LOLA ATKINSON

MANAGING HER WAY TO A BETTER FUTURE

Thanks to the College, I have been able to create and launch my own

company... I now have the business bug

I nvesting some of her limited time into part-time study has paid dividends for former student Lola Atkinson as she

launches multiple businesses following the completion of the CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership & Management. We had a catch up with Lola to find out how her life has changed since she left.

“Over the years I have always enjoyed studying whilst continuing to work and bring up my daughter and this course was chosen to enhance my professional management career. From beginning the course, my ultimate aim was to achieve Chartered Manager Status.”

Lola found that she was able to use the skills that she learned throughout the course to develop a strategy, business plan and business model for her own business which was successfully launched towards the end of the course.

She added, “I love learning and I'm always looking to improve and develop professionally, and my future plans include achieving a full MBA. However for the next year with the launch of my business I plan to take a year out from advanced study so that I can concentrate on developing and growing the company.”

One of the other benefits of studying was working alongside like-minded people. Lola found this to be a motivational factor, helping each other to achieve.

“I really enjoyed meeting other mature students, especially those who were in the same position as me, working full time and bringing up children while studying at this level. We all tried to keep each

other motivated and supported each other throughout the course. At times it was difficult trying to juggle everything, especially committing to the number of hours research needed for each assignment but with dedication, focus, hard work and commitment anything is possible and you only get out what you put in. I've made some great friends on the course and I know we will stay in touch for many years to come.”

“Thanks to the college I have been able to create and launch my own company which I probably wouldn't have done had I not completed this course. I have advanced business and management skills and I'm able to research topics more thoroughly as well as presenting my work in a far more superior and professional standard. The tutors have been superb, all experts in their own fields, with the necessary practical experience to be able to help students apply theory to real life situations.”

Since completing the course Lola has developed and launched two businesses. One business was created following the marketing module when during this time she developed her marketing plan and the second businesses, which focuses on valeting and cleaning, now employs three members of staff with expected plans to grow even further in the very near future. So keep an eye out for Goddess SOS Beauty & Lifestyle Lounge and Goddess SOS Cleaning Services, and perhaps more new initiatives from our very own Goddess of the business world.

ROBBIE CLARKSON

FORMER STUDENT SET TO WORK WITH FUTURE SOCCER STARS

From the day I started, the staff at the college were incredibly

supportive and welcoming

S occer and statistics are the new focus for a former Sunderland College student who has landed

a job with Premier League Champions Manchester City. Robbie Clarkson, 26, has now started work as Manchester City’s lead performance analyst of the club’s Under 12 to Under 14 academy teams.

The role will see him scrutinise games and then feedback to the players on ways they can improve their performance. Robbie, who previously worked as a part-time lecturer at Sunderland College, says getting the job is a dream come true.

Robbie said: “I was over the moon when I got the call telling me I had got the job. To be working for such a huge football club is fantastic and I think I’m very fortunate. I’ve been involved in football all my life, firstly as a player at Middlesbrough and Sunderland AFC and then as a student at Sunderland College and then later on as a coach and lecturer.”

“I’ll be sad to leave the area. I’m originally from Redcar so turned up at the college in 2005 not knowing anyone and have since made some great friends.”

Robbie had previously been signed as a youth player to Sunderland AFC but went to Sunderland College to study for a Foundation Degree in Sports and Exercise Development when it looked like his professional football career wouldn’t work out. After completing the final part of his degree at Sunderland University he began coaching and training other footballers at Sunderland AFC alongside his role as a part-time lecturer with the college.

John Rushworth, Director and Head of Bede and Headways Sixth Forms, has known Robbie since he first started as a student at the college eight years ago.

John said: “This is fantastic news for Robbie, I’m really pleased for him. He worked incredibly hard during his time at Sunderland College and I’m confident he will be hugely successful in his new role. The youth teams that he will analyse at Manchester City will really benefit from his insight and personality.”

“Robbie’s story is a great example of what students from Sunderland College can go on to achieve. I firmly believe that when students come to us we provide them with all the support they need for them to be the best they can be.”

Robbie’s role will see him analyse the performances of the clubs under 12 and under 14 academy teams. The academy has developed a number of players in recent years including Daniel Sturridge, Micah Richards and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Modestly, Robbie attributes much of his success to the support he has received during his time at Sunderland College, particularly when studying at the College.

Robbie said: “Sunderland College has been great to me. From the day I started, the staff at the college were incredibly supportive and welcoming.”

“My course was excellent. It made learning an easy and straightforward process and it’s where I was first inspired to teach others.”
