Steven Harris & family of Bodmin with calves topping at a massive £2,000!

Good entry and considering the Qurbani Festival is over the

lamb trade has held steady in line with the National trade.

Overall average of 211.1. Top per kilo on the day was 225p

for a smart pen of 44.4kg £100 from Mr & Mrs ST Tucker

of Hatherleigh followed by 2 vendors at 222p, Peter Hobbs

of Wrasford 44kg £97.50 and Malcolm & Graham Piper

44.4kg £98.50. Still several pens around £100 to a top of

£105 sold by Edward Bellamy of Coxtor, Tavistock followed

by Messrs Stephens of Burnscott who realized £103.

227 STORE LAMBS

More on offer but the trade was still flying. Top of the day was £76 from Craig Saunders of Liskeard.

442 DRAFT EWES & RAMS

Over 440 ewes on offer very much sought after with an overall average of £67.68. The big ewes still saw several

pens over £85 to a top of £97 from Mr Bucknell of Holsworthy, a lot of other pens in the £90’s. Mules topped at

£87.50 from Malcolm Gribble of West Rowden and Hill bred ewes to £69.

237 BREEDING EWES

A shortage of breeding ewes has resulted in a flying trade and a lot more could

have been sold. Top of the day was £165 for a pen of Suffolk x 2T from Paul Berry

of Barnstaple. Texel x 2T from Richard Grigg of Treneglos topped at £145 and

NC mule 2T from J Allin of Hartland realized £143. Flock age ewes realized £115.

*** AUTUMN / WINTER GRASS KEEP ***

We have a number of Sheep farmers looking to secure grass keep for lambs /

hoggs and ewes either short term or long term for Autumn / Winter 2020 / 21.

We also have a client urgently looking for grass keep for approx. 500 well-bred

store lambs. All lambs are drenched and ready to go to grass now!

Another massive day which saw a big number

of buyers present joined by new buyers from

Cornwall and Mid Devon.

Overall top call of the day was £605 given for a smart Angus steer stirk in from Messrs Ovens of Camelford, North

Cornwall. Trade of the day went to The Horton family of Plymouth who saw the best of their run of 30 stirks hit a

massive £555 for 4-5mth Angus stirks going off to their new home in Penzance, West Cornwall. The Horton family

also topped the heifer stirk section with their best trio at £520. A massive entry of baby calves saw Graham & Judith

Quance top the day at £440 for a cracking Limousin bull with Rob Veale of Beaworthy close up at £420 with others

at £410 (x2), £400 & £395 from the same good farm. Geoff Endercott saw his best of 8 hit £412 for a wonderful

Blue bull going off to its new home near Torrington. The best of the baby Angus (26 days) came in from Messrs

Clarke of Winkleigh and reached £185 with Andy Hutton topping the Blonde calves at £150. Herefords saw plenty

of interest with Messrs Collins Partnership of Winscott at £310 going off to the edge of Exmoor. Charolais babies

topped at £370 for Ann Jose & family of Launceston and the best of the Monbeliarde bulls reached £335 on behalf

of the Quance family. In the baby heifer pens both Rob Veal and Messrs Collins Partnership hit £310 with Ian Balsdon

of Hatherleigh selling Charolais heifers to £290, Messrs Jose at £270 and Mike Greenaway of Tetcott at £268. Angus

heifers saw the best at £170 for Messrs Furze and Brian Thomas of South Molton at £130 with plenty £115-£120.

A big entry of Holstein bulls saw 5 active buyers pushing the best to £270 on behalf of Rachel Poole with 6 others

from the same farm between £150-£185. Most of the baby Holsteins (under 42 days) ranged between £45-£100

with very little less than £40.

One consignment of TB restricted calves this week saw the best at £73 with the majority at £54-£56. We continue

to collect TB restricted calves at Holsworthy Market every Monday morning if you have calves for this service,

It is tremendous that we have such good numbers in the calf pens with just shy of 1000 calves over the last 3 weeks.

We are pleased to hear the very positive comments coming from our vendors and will continue to do our very

A huge entry for August saw another good strong trade. A wonderful consignment of 45 well-presented single suckled British Blue and Limousin steers and heifers 12-

24mths saw British Blues rise to £1245 with other Blue heifers at £1185. Younger 16mth British Blue steers saw a

top call of £1105 with other 9-12mth Blue and Limousin from the same farm at £850+. Stronger feeding cattle in

short supply this week with Charolais from Mr T Hervin at £1180 and single suckled Charolais from Mr L Grills of

Hartland at £1160. Native steers again sold well with Herefords to £1030 again from Mr Hervin of Umberleigh with

other 18mth Hereford steers form Mr R Vanstone of Sutcombe selling to £990 for 5 and Aberdeen Angus topping

at £960 for Messrs Hervin again. A much larger entry of younger 15-17mth Holstein x continentals saw a similar

strong trade to last week with both steers and heifers £800+. Another flying trade for those young continentals

8mth British Blues from Messrs Veale of Halwill saw 4 to £710, others from the same farm at £670 whilst 7mth

dairy x Blues from Messrs Pomeroy hit £670 (3) and others at £650 (4). Young dairy x Blue heifers from Messrs

Hopper of Launcells sold to £535 with 9mth Angus from the same farm at £580 and heifers to £525. Several Holstein

steers sold well with Messrs Bowden of Highampton reaching £895 for 3, Messrs James of Halwill sold to £890 with

plenty of younger grazing type £670-£750.

5 COWS & CALVES - A run of 1st calving heifers with Aberdeen Angus May

born calves at foot from Messrs Heard of Pancrasweek saw young cows &

calves to £1280, other Limousins to £1220, A. Angus to £1190. More required.

FINISHED CATTLE – A small entry of non Farm Assured cattle this week

saw a top call of 193.5p £1354 for an Aberdeen Angus steer from Messrs

Petherick of Eastacombe with a British Blue heifer from the same farm at £1138.

OTM WEIGHING COWS - A short entry saw a top call of 138p for a heavy

Aberdeen Angus cow from Mr M Satchell of Week St Mary realizing £1032.

Holstein cows from 105-110p.

GRAZING COWS - Beef cows topped at £790 for 2 Limousins from Messrs Crocker & Bellamy of Tavistock and

Herefords from the same farm to £650. Out of parlour Holsteins from Messrs Turner of Torrington to £570 (2).

An outstanding quality entry provided plenty of choice to our

buyers. Some exceptional top quality animals met a flying

trade topping at £2,500 for ‘Racewood Uno Prudence GP83’,

a freshly calved second calver sold by Steven Harris and family

of Bodmin. George and Shirley Parsons of the Roose herd of

Cornwall topped the heifer section at £2,300 for ‘Roose Muriel 333’ who was yielding an impressive 38 Kgs. This

was closely followed by another pedigree Cornish herd with ‘Whitsand 327 Tamper Candy’, a fresh calved heifer

sold at £2,100 on behalf of Peter Blake and family of Torpoint. George and Shirley Parsons sold another fresh heifer

at £2,050. Alan Parsons and family from Congdon’s Shop saw a consignment from their continuing herd dispersal

top at £2,000 for a freshly calved heifer. Middle of the road type heifers could have been bought sensibly on the

trade and the sale included a wide selection of qualities. Milky type cows had a strong trade throughout the sale,

with third calvers topping at £1,700 on behalf of the Parson family from Congdon’s Shop. Fourth calvers sold to

£1,450 and fifth calvers £1,350. Dry cows were in strong demand with Ivor Barkwill selling a ‘Langaford’ cow, due

with her second, at £1,520.

A super entry of in-calf heifers had an unbelievable trade with three outstanding heifers from Edward Gay of

Riddlecombe topping the section at £1,800 and averaging £1,756. Kevin Waldon saw his in-calf heifers top at £1,580.

Roger Semmens and family from Penzance sold British Friesian type in-calf heifers to £1,600. An outstanding run

of heifers due January and February from Steve and Kat Pomeroy met strong bidding topping at £1,180.

A large entry of commercial bulling heifers saw a very solid and consistent trade topping at £760 on behalf of Peter

Bromell of Buckland Brewer.

Rob and Mike Wade and family from the pedigree ‘Loford’ herd had a consignment of choice heifers which topped

at £2,000 for a three month old ‘Loford Sprite Roxy’ calf with ten generations VG/EX. ‘Loford Lighthouse Lila Z’,

a March born calf, sold at £1,200 with a served heifer ‘Loford Lighthouse Divine’ with six generations of straight EX

breeding selling at £1,600. The Cornish renowned herd of Willsbro also had a strong consignment of yearlings

forward with a strong trade topping at £1,900 for two

heifers ‘Willsbro Country Sara 190’ and ‘Willsbro

Samaritan Lila B’.

A super looking Holstein bull, ‘Racewood Ren’, from

the Renate cow family sold at £1,350 on behalf of

Steven Harris. An outstanding Hereford bull from Mr

& Mrs Robert Anguish from Camborne attracted great

interest and spirited bidding eventually selling at

£2,600.

More freshly calved and close to calving cows and

heifers are required to meet demand. Please give one
