in love with latex....haili hughes investigatesLatex. Along with “dildo” or “whips” it just wasn’t a word that was mentioned in polite circles. Resigned to fetish circles, it certainly wasn’t a material that any respected vintage girl would wear. But in recent years, all of that has changed and rubber is squeaking out of the closet.

9.

When I came into alternative modelling, latex was an avenue which I was definitely not interested in pursuing. My day job is as a teacher in a Secondary School and wearing something that revealing and sexualised did not seem at all appropriate to me. Until recently, my only experience of latex had been in Bizarre magazine. Until my first Alt and Burlesque Festival a couple of years ago…As I tottered through the packed aisles in the cellar, in my rockabilly dress and petticoat, I felt like Martha Stewart must have on her first day in jail…far too prim and proper for my surroundings. Until a stall stopped me in my tracks. Racks upon racks of stunning pastel coloured creations, in classic cuts with kitsch laser work of unicorns and ice creams and general cuteness surrounded me. What’s more they were made out of that scary material; latex. Gingerly I made my way over and looked at the goods…could latex be cute and dare I say it classy?

I re-evaluated my opinions and tried to open my mind. After trawling the internet for latex designers I was surprised to see that it was not just all pasties and panties. There were dresses; beautiful dresses in a cacophony of colours and pin-up styles and what’s more they were being worn by ladies of all shapes and sizes! So when I saw a casting call for a catwalk in Nottingham wearing items by Lady Allura’s latex I decided to take the plunge and apply. I was delighted to be accepted but was still nervous about how latex could merge with my vintage style.

The fantastic thing about latex is that so many designers are diversifying to encompass a wide spectrum of styles. It seems the images I had of harness-es and gimp masks, were a little bit antiquated! While many designers still cater to this crowd, some of the high fashion pieces that designers are produc-ing are breath-taking. One of these designers is the well-respected Fetasia. Renowned for their bespoke creations and wide range of ready to wear pieces, designer Alethea thinks celebrity endorsement has raised the profile of latex.

“I think it hasn’t become a mainstream material as such, but due to celebs like Lady Gaga and Paloma Faith it has become more popular.” But she believes that latex is not just a celebrity fad. “The material itself also has flexibility and strength which lends itself to fluid designs. I love latex for my evening gown designs because they hang nic-er and cling in the right places and the colours available are stunning.”

It seems that latex is increasingly becoming a material of choice for vintage vixens worldwide, with many traditional pin-up magazines dedicating whole issues to this rubber love. Even famous pin up girl Bernie Dexter herself has posed in some beautiful latex outfits. While I am not a fully converted latex lover, since my initial hesitation I have done a wide variety of shoots in rockabilly inspired designs and have several planned in the next few months. Latex is certainly more than just a kinky fetish mainstay…without a hint of sarcasm I can honestly say that it can smooth out bumps, can be classy and makes me feel damn sexy – not slutty. Fact.
