Holy Family and St. John the Bapst Catholic Parishes October 4, 2020 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Bad Grapes or Good Grapes? Planng a vineyard is planng for a long-term investment and relaonship, a labor that will not yield its grapes, and more importantly its wine, for several years. Just ask our local grape grower Debi Gust-Boerema, who inherited 18 acres from her parents, Red and Peggy Gust, and aends to approximately 1,500 meculously cared for grape vine plants that slope across a hill that once grew alfalfa and corn silage. Isaiah in our first reading compares Gods people to a vineyard that has yielded bad grapes. All that loving labor, the care- fully prepared soil, the sunny hillside well-chosen, the selected vine stock planted, the hedge to keep out the wild deer – and the neighbors goats – the tower and the wine-press. God invested for a long-term relaonship with His people, but they have rendered only sour grapes, violence and oppression. Well then, Isaiah prophesies, God was disappointed with His vineyard. He created and tended it out of his love. He had chosen a people for himself. But they turned their backs on Him and were unfaithful, and so they would pay the price. However, God will save a remnant and they can be rebuilt into a wonderful vineyard. Jesus uses the same imagery in our parable today, but his emphasis is very different. For Jesus the problem lies not with the vineyard but with the tenant-farmers. The vineyard produces its grapes and from them the wine for drinking. However the tenants will not give the land-owner his due. Such share-cropping arrangements, with the landowner and the tenants spling the produce were normal agricultural business pracce in Jesusme. However, when the tenants beat up and kill the masters agents, they dont complain that they cannot afford the rent and buy clothes for their children. This is not a peasant rebellion against an unjust landlord. The tenantsmove is from pure greed, they want the vineyard for themselves. They even kill the owners son and heir. The judgment is pronounced against the tenants, and new tenants will be found to deliver the produce in due season. The parable is not told against the vineyard which symbolizes Gods people, unlike Isaiahs parable. The parable is told against the contemporary religious leaders. It is a call for a fresh leadership of Gods people, a leadership who will allow the vineyard to flourish and render to God the fruit. The key to this new leadership is the son, who in our parable was thrown out of the vineyard and killed. Jesus was killed outside the city, outside the vineyard of the Lord, nong that in Jesusme Jerusalem and parcularly the temple could be idenfied as the vineyard of the Lord. Jesus cast out of the vineyard, is the keystone who holds together the new building, the new temple of God, the vineyard of the Lord. Todays Gospel is a warning for all who work in the kingdom of God; bishops, priests, deacons, Catholic school and CCD teachers, coordinators of religious educaon and others. The vineyard is Gods vineyard, not our vineyard. As such, ministers of the Church should never labor apart from or worse in opposion to God and His teachings. The fruits of a healthy vineyard, are Gods people living the Gospel teachings faithfully. F r . T o m St. John the Bapst and Holy Family Catholic Parishes

Spiritual Communion What happens when we cannot receive Jesus sacramentally? The tradi!on tells us to make a “spiritual communion,” joining our whole selves—prayers, works, joys, and sufferings—to his sacrificial presence in the Eucharist—even when that sacrament is not before us to receive.

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire You with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already in my heart

and unite myself to You completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from You.

Amen.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Why is October the Month of the Holy Rosary of Our Blessed Virgin Mary? Answer: On October 7th, the Church celebrates the feast day of Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary. The feast day was established by Pope Saint Pius V on the anniversary of the victory at Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The naval victory was attributed to the Virgin Mary whose intercession was entreated through the recitation of the Holy Rosary. The Church then proceeded to dedicate the entire month of October to the Holy Rosary so that individuals, families, and communities would pray the Holy Rosary, if possible, on a daily basis for peace in the world. “Not only do we earnestly exhort all Christians to give themselves to the recital of the pious devotion of the Rosary publicly, or privately in their own house and family, and that unceasingly, we also desire that the whole month of October should be consecrated to the Holy Queen of the Rosary” . (Pope Leo XII; On Devotion of the Rosary, September 1, 1883). The rosary will be prayed before every Mass at both

St. John and Holy Family Parishes throughout the month of October.

Sunday Mass & Healing Service St. Ma"hew Catholic Church in Wausau will celebrate Sunday Mass followed by communal and individual prayer for health and healing on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at 3:30 pm. The sacrament of reconcilia!on will be available prior to Mass from 2pm un!l 3:25pm.
