Dear Parishioners of Holy Innocents, My sincere thanks for your warm welcome at Holy Innocents. I look forward to being with you in the parish and serving you as pastor. The year was 2005 and I was busy studying (and fishing) in Buffalo, NY when the Lord spoke to me the words he said to St. Peter in our Gospel this Sunday: "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." I, like St. Peter, didn't see this invitation coming at all. To be honest, I didn’t really have the humility that St. Peter had when he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” My reluctance came from the fact that I was scared of public speaking and didn’t want to make a fool of myself in front of people. What am I going to say to people!? But the Lord was insistent and so I, following in the footsteps of Saints Peter, James, John, and countless other men and women throughout history whom he has called, left everything and followed him. I found early on that God does have a sense of humor. He led me to the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) and told me that if I am going to make a fool of myself, so be it, since I will be not just anyone’s fool, but God’s fool. As a young man in Indonesia, I had a career traced out in the business world. Never in a million years would I have guessed that one day I would be your pastor in Pleasantville, NY. Indeed, my life as a Dominican priest has brought me to many places and many wonderful people. From the big cities of Washington DC and New York City, the mission in Kenya, to the rust belt of Youngstown, Ohio I have met and ministered to so many whom I have come to treasure in my life. In my vow of poverty I found detachment from earthly things, in chastity I found the heart to love everyone, but most importantly it is in obedience to God’s will, following where he wants me to go, that I have found abundant blessings for me and for those I have met. Being a pastor of a parish is a great responsibility that I do not take lightly, but the most important role of a pastor is the same as of any priest’s: to bring himself and his people to heaven. God always provides, but at the same time I will be accountable to him for this task. From time to time I hope you will remind me of this responsibility. Each one of us has a potential to be a saint. Let us not waste our time because life is short. I look forward to our time together growing in love for God and neighbor. I leave you with the words of St. Paul: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Phi 4:8) Yours sincerely in Jesus Christ, Fr. Bernard M. Timothy, OP

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 10, 2019

First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8 Isaiah recounts the awe he felt the first time be saw the Lord, who was surrounded by angels. He began to feel despair because he was a man of unclean lips, until an angel touched an ember to his lips and pronounced them clean. The Lord asked who he should send forth, to which Isaiah replied, “Here I am, send me!” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 Paul reminds the Corinthians that Christ died for us to free us from our sins. He encourages them to remember the im-portance of Jesus’ death and resurrection. He admits that he initially failed to believe, and therefore was very grateful to be called an apostle and preach in the name of Christ. Gospel: Luke 5:1-11 Luke tells of Jesus preaching to a crowd, then joining Peter who was about to end a fruitless day of fishing. He told Pe-ter to lower his net back in, and a great number of fish were caught. Upon seeing this, Peter and his companions, James and John, immediately abandoned their nets to follow Jesus.

Dear Parishioners; You can’t imagine how thrilled I am about coming “home” to Pleasantville. Holy Innocents and Our Lady of Pompeii were the cradles of my Faith, while I must say that I think that my earliest experience of Faith came from my parents and especially my mother, Concetta P. Scordo. She always had an image of our Lady of Mt. Carmel on her dresser, and there were prints of St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower) and Jesus adorning the walls. I believe all of this had a profound effect on me. I received my early Sacraments in Holy Innocents, but I believe I received my call to priesthood in Our Lady of Pompeii. That call never went away—through grade school, through high school, through college, and through seminary. I only knew two things deep in my heart: 1. I was to be a priest and 2. I was to be a Dominican. This coming June I will celebrate 50 years of being a priest and about 56 years in Vows as a Dominican. I don’t regret any of it. I’ve been a Prior (religious superior), a Pastor, an Assistant (Parochial Vicar), a Navy Chaplain, a Treasurer of our major seminary. It wasn’t always easy, but I knew in my heart of hearts that if I kept my vow of Obedience, God would take care of me—and He did! Now I have come home to you to be one of your priests, to love and care for you, and most especially to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified to you. St Paul knew the need for that, and so did St. Dominic—that’s why he founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). I am proud to be a Dominican and proud to be a son of Holy Innocents/Our Lady of Pompeii. Please pray for Fr. Bernard Timothy and me that our ministry there will be fruitful and will lead us all to heaven. Fr. Joseph A. Scordo, O.P.
