Thoughts and Wonderings

on God’s Word

Welcome to the world of thoughts and wonderings on

God’s Word! There usually is a scripture passage and a

reflection! It is simple, easy and free. This is a place of

grace for all of God’s children to think like a child. On this

page we are all invited to join the conversation. I will give

my thoughts or wonderings for you to read and then you are

invited to chime in in response. Some days it will be me out

there all alone writing my thoughts with no response from

you. That is perfectly fine! But if you have something you

would like to say on line feel free! I will not use names -- to

protect the innocent ☺.

4 Welcome to the living Stone, the source of life. The

workmen took one look and threw it out; God set it in the

place of honor. 5 Present yourselves as building stones for

the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which

you'll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up

to God. 6 The Scriptures provide precedent: Look! I'm

setting a stone in Zion, a cornerstone in the place of honor.

Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation will never have

cause to regret it. 7 To you who trust him, he's a Stone to be

proud of, but to those who refuse to trust him, The stone the

workmen threw out is now the chief foundation stone. 8 For

the untrusting it's . . . a stone to trip over, a boulder

blocking the way. They trip and fall because they refuse to

obey, just as predicted. 9 But you are the ones chosen by

God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to

be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and

speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day

difference he made for you - 10 from nothing to something,

from rejected to accepted. ( 1 Peter 2:4-10 The Message)

It would seem clear -- at least in this reading from

I Peter -- that we are indeed called to be positive and strong

building blocks -- ‘stones’ -- for the foundation of God’s

grace, love, mercy and forgiveness in this world that is

shaking on its foundation. As I said the other day, it is kind

of scary to think of ourselves as ‘priests’! But if we think of

ourselves as ‘building stones’, it might seem a little

easier. We are here to construct -- or rather to be used to

construct -- a place of grace! A place of acceptance! A

place of safety for the truth of God to be and to grow and to

prosper in the midst of the confusion and traffic of this

human existence.

I will suggest that we who know to hold on to Jesus

Christ -- however big or small our faith --is not made of a

gravel mixture that crumbles when stepped on. We are

made of the strong stuff of real lives. We are made from

stuff of the Spirit’s power to resist the stress of tearing,

pulling and pushing. And for that it would be good to thank

God for making us of ‘the stuff’ that is solid and

enduring! God ‘stuff’!! And, able to live fully by his

power.

‘Whoever trusts in this stone as a foundation

will never have cause to regret it’.

God help us to be good building stuff! pm

During my first President’s Report for the Herald, I wrote this:

“For those of you who know me on a personal level, you know that I am uncoordinated, not athletic, and don’t really like sports. That being said, I love the idea of Imua. Imua is Hawaiian for “go forward.” It is said before all Hawaiian sporting events as a charge to the athletes to not let anything stand in their way - to go forward in their event. This is exactly what Redeemer is doing and needs to do.” After Discernment Sunday, the Every Voice Matters team had a “debriefing” meeting. We agreed on being excited and energized to move forward with the goals selected by the congregation. However, I also voiced a hint of disappointment that I felt. Throughout Discernment Sunday, I kept hearing negativity and people not wanting to move forward. This is a problem. Before selecting our goals, we had no direction at Redeemer and we complained. A lot. Now we have some direction and I’m still hearing complaining. The bottom line is this: We care about every person in this congregation (every voice matters, remember?), and every member has been given multiple opportunities to share their opinions and ideas. It is no longer time to complain. It is no longer time to shoot down every idea and continue the negativity. Redeemer will move forward. Redeemer must move forward. Nothing will stand in our way because God is our way. Please study our goals. Pray over our goals. Share your passions. Support each other.

Imua.

Thank you! Jenny Nettesheim President of the Congregation

Finance Team Meeting Notes

June 9, 2015

The team looked at current expenses and discussed

ideas as to how we could bridge the gap between

income/expenses. The team wondered if the Bequest

Team could address the deficit when considering best

use of the funds. The potential of having the RLC

Foundation accept part of the funds in order to make at

least a portion of the gift a perpetual ongoing benefit to

the church also was raised.

The church will EFT $100.00 a month to the

Foundation to repay the loan for the office copier until

paid in full, in 39 months.

The team decided to put the Mortgage Reduction

Plan on hold for the moment. The member who offered

the matching funds has generously donated the money

to the church already as regular giving. With the

current financial status the team felt we would hold off

on the request for additional mortgage funds.

The potential use, or possible sale of parsonage

property was discussed by the team. The team would

like to take more time to address issue with other

concerned ministry teams before coming to final

decision.

Don Horen has been cost comparing insurance

companies. He found one which is well rated and

$2,000 cheaper than our current carrier. The team felt

the property committee can follow through on this.

Every Voice Matters Meeting Recap

As promised here is a recap of last Sunday's, May 31st meeting following worship.

We had fifty-seven Redeemer members in attendance that listened, participated and asked a lot of questions. All in all, it was a

very good exchange between the Every Voice Matters Team and the members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. We reviewed our

past events from the October 5th Historical Reflections meeting, the Fire Side Chats and the Redeemer Norms Review. We dis-

cussed the Goals that were developed and how they were important to us. Then we made our choices.

Below is the Goal sheet that you were asked to indicate what your first, second and third choices were by category. We said that

as a Body of Christ we will pursue the accomplishment of the top six goals, those goals are in bold print with the numerical rank-

ing on the left followed by the vote counts.

GOALS

Rank Points A. Strengths to Build On:

42 1. Build on our welcoming, open and friendly atmosphere by enhancing the Worship experience of All

People at Redeemer.

71 2. Grow our Outreach Ministry through continued Community Service and Partnerships.

6 101 3. Worship is a priority and we will seek to make it relevant to All People.

72 4. Our Young People are Loved and Valued. We will make youth programing a

Priority.

16 5. Build on the success of current Pastoral support programs that nurture our Spiritual Leader.

B. What’s Broken and Needs Fixing:

90 1. Create a team to better understand and improve communication between All.

75 2. Our Financial Perspective needs to fall in line with our Core Values of Spirituality, Love, All People

and Service.

4 105 3. A Broad Spectrum of Activities for All Ages is lacking. We need to encourage All Members in the

Life of the Congregation. 52 4. Redirect our energies to Celebrate Our Successes versus focus on Perceived Failures. (Lets Love Our-

selves)

C. Social Ministry:

5 104 1. Support Existing Service Agencies in the Community that Help Families in Need.

1 123 2. Social Involvement / Networking with our Community Consistent with our

Core Values: Love, All People, Spirituality and Service. 95 3. Establish Redeemer as a Place of Sanctuary for All People who Need Help.

D. Long Term Aspirations:

2 119 1. Develop Worship & Program Opportunities to Attract those who have No Spiritual Home.

3 118 2. Create Teams to Support Spiritual Growth in Youth and Music Ministry.

86 3. We continuously evaluate Worship Opportunities to adjust to the ever

changing Spiritual Needs of our Community.

These top six goals were then approved by the Redeemer members present and the Redeemer Council approved the congrega-

tion’s recommendations.

These top six goals and the implementation will now become the responsibility of the church council to develop action points,

responsible ministry teams and deadlines. Look for periodic updates and please reply positively when asked to work on one or

more of these goals.
