We have an exciting camper update! As of June 27, there are 56 campers already regis-tered for this year’s summer experience. Our optimum registration is 60 campers, and we close registration at 65. Even more exciting … we are welcoming at least 29 campers for the first time and our group includes a record 8 Coolidge Campers! If you know of anyone thinking of joining us, encourage them to reg-ister as soon as possible.

In just a few weeks, a group of 19 youth and adults will be heading to Mingo County, W. Vir-ginia on a Holy Cross mission trip. From July 21—27th, our group will experience the rich-ness and challenges of rural Appalachia while
completing a week of Christ—centered service; “learning to be like Jesus”. We very much need your prayers and additional financial support Contact Pastor Ben with offers to
help.

High School Graduate Recognition
Sunday, August 4th, 10:00 worship
Calling all 2013 graduates! We are planning a recognition and send off as you embark on your
next adventure. Graduates please send us a recent photo and update on your plans for the
Fall. The congregation is invited to come celebrate with us!
Please send your info to [email protected]
The most proper place to begin this month is with gratitude. I am so hum-
bled by the expression of Christian community I have seen in the past few weeks.
It has been a hard time to be church, but through the outpouring of love, prayer
and giving, the strength of this community has spoken quite loudly. Our prayers
continue to be lifted up for the families of all the wonderful people we have lost.
It is out of the hardship of the past few weeks that we begin to see many
new gifts in our community. We see the witness of the men who meet together
and study scripture on Tuesday evenings. We see the beauty of our new outdoor
spaces witness to our amazing, creative God. We see a coffee house offer quiet
comfort to those who grieve. We see the gifts that we always have had, warm meals, warm
hugs ; thoughtful cards continue to show forth God’ s love .
So thank you for being Holy Cross - even in the midst of such hardship.
I think I am not alone in recognizing that even in the midst of hard times there is a
vibrancy that is evident all around us. With so much energy spinning about we naturally ask
the question - Now what?
As you read this - midsummer is upon us. The youth are almost ready to head to
West Virginia - with a bit more fundra is ing and prep time they will be ready to go “ Be Like
Jesus” through a YouthWorks miss ion trip. Hearts, hands and voices is almost upon us as
well. Dozens of children are going to spend a week immersed in music and the arts and
their lives will never be the same afterwards.
As these summer highlights draw to a close we will be looking towards fall. Fall nor-
mally brings with it a return to normalcy in the life of a church. There will be nothing normal
about this fall at Holy Cross. We are in the midst of wonderful and dynamic change brought
about by the Holy Spirit. We will soon be at a place where like Jesus in this week’ s gos-
pel, we will have to set our eyes on Jerusalem, the place where God is calling us to travel.
God is bringing about a new thing in the life of HC if we would have ears to listen.
As more and more people are brought into the life of this community their lives will
naturally be changed by engaging in worship, scripture and discipleship. Are we as a con-
gregation ready to be changed by them? Each new person will bring with them a lifetime of
experience and uniqueness in their spiritual gifts given in their baptism. Are we ready to lis-
ten to their stories, affirm their gifts and honor them with God given hospitality?
I would urge you to find ways to be open to what God is doing in our community and
in your individual life. I firmly believe the best way to be ready for what God is doing is to
take a bold s tep in discipleship and cons ider be ing part of this Fa ll’ s GPS journey. Wheth-
er you have been here 50 minutes or 50 years there is a place for you, your story and your
questions at GPS.
Holy Cross - the Harvest is Plentiful - Workers in the Harvest is what God is seeking.

BLANKETS 4 KIDS
Want to make a no-sew blanket for Wayne County children who have been abused? Over 7,000 abuse and neglect intakes occur in Wayne County every year. These blankets are used instead of the paper sheet during the medical exam. You need a piece of fleece fab-ric 50" X60". Detailed instructions are on the W/ELCA bulletin board. Cindy Swift of Ruth Circle is a volunteer for Child's Hope and can answer any questions you may have. Finished blankets or just the material can be put in Cin-dy's mailbox. Thank you for your help!

Dear Holy Cross Friends, Thank you so much for all the cards and prayers. I really believe it helps. Our pray-ers have been answered - the cancer did not spread. God is truly great! God Bless, Kathy Mertins
hearts, hands and voices Volunteers needed, looking for adult musicians
August 12-15, 2013 at Holy Cross
Even as we are celebrating the camper response so far with 56 young people already planning to join us,
we are gearing up to make the experience everything it should be. We need your help to carry it off! We
are also looking for additional participants in the adult workshop being offered for the first time..
Volunteers needed: Our camp experience relies on an enthusiastic band of volunteers. Please consider
helping us out as you can. Tasks are split into small chunks to make scheduling easier.
Kitchen Brigade: We need a team of folks to help Cindy Channey “man” (person) the Kitchen Bri-
gade. She needs hands for mid-morning snacks and lunch. Contact her at
[email protected] or 734-425-5545.
Registration Table Mon 8/12 8:15 am-9:15 am: A few folks to help us welcome campers that first
morning. Contact Ellen Batkie at 248-497-1451.
Art team: Sue Scherbarth and Joan Onkka anchor our team. They need help for a few hours each day.
Contact Sue at 734-261-6668 or [email protected].
Evening Reception: We need a team to help set-up and donate goodies for the reception following
the evening performance.
Adult Workshop still looking for musicians: This year’s camp experience includes a wonderful
new dimension for choir directors, music educators and interested parents. Michael Burkhardt is
offering a three-session workshop (6:30 to 8:00 p.m. 8/12-8/14) intended to equip these adults to
apply the process he developed for hearts, hands and voices and extend it into their own context.
He will introduce the curriculum materials recently published by MorningStar Music under the
banner “hearts, hands and voices music series” We are looking for additional participants,
and need your help to spread the word!
Funding appeal: Tuition covers approximately half the cost to offer this program. The other half of our
funding comes from individual donations, corporate advertising and grants. Additionally we strive to
have scholarships available for any camper requiring assistance. Please consider funding at least one
$80 scholarship to help us make this possible.
http://heartshandsvoices.org or contact Ellen Batkie (248) 497-1451.
To Our Holy Cross Family, Thank you for the prayers, cards and hugs offered following the loss of my father. Your love and support have been a comfort to our family. We feel blessed to be a part of such a giving, faith community. With deepest gratitude, The Channey and Minard Families
