FR. JIM’S CORNER

Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, D.C., established the “Manifesting the Kingdom Award” when he was our Bishop here in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This award has been con-tinued by our current Bishop David Zubik. The Manifesting the Kingdom Award is given every other year to recognize parishioners for their extraordi-nary service to their parish. It is given by the Diocesan Bishop to laymen and laywomen who have demon-strated the presence of Jesus in their lives. The award recognizes service to the Church reflected in so many different ways in the way they live their lives. As Pastor/Administrator, I am responsible for sub-mitting the name or name of potential nominees. I have always taken this responsibility seriously and prayerfully. Therefore, I am happy to announce that the recipient from Holy Spirit Parish for 2017 will be Miss Roseanne H. Schnarrenberger. And I am happy to announce that the “recipients” for St. Nicholas Parish for 2017 will be broth-ers John P. Koch, Michael R. Koch and Ryan J. Koch. They will receive their award from Bishop Zubik along with the honorees from the other parishes in our six county diocese on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 2:30 pm. Past recipients from HS Parish have been: Dolores Russell, M/M Jack Stout, M/M Bucky Palermo, Mrs. Elaine Magill, Dolores and Edward Zelik, Mary Miller, Carol Haubach and M/M Thomas Hollinger. Past recipients from SN Parish have been: Joseph Profozich, Mary Petrich, Anthony Pavick, Joseph and Theresa Delack, Sandra Koch, Jean and Bob Ehrman, Richard and Janet Kopec and Vincent and Mary Jaksic. Congratulations to Rose, John, Michael and Ryan for their generosity in giving of their time and talent to en-rich the lives of our parishes.

God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Richness of Life in Christ

Today we have the beautiful story of the woman prom-ised a child, the wonderful ex-hortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Je-sus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many chal-lenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgi-cal life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Res-urrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

COMMUNITY NEWS

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It's Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Inde-

pendence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the politi-cal scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning "Charles Carroll of Carrolltown"--a defiant "come and get me if you dare" postscript aimed at the British.

Carroll's brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep de-sire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

ON MISSION: NOW WHAT?

The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is entering a new phase as we continue planning and working for the future of the Church of Pittsburgh. The On Mission Commission, a group of over 80 clergy, religious and lay members from across the diocese are studying the proposed parish groupings and considering the feedback gathered from recent parish surveys and town hall meetings. The Com-mission will offer recommendations that will eventually be shared with Bishop Zubik, who will make

the ultimate determination. While final decisions have yet to be made, they are being discerned based upon the input you have provided. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more about your parish grouping and to stay informed.
