Stage 4 students have remained focussed throughout the beginning of Term 2 and are now gearing up
for the end of Semester One, when they will receive their first School Report for the year. This is a time
that they should focus on completing all assessment tasks, revising for any examinations they may be
having and utilising the resources of Kanahooka High School such as the After School Tutorial Centre in
the Library to obtain extra assistance and guidance. The After School Tutorial Centre operates every
Tuesday and Wednesday from 2.30 to 3.30pm where teachers work individually or in small groups to
assist students in any way possible for them to achieve the best results possible.
Teachers will also be in the process of completing marking and writing student reports for Semester One.
Part of this process will also include an overview of the entire year group’s academic performance, which
will lead to reviewing class placements and perhaps some movements of students between classes for
the commencement of Semester Two.
Some of our Year 8 students have demonstrated positive progress as influential students of Stage 4.
This year for the first time, we have Year 8 as Peer Support Leaders and Elise S, Alexander S and
Tyrell S have volunteered to pilot a peer mentor program. This will see them take selected Year 7
students under their wings and become a positive influence in their school lives. These students are
positive role models and are fine examples of future student leaders.
Another part of my role as Deputy Principal is to lead the review of Kanahooka High School’s Policies
and Procedures. This has led to recent reviews of Assessment Procedures and also the Kanahooka High
School Anti-Bullying Policy, which is nearing completion. Shortly all staff and students will be stepped
through the up to date policy, which will also be publicised to parents and caregivers through our
newsletter and website, detailing how Kanahooka High School will not accept bullying in any way. A
brochure detailing the steps of reporting incidents will be distributed, and staff will be taken through the
steps they must take in addressing any reports of bullying made to them. We want all students to be
happy, positive learners and we will not accept bullying in any shape or form.
As Deputy of Stage 4, it is an honour to work with our students and you, their parent/caregivers. It is a job
I love and I feel it is a privilege to work with your children every day. We have a great team in Stage
Advisers, Ms Dedini and Mr Howley and we are only too pleased to assist you in any way possible.

Congratulations Peter on securing a School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) at Reece Plumbing. Peter showed lots of enthusiasm and maturity in chasing up this opportunity. He will complete his HSC, whilst working one and a half days per week at Reece Plumbing, combined with studies in Transport and Distribution.
Well done and good luck! Ms A Phelan Careers Adviser
Once again the SASS staff at KHS are holding a Biggest Morning Tea and raffle to raise money for the Cancer Council. Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 and are available at the front office. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday 25 May at the morning tea.
Once again our sister school students from Japan will be coming to stay with us in 2016. They arrive 29 July and leave 8 August.
We are now calling for expressions of interest by our Kanahooka High School families, to host one of these students. It is a fun and life changing experience and you don’t need to speak Japanese to do it. All you need is a bed and separate room – you can sleep on the lounge whilst they’re here, or bunk with your sibling! You can create room at your place to host a student. See Mrs Shoebridge or Mrs Ursino for an expression of interest form. Mrs A Shoebridge

NEWS FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY
At the end of Term 1, 8S participated in a lesson in the CLOWD room. The class were in teams and had to complete an equation relay. The aim of this lesson was to reinforce some skills in solving equations with pronumerals on both sides. The setting out that was produced on the whiteboards was excellent and the class had fun as well. Both my Year 8 and 9 classes have been accessing the school’s Moodle site to complete all their
homework tasks. This site allows the students to complete quizzes and all class work has been placed
on there as well. Students can access this site at home and they just use their school login and password.
My Year 11 Mathematics and Extension 1 Mathematics classes are busy preparing for the first practice at
formal examinations being held in Week 6 this term. They have been given a mapping grid for the exam
outlining the questions and the aim of this is to try and guide the students with their studies.
Mrs A Hood
Year 9 Information and Software Technology have been busy practising their programming skills. This term
they have been learning to create simple web pages by using HTML tags. The students have been getting
creative using different pictures, colours and text and how pages can link together. We have also been
looking at project management skills and how we can use these to effectively work on projects. These skills
will be handy when the students start creating their website major project.
Mr A Walton
Our Year 12 HSC Mathematics class have made great use of our new CLOWD (Collaborative Learners, Occupants Working Dynamically) room this year. Room 709 now has nine wall-to-wall whiteboards for students to engage with during their lessons. Students photographed below, Izabella V, Shaina-Lea J and David H are working together to solve some pretty amazing integral calculus! If you look closely, you can see Mackenzie H hiding from the camera Well done Year 12! Mrs K Sammut
Year 12 is working hard on their Renting and Property Purchasing Assignment. Tackling one of life’s biggest financial events, Year 12 is researching rental agreements, bonds, weekly payments and other expenses related to moving out. As a major assignment this will be presented either as printed document or a slideshow to share with their classmates. Mr D Ursino
Year 11 General Mathematics students have completed their first assessment task on Mathematics and Communication. The General Mathematics course has a number of Focus Study units. The first unit on Mathematics and Communication recognises the importance of popular forms of communication in society. The unit provided students with the opportunity to use their knowledge, skills and understanding in practical communication contexts involving mobile phones, digital download/upload, and file storage. Students are now busy preparing for their second assessment task. This will be held in the Week 6 examination period. Mrs L Bennett

HOSPITALITY VET - CAREERS EXPO CATERING Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students participated over 2 days in the
Careers Expo Catering. Day 1 was the busiest with students catering for
50 VIP Principals in the function room and over 350 Careers Expo
Representatives. The students washed and dried crockery, glasses and
cutlery for the function. The Year 12 students set the tables as taught in
the Serve Food and Beverage Unit in Hospitality. It was all hands on deck
when the food arrived. The students in a very short amount of time placed
the food on the tables provided. During service, the students were very
professional in their manner and were happy to advise and help the
representatives with dietary needs and requests. At the end of the shift,
the students washed, dried and packed everything away in the correct
place.
Day 2 was a bit quieter and the students had the opportunity to make mini
chicken schnitzel burgers before service. Again the students were very
professional in their manner in serving the representatives on the day.
The students are required to complete twelve service periods over two years whilst studying Hospitality.
The majority of this competency is completed in the Mandatory Work Placement. However, this
experience of catering for the Careers Expo will go towards one service period.
I would like to thank Ms Phelan for allowing the students to experience this catering event and to my
Hospitality students for stepping up and taking on the challenge and being professional at all times.

YEAR 11 HOSPITALITY Year 11 Hospitality classes continue to grow in strength in the practical unit: ‘Use Food Preparation
Equipment’. Over the term, the students are honing in on their precision cuts and making food items to
industry standard.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY Year 12 Hospitality classes are busy working through the competencies in this course. The students have just completed the competency; ‘Serve Food and Beverages’. The students performed simulation role plays in class: setting tables, napkin folds, greeting guests and food and drink service. Some pictures below of student’s work:
To students studying Hospitality: It is important to complete all the assessment tasks both practical and theory to be deemed competent.
Students need to have a study plan in place for examination revision and catch up work at home. They
need to be wearing the correct PPE in practical lessons and especially on work placement. If you have any
concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
