Today, we’re going to

listen to music from the

ballet Rodeo, by Aaron

Copland.

Copland liked the spirit of

the American West. Four

years earlier, Copland

wrote another western

ballet called Billy the Kid.

In Rodeo, a young

cowgirl meets and falls

in love with a cowboy at

a hoedown. Hoedowns

and square dancing were

popular forms of

entertainment during the

early 1900’s.

Aaron Copland composed

music that tried to capture

the fun and excitement of

an old-fashioned hoedown.

He used folksongs from

Ireland and Scotland that

developed into American

fiddle tunes.
