CHRISTMAS 2015

A Christmas Hymn

A stable-lamp is lighted Whose glow shall wake the sky; The stars shall bend their voices,

And every stone shall cry, And straw like gold shall shine;

A barn shall harbor heaven, A stall become a shrine.

This child through David’s city

Shall ride in triumph by; The palm shall strew its branches,

And every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry,

Though heavy, dull, and dumb, And lie within the roadway To pay His Kingdom come.

Yet He shall be forsaken,

And yielded up to die; The sky shall groan and darken,

And every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry, For stony hearts of men;

God’s blood upon the spearhead, God’s love refused again.

But now, as at the ending,

The low is lifted high; The stars shall bend their voices,

And every stone shall cry. And every stone shall cry;

In praises of the child; By whose descent among us,

The worlds are reconciled.

Richard Wilbur, Poet Laureate of the United States 1987-88

Dear Friends, Blessings to you and your family this Christmas season and throughout the New Year to come. May the awesome mystery of the Word made flesh fill your hearts and homes with peace, joy and love. I look forward to serving you in the years to come and thank you for the warm welcome you have given me over the past few weeks. This is a big change in the rhythm of my life and ministry and I count on your prayers and patience as we take that closer walk together with the Lord. Enjoy the holidays and let the grace of the Incarnate Savior make them truly Holy-days to enjoy family, friends and the beauty of the season. I hope you enjoy the poem by Richard Wilbur, Poet Laureate of the Unites States 1987-1988.

In Jesus,

FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS DECEMBER 28th

Celebrated on December 28

th, Matthew 2: 1-18 tells this

story: Herod was “greatly troubled” when astrologers from the East came asking the whereabouts of “the newborn king of the Jews,” whose star they had seen. They were told that the Jewish Scriptures named Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born. Herod cunningly told them to report back to him so that he could also “do him homage.” They found Jesus, offered him their gifts and, warned by an angel, avoided Herod on their way home. Jesus escaped to Egypt. Herod became furious and “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under.” The horror of the massacre and the devastation of the mothers and fathers led Matthew to quote Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children…” (Matthew 2:18).

“THANK YOU” We wish to thank all those who have contributed so generously to our recent requests for donations to those in need. Thank you to those who brought in donations for our various CYO teams, gift cards, as well as cash donations to purchase fresh food for the holidays, gifts for the Giving Tree for the children of the Highbridge Community in the Bronx, gifts for the women and children of the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. Also to those groups who donated food baskets to us for distribution. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to a year filled with wonderful things and the opportunity to continue to share the blessings of our faith with all of you! We appreciate your participation as we continue to sing the beautiful songs of the Christmas season that will be used in the next few weeks during our parish liturgies.

The Junior, Teen, and Adult Choirs of Holy Innocents, as well as all of our parish musicians

wish you a very Happy New Year!

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON For Catholics, December 25

th is only the beginning.

Our celebration continues through other feasts which celebrate the gift of Jesus. The “Twelve Days of Christmas” indicates the way the Church marks time. We have traditionally celebrated feasts for a week afterward – “Octave” – and the twelve days of Christmas continue to the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6

th. The Epiphany, which means

“Manifestation,” celebrates the coming of the Magi. It is a day to share gifts in many cultures and the day we place the Magi in the nativity set.

HELP NEEDED FOR THE GIFT OF LIFE A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, a devote Catholic and active in her parish, needs a kidney from a live donor, which would give her the best chance to live. Unfortunately, the wait to receive a kidney from a deceased donor is approximately 4-7 years. Please consider giving this special gift to a vibrant, wonderful woman. The potential donor must be between 18 and 70 years old, an A or O blood type (must have never had cancer or diabetes). If you know someone who interested in learning more about this process please reach out to [email protected] or 914-941-6495.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those who are kind to their mother and father. Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21 Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s peace reign in their hearts and in their homes. Gospel: Luke 2:41-52 When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus did not return with the company. Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers while amazing them with his understanding and questions. When found by his concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be in the house of his Father. Returning together, Mary kept these things in her heart.

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Family travel is a wonderful thing. How many look for vacations to a warm spot at this time of the year.

Parents appreciate the joy these sites bring to them and their children. The Holy Family whom we honor today traveled too. They fled Herod and went to Egypt. They traveled and presented the child Jesus to Simeon and Anna at the temple. Today, they come on religious pilgrimage to the temple, God’s special dwelling place.

Child lost! The anxious family looked for Jesus themselves. Not being with their fellow travelers they retrace their steps, and where did they find Him? In His Father’s house!

The conversation which follows speaks of relief as the search had ended, but a new search begins. What did He mean?

Imagine the conversation as they went back to Nazareth and the beginning of the hidden life of Jesus. As we all progress steadily in age, wisdom and grace, speak with your family describing how you would have assumed the role of Joseph, Mary and the child Jesus. May we try to grasp what it means to lose and then find Jesus in our own lives. May we celebrate and bless the gift of family life in all its aspects, joys, sorrows,

pain and pleasure. Our family is God’s gift to us, and our gift to one another.

“The parents of Jesus used to go every year to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve they went up for the celebration as was their custom. As they were returning at the end of the feast, the child Jesus remained behind unknown to his parents… His mother meanwhile kept all these things in memory.
