FR. JIM’S CORNER

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is often the most misunderstood of all the sacraments. Hopefully, I am able to clarify many of those misconcep-tions. If you think of the Anointing of the Sick is just for the extremely old or the critically ill or if you assume that the only time you can receive it is at the moment of death, you are not alone. Many Catholics still think of the sacrament that way. The fact is that it is the sign of Christ’s healing presence in the world. Who can receive it? Anyone, regardless of age, can receive the sacrament if his or her health is seriously weakened. It can be administered before surgery and contrary to many people’s beliefs it can be received more than once if the original illness gets worse or if an-other serious sickness is diagnosed. In the letter of James we read “If anyone among you is sick; He should summon the presbyters and they should pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise them up.” These words are still true today – the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is the Church’s way to continue the healing work of Jesus. This Sacrament used to be known as “Extreme Unc-tion” or the “Last Rites.” We only have seven sacraments and in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick the church has returned to the truer origins which the scrip-ture says “they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them”. On Monday, October 16, 2017, we will be celebrat-ing a Mass of the Anointing of the Sick at 6:30 pm in Holy Spirit Church. We would love to have you register by calling the parish office and leaving your name or the name of the person to be anointed. The Christian Moth-ers will host this event. In the context of the Mass, the ritual consists of prayer, laying on of hands, anointing with the sacred oil and reception of Holy Communion. Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. Catho-lics feel and experience pain as do all other people; yet their faith helps them grasp more deeply the mystery of suffering giving them insight to bear their pain with great courage. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick does not remove the mystery of suffering; rather the Anoint-ing of the sick celebration gives us a window into the mystery of a caring and loving God.

God Bless. Idi sa Bogom Fr. Jim

WHERE TWO OR THREE ARE GATHERED The goal of On Mission for The Church Alive! is to build up and strengthen the Body of Christ, the Church in Pittsburgh. While this process involves many as-pects, including studying how our parishes are structured, fundamentally it is about fostering rela-tionships rooted in faith and love. We are all beloved children of God and heirs to his Kingdom. We cannot forget this as throughout the coming months and years we get to know even more of our

brothers and sisters in Christ. While we are anxious about what we might lose, we must be confident about what we will be able to gain as we grow together. “For where to or three are gathered in [Jesus’] name, there [he] is in the midst of them.” Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

SPECIAL EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS—NEXT WEEKEND

A second collection will be taken up on the weekend of Sept. 16-17 to as-sist the victims of Hurricane Harvey for humanitarian and church needs. This one-time appeal will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and their member agencies to respond to the immediate needs for such necessities as shelter, clean water, food and medi-cal care. Since you will obviously not have a special envelope in your packet, you are asked to remit any checks pay-able to the “Diocese of Pittsburgh”, marked “Hurricane Harvey” in the memo field. Please be as generous as possible to our suffering brothers and sisters.

COMMUNAL ANOINTING OF THE SICK MASS The Fall Mass for the Communal Anointing of the Sick will take place on MONDAY, OCTOBER 16th at 6:30 PM in Holy Spirit Church. The Christian Mothers will host this event and act as greeters, ushers to assist with seating and hosting the reception. The Mass will be followed by a light reception in the Cafeteria. Reservations are rec-ommended by calling the parish office and leaving your name or the name of the person to be anointed. See “Fr. Jim’s Corner” for more information about this Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

THE SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND is for the Bishop’s Education Fund. Please be generous.

MISSION APPEAL Our annual Mission Cooperation Appeal will take place the weekend of September 30 and October 1st. Fr. James Okoye, C.S.Sp. will be here and preach at all the Masses at Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas. Fr. Okoye is the Director of the Center for Spiritan Studies at Duquesne University. The Spiritan Fathers were previously known as the Holy Ghost Fathers who served St. Anthony’s and Holy Spirit for many, many years. The second collection on Sep-

tember 30/Oct. 1 will be taken for this special Missionary Appeal.

RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT A weekend retreat for post-abortion healing will be held on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Tabor House in Millvale. To register or for more information, call Toni Jester at 412-352-5348 or email [email protected].
