In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew generated devastating flooding across central and eastern North Carolina. Kinston received more than 18 inches of rain over two days. This rainfall was compounded by heavy rain upstream from Kinston, resulting in flood levels along the Neuse River that exceeded the previous record set by Hurricane Floyd in 1999 by over two feet. Hundreds of homes in Kinston and surrounding Lenoir County were affected. Many of the areas that experienced the flooding were not zoned as a high flood risk, so many people had no flood insurance. Adult Christian Education

Let it snow! Let it snow! Highland Snow Policy ~ On weekdays Highland follows the closure schedule of Manheim Township School District. If the Manheim Township Schools are closed, all church meetings and activities for that day and evening are cancelled. If the day begins with weather this does not result in closing by the school district but conditions deteriorate during the day, the determination to cancel church evening meetings and activities will be made by 3 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays the determination to close will be made by the church staff by 7 a.m. There are four ways to check for closure information: the homepage of the Highland website (highlandpc.org); the Highland telephone information message, ABC27 TV and website (abc27.com) and WGAL’s website (wgal.com).

Don’t forget the Chancel Flowers! The 2018 flower chart is in the Narthex. We need sponsors for most of the Sundays. Help us out by signing the flower Chart. Just leave your name and phone number, you will be called for a bulletin message. The cost is $20. Thank you for your support!!

Don’t Forget Your Grocery Cards! With your purchases of grocery cards, Market Share has been able to send $1300 to the Food Banks of Puerto Rico and Houston. The donations to these food banks in these devastated areas will help immediately with food and water needs. Thank you, thank you! Please visit the kiosk in the nar-thex every Sunday morning to purchase cards.

Written 450 years ago, with much influ-ence from Martin Luther and the Refor-mation, the Heidelberg Catechism offers answers to questions people were ask-ing then and are still asking today:

Who am I?

What’s wrong with this world?

What’s the purpose of my life?

Why should I follow Jesus?

How can I be close to God? Dr. Rabey is offering a 5-week sermon series through to Feb 11, based on Craig Barnes’ new book Body & Soul: Reclaiming the Heidelberg Catechism. We will take a closer look at this classic expression of faith, one of eleven in our Book of Confes-sions, address the everyday anxieties people face today, and see how these an-swers apply to our lives to help bring us closer to God. Join him for Coffee & Conversation each Sunday to discuss in more details. See the Adult Education listings for details.

Spiritual Growth for Lent

Join us for this unique opportunity to serve God and grow in your Highland

community. Through this inter-generational experience you will join others from

our church for a week of service, fellowship, and worship. This year’s trip will be

from July 15-21, 2018. You will create amazing memories and make life long

friendships. You will grow closer to God as you do His work and love on the people

we serve. This trip has been a life changing experience for many people traveling to

Madison County, one of the most economically depressed areas in the United

States.

Please visit the church office or highlandpc.org/mission/mission-trips/ to down load

a registration form. Payment, registration, and medical forms should be completed

and sent to the office no later than June 24, 2018. Any questions, please contact Jim

Eberle [email protected] or Pastor Noe Juarez at: [email protected].

Please join us for an informational meeting in the Fellowship Hall next Sunday,

Jan. 28 after the 10 a.m. service to learn more about it! We will have pizza and re-

freshments.

Don’t miss this adventure to serve God and show His love as you make homes

warmer, safer, and drier!

During the six weeks of Lent, Highland will begin a new spiritual growth experience entitled “What Makes a Hero? The Death Defying Ministry of Jesus.” Each week small groups of 10-12 people will meet at homes and at the church to explore six ways which Jesus lived his life as what we would call a modern day Hero. Using 10-12 minute videos and small group conversation, you will have the opportunity to discuss current pop culture heroes with how Jesus lived and responded to the following life concerns:

1. Good vs Evil and God Feb 19- 23 2. Right, Wrong and Holy Mar 26- 2 3. Us, Them and the Body of Christ Mar 5 - 9 4. Have, Have Not and the Kingdom of God Mar 12- 16 5. Old, New and Covenant Mar 19- 23 6. Life, Death and Resurrection Mar 26-30

Plan now to be a part of this exciting Lenten journey of faith and fellowship.
