools, Koontz has witnessed fi rst-hand the power of investing in education.

“The main thing HEF has done is allow teachers to implement things they are passionate about,” Koontz said. “When a teacher is passionate about something, then the kids are as well.”

He added, “The more we can give an au-

thentic learning experience, where students see a connection be-tween real life and school, the better.”

“The main thing HEF has done is allow teachers

to implement things they are passionate about...”

INVESTING in instruction

HENRICO EDUCATION FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

2012

Each year, HEF carefully considers numerous of grant requests, and invests in the most creative, forward-thinking projects that can help inspire instruction in Henrico classrooms.

This year, HEF funded $43,829 for innovative grants, impacting more than 49,056 students. Below are some key investments from 2011 - 2012:

• Financially supported the Henrico 21 competition, showcas-ing technology’s impact in 21st century teaching and learning

• Coordinated more than 700 career interviews for students at 6 high schools as part of the Mock Interview Program

• Joined with with Rivers Edge ES PTA to hold a Math Enrichment Night for parents and students

• Allowed students from four Title I schools to attend the Zula Patrol weather exhibit through partnering with the Children’s Museum of Richmond

• Provided free leadership training for Go for the Goal middle and high school students through collaborating with Catch Your Limit Consulting

• Sponsored the Virginia Trekkers team, and supported creation of original videos to reinforce Standards of Learning content statewide

• Funded a Math Challenge competition for Lakeside, Harvie, and Ratcliffe elementary students

• Completed a third year of funding for Novel Study at Fairfi eld MS, with an emphasis on community service

• Funded Eyes on Instruction at nine schools for 54 teachers to explore best practices in instruction. Outcomes refl ected a 94% positive impact

HEF continues to expand community collaborations across the county to provide resources and opportunities for Henrico students.

Rondell Tucker wakes up every morning and says to himself “Make footprints worth following.”

He has excelled at Highland Springs High School not only on the academic front,

but was also the SCA President and founded the “Raging Springers,” a group of students who attend sport-ing events, take part in service activi-ties, and raise awareness on mul-tiple subjects throughout Highland Springs. According to Tucker, he has

never felt more at home than at school. He hopes to be a high school principal,

and perhaps even the superintendent of a school district, so that he can inspire stu-

dents the way the faculty at Highland Springs inspired him.

Dina Ayad and her family im-migrated to the United States in 2005. No one in the family spoke English. During the subsequent years Dina’s hard work has enabled her to excel in an engineering based program at the High Tech Academy at Highland Springs HighSchool, a collabora-tive effort between HCPS and VCU. This is an extremely demanding program and Dina is excelling in her studies there as well as her other academics at Free-man High School. She volunteers at Our Lady of Hope Nursing Home and has an impressive record of volunteer activities both in scholastic extra-curricular activities and in her person-al time. Dina’s career goal is to become a police offi cer and she dreams of being a detective, all part of her plan to serve others.

“Make footprints worth following.”

Though 13 may be an unlucky number for some, the thirteenth annual HEF Golf Tournament turned out to be the luckiest event yet. Participants fl ocked in droves to golf under cloudless blue skies on Oct. 17, with 31 teams raising more than $52,000 in funds for Henrico schools. Four new corporate sponsors came out to play as well. HEF executive director Susan Stanley sent special thanks out to tournament sponsor Moseley Architects, and co-sponsors Strawbridge Studios and VALIC. “This year was one of the best,” Stanley said. “There were more HEF volunteers than ever, and it was a beautiful day to enjoy a game of golf—what more could you ask for?”

“Tee Off for Education” Golf Tournament

Corporate Spelling Bee

“S-U-C-C-E-S-S” was the word of the night for HEF’s fi rst annual Corporate Spelling Bee, sponsored by Coventry Healthcare.

Over the course of the evening, 12 teams battled it out for word domination at the University of Richmond, raising

almost $18,000 for HEF in the process.

The competition was fi erce: Team “Strategy Café” re-cruited local librarians to help spell, and The Martin Agency held an internal spell-off to create their super team—a strategy that ultimately won them the fi rst-place trophy.

“The enthusiasm for the inaugural Corporate Spelling Bee went beyond expectations,” said HEF Executive Direc-

tor Susan Stanley. “We look forward to hosting this event for years to come!”
