Hello all you beautiful Divas and Guys!

It has been one heck of a month for me. Having hurt my wrist and destroyed by PC, I thought life would soon get back to normal, but sadly, my mother passed away and I was up and down to East London trying to sort everything out. If I have been remiss is dealing with any enquiries sent through, I do apologise. I now have a new PC and ask that you please resend any queries that may have been lost on my side.

Due to the recession (!!!!) we have all had to tighten our tool belts, and the Divas are no exception. Nancy and I work as a team for the DIY Divas, but if anyone is looking for an EXCELLENT housekeeper, she is now looking for employment for Monday to Friday. Not only can she run your household - she can fix itup as well ! Please drop us a line at [email protected] if you are interested and are situated in the Randpark Ridge/Weltevreden Park region.

When it comes decorating hallways many homeowners forget that these spaces are just as important as the rest of the home. Carrying through a colour used in the home and adding artwork is all that needs to be done.

Unfortunately, most hallways are extremely narrow and the decorating rules you used for the rest of your home simply don’t work when you reach this point. They only serve to make the space seem crowded, dark and claustrophobic - not exactly the kind of image you want to conjure. So how do you take such a small space and make it seem wider?

Furnishing your spaceWhile that antique chair or decorative table might be a wonderful piece, it may also be too large and serve to only highlight the lack of room and make guests believe that you had nowhere else to put it. Turn instead to accessories that hang on the walls or will rest flush against them. Mirrors, flowers, small tables, etc., will make the space appealing but won’t bring the walls further in. While you usually want your home to appear more intimate, this is a space that you want to make as large as possible. Work with the wallsWhile the rest of your home may be shades of glorious red or deep chocolate brown, this won’t work for your hallways as darker colours will only make spaces seem smaller. Choose a lighter colour palette and visual paint techniques to create the illusion of a wider, or higher space.

TOP RIGHT: If space allows you can be as creative as you like when decorating a hallway. Remember to keep to the style

used for the rest of the house.

BOTTOM RIGHT: A large space between the upper and lower levels allows for a

comfortable yet stylish arrangement.

Keep it light You also should remember the importance of lighting. Hallways are naturally dark. It is a rare one that has windows placed within it. For this reason more attention should be given to lighting. Different sources of light, such as a central fixture, wall sconcesand table lamps, will keep the space from appearing too dark.

Installing a dimmer switch can add to the decor as well, by creating mood lighting for parties or enabling you to keep the hallway lights on unobtrusively for young children. Increase this by using cleverly placed mirrors. Not only will the reflections make the spacegrow but it will also capture the light and keep it from being too dull.

ABOVE: Transform your hallway by choosing simple storage ideas. Have a storage container handy for keys, etc,. A smart lamp will bring a touch of sophistication to the space. and a gallery of photographs will add the final stylish touch. ideal home

ABOVE: Elegant furniture teamed with rich colour makes a smart first impression.A mirror placed at the end of a hallway reflects daylight back into darker areas. In the absence of natural light keep colours lighter to enhance the space. ideal home

Granted, we don’t all have nice wide hallways with architectural details and natural lighting to work with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t express yourself!

Decorating and lighting tips• Painting your hallway is the quickest and

most affordable way to decorate and update. Choose a light neutral palette for the walls and ceiling. For a long, narrow hallway paint the wall at the end in a slightly darker hue to visually shorten the length. To visually widen a narrow space, paint the narrow walls in a deeper colour than the long side walls. Pale vertical and horizontal stripes also visually create a higher or wider space.

• To make a hallway appear larger it helps to paint any doors in this space in the same colour, or close to, that used on the walls. Panels of glass in doors can help to open spaces up so that they flow together. Glass panelled doors alsoserve to provide more natural light to a dark hallway. However, in a home with children, keep the panels to the top of the door.

• Whether you have hardwood, tile, or carpeting in your hallway, you can personalise your space with a rug or runner. You can find long and narrowrugs or carpets that will add both flairand function to your home. Coordinate colours with those already used in the space. To visually lengthen a short passage use a dark coloured runner.

• Simply by adding more lighting to a hallway you can make the space appear more welcoming. Add attractive ceiling fixtures and wall sconces. Another gooddecorating tip is to place matching sconces on each side of a decorative mirror to make added impact with your hallway lighting.

• If you’ve got the height, look for a dramatic hanging pendant light or a chandelier. In a larger hallway, table lights are a good way of adding mood or ambience. However, you should make sure that there’s enough space and it won’t get knocked every time someone walks past.

ABOVE: Treat your hallways to as much style and care as you would the rest of your rooms. Concentrate on window furnishings, the view through doorways, and how furniture will fit in thespace. Keep the floors and walls clean - whitewalls can easily be touched up to cover any marks. Finish off with fresh flowers to achieve aspace worthy of travelling through.

ABOVE: Vintage finds create an interestingdisplay, with a slim console table making the ideal spot for storing keys by the door. A stack of antique storage under the table creates a quirky feel, while an ornate mirror adds an elegant finish.

Here’s how:1. Cut a piece of scrap wood to size and sand the

rough edges.

2. Measure up a piece of paper approximately 10mm smaller than your wooden block. Draw out your design on the paper in pencil, remembering to keep it simple. Go over your design in pen and cut it out.

3. Using the paper as a template, draw around your paper shape onto a piece of high density foam. Trim out your design on the foam sheet and try it for size against the block.

4. Use a hot glue gun or contact adhesive spray to stick your foam shape onto your wooden block. Once it is on, turn your block over and add pressure for a stronger hold. Remember you will get a reverse image when printing, so any letters or numbers must be glued down in reverse.

5. Varnish your block back and front. Varnish right up to the foam to make the wood water tight. Leave to dry overnight.

Your block is now ready for printing. Use fabric paint to decorate cushions, curtains, laundry bags, or try using your block on walls as a stencil.

exclusive to DIY DivasDenis Lock, SA’s Router Specialist, will present an Introductory Workshop on

Router Techniques on Saturday 22 August 2009

The basics of routingThe router is, without doubt, the most flexible power tool you could own. Itsuse is not intuitive and new owners need to be started off on the right foot if they are to realise the potential of this machine. The secret of router use is understanding the many ways there are to guide the router in relation to the piece of wood being machined. Some routing can be done freehand. Guiding the base of the router against a straight edge is the secret to forming straight edges and other straight cuts with and across the grain. The supplied fence is another way of guiding the router in a straight line in order to cut rebates, grooves and flutes. Bits with integrated bearingsallow a variety of curved and other special cuts. Guide bushes open up an exciting world of pattern routing and provide an efficient way ofduplicating components.

Learn and practice the basics of routing under the guidance of routing specialist, Denis Lock. Add a professional touch to your projects with confidence and proficiency. Places are limited forthis exclusive invitation. Workshop cost: R850 per person, including refreshments and snacks. The venue is conveniently located on Christiaan De Wet Rd, Randpark Ridge.

Good looks on a budgetFor a modern look, go for curtains with tab top and eyelets that are easily mounted onto a brushed stainless steel rod. Easy to care for and easy to hang, eyelet curtains finish off any roomwith a look that is plain yet elegant. These are pretty simple to make, too - you can buy the rings in kits from all good fabric stores,

Keep it simpleIf your windows have ‘wow’ there’s no need to overdress them. Sheer fabrics in neutral colours allow light to penetrate, keep prying eyes at bay and finish off windows with just the rightamount of pizzazz. Choose a good quality, washable fabric.

window dressingLooking to dress your windows but want something plain, simple and stylish? Home Comforts stock a wide range of curtain styles for every home. Use the following guidelines for dressing your windows in style.

If your curtains are going to be plain, you can still make them feel luxurious by choosing a fabulous fabric - such as silk - and by triple pleating the heading, making the folds fall deeply from the pole.

Turn it aroundIf you like the idea of a regular change, look for curtains that can be reversed (bottom left). These curtains are held back to show their reverse side. - in this case a darker shade of the main fabric. For a bolder finish, line your curtainswith a brighter, contrasting colour. See over for instructions on lining curtains.

If your curtains are going to be plain, you can still make them feel luxurious by choosing a fabulous fabric - such as silk - and by triple pleating the heading, making the folds fall deeply from the pole.

Pretty in plainPlain curtains will add a large block of colour to a room, and in some cases a whole wall of colour, so you need to choose them with care. Picking up a colour from accents and accessories within a room design is a good way to do this, because it blends colours together harmoniously.

Measure upFound the perfect fabric for your new curtains but not sure how to measure for them? This step by step guide should make it easy.

1. Decide on the fabric first as you needto know its width to do the sums on how much to buy. And decide on your heading tape as that affects the width of the curtains. Choose standard heading tape for shallow pleats, or pencil pleat tape for neat rows of deep pleats.

2. Measure the length of the track or pole and multiply this figure by 1.5 if you planto use standard heading tape, or by 2.5 for pencil pleat tape. Now add on 20cm overall for side hems. Divide this figureby the width of your fabric. Round up the result to the next whole number. For example, if your pole measures 200cm, multiply by 1.5 (for standard heading tape), and add on 20cm for hems, which equals 320cm. If your fabric measures 122cm wide, the sum is 320 divided by 122, which equals 2.6. The next whole number is 3. So, three widths of fabric, when gathered, will cover the window, and each curtain will be made of 1½ widths.

3. Measure from the top of the curtain track or just below a curtain pole down to the sill, floor or chosen depth. Add on 3cm forthe turning at the top and 12cm for the hem. Note down this measurement.

4. Multiply the length measurement you’ve just calculated by the number of widths of fabric needed. Then add on 10cm in case the fabric is not cut straight by the shop. If you choose a fabric with an obvious design, you will need to buy extra because each length of fabric must be cut at the same point in the design so the pattern will match right across both curtains. Ask the shop to work out the ‘pattern repeat’, and allow one pattern repeat for each width of fabric.

5. Multiply the fabric width by the number of widths needed to cover the window. Add on 10cm for each curtain.

Raising new heightsPutting a panel of colour that contrasts with the rest of the curtain right at the top will draw the eye upwards, making the room seem visually larger. It’s a simple, neat trick, and one to try in a room where the ceilings are quite low.

or lows...Visually lengthen a short window by adding contrasting panels to the bottom of a curtain.

You will need:• Dulux Javan Dawn 6 and Clouded Slate 2 -

you will only need Tester Pots for this project• White acrylic paint• Small paintbrush and thin artist’s brush• Paint trays• Masking tape, thin• Carbon paper

Here’s how:1. You will find the mural pattern on the back

pages of this issue. Enlarge the pattern as desired using a photocopier; for very large sizes, it may be necessary to tape portions together. Alternatively, use a large sheet of paper - or a roll of plain brown wrapping paper - to draw equal-sized blocks and transfer the design onto the blocked paper.

paint a muralfeature wall

Finish a large-scale artwork piece for pennies with the free pattern and a splash of paint. It’s as easy as staying inside the lines.

2. Position the pattern on the wall. Place carbon paper under the pattern; trace over the black lines of the pattern to transfer the design onto the wall. Remove the pattern, and use masking tape to mask the outside edges of the transferred design. If you smudge the design whilst transferring onto the wall, use an eraser to remove before painting.

3. Paint the coloured portions of the design

first and allow the paint to dry. Paint theoutlines with white using a narrow brush. Remove the masking tape.

4. When the paint is dry, mask a 30mm wide

band around the mural with tape. Paint the band white, allow to dry and then remove the tape.

2. Spray Alcolin contact adhesive on one side of the plywood board and the foam and leave for 10 minutes. Carefully place the foam onto the board, ensuring that it is perfectly aligned on all edges.

3. On the back of the plywood use a pencil and ruler to mark at 300mm intervals from the top and sides. Use the drill/driver to drill through the back and foam. Be careful when drilling through the foam that the drill bit does not twist the fabric - go slowly.

4. Stand the board upright against a wall. Position the fabric over the board and foam, ensuring sufficient fabric at the top and sides(70mm) to fold over and staple to the back of the board.

5. Once done, turn the headboard upside down and finish the bottom section in thesame way.

6. Thread a long upholstery needle with the string and go through the back and out the front, threading through the upholstery button and return through the back. Tie off in a large knot and use the Bosch tacker to staple the ends to the back of the board. Repeat this for all the buttons.

OptionalYou can finish off the back by stapling a pieceof canvas to the reverse side of the headboard.

Make a stationary window shade using fabrics and trims. Sew a lined panel to fitthe width of your window and slightly longer than you want it to hang from the inside top. Edge the panel with two trims, layered for interest. Here, soft-blue braided ball fringe is overlapped by chocolate beaded fringe with blue accents in the braid. Mount the top of your shade to thin plywood and install it at the inside top of your window.

A plain white lampshade is easy to improve. All it takes is a metre (or less) of fabric and coordinating trims. Cover a shade in embroidered linen and, along the bottom edge, add elegant glass-bead fringe covered with braided satin cording. Hot-glue a distinctive wide ribbon over the top and finish with more braided cording.

DIY is easy with Readi2fit kitchen components!

Manufactured by PG Bison, the Readi2fit range comprises a completeselection of kitchen components in super white melamine, flat packed, versatile and ready to assemble.

When I see anything labelled “ready to fit”I have to wonder at the skill level required. It never says, “Even a beginner could put it together.” Or even, “Some do-it-yourself knowledge required.” Like all other flat packitems, it’s a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle without the picture - tricky but easy when you get to know which piece fits where.

This article not only shows you how easy it is to kit out a garage, kitchen, or bathroom with cabinets, but provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide to doing it. We gave our workshop a makeover and provided more than enough storage for all our needs.

And for those of you wondering where all the tools and accessories are; this project shows you how nice it looks when everything is out of sight and stored for easy access, leaving us with plenty of space to work and spread out.

Each component kit contains everything you need for assembly and all holes are pre-drilled The standard cabinet has:

2 Sides1 Bottom1 Back Panel1 Back top/bottom1 Top front/back1 ShelfFittings

Insert dowels and cabinet screws. Use a mallet to gently knock in the dowels, and a screwdriver for the cabinet screws - do this on both side pieces.

Insert the lock nut with the small arrow pointing in the direction of the hole into which the cabinet screw is fastened.

On one side piece attach the top back. Make sure that the lock nut is pointing in the right direction. Tap with the rubber mallet for a tight fit.

Attach the top front in the same way.

Tap the bottom section into position, again ensuring that the lock nuts are facing in the right direction and that the dowels sit straight.

Now you can attach the back top and bottom in the correct positions and gently tap into place.

Page 17: Home-Dzine online · the mood of any room. Blues & Greys Brilliantly flexible, bluesandgreysworkinoffices, bathrooms, kitchens – just about anywhere. Greens Fresh and natural,

Before attaching the other side, slide the back panel into the grooved slots in the carcass.

Position the other side over the top of the assembly and check that dowels are straight and lock nuts pointing in the right direction. Gently tap with the rubber mallet.

Once all components are snugly fitted together, tightenthe lock nuts.

Almost done! Position the supplied shelf pins at the height where you want the shelf and then insert the supplied shelf.

As easy as that!

NEXT MONTH we show you how to install wall cabinet and cut into Formica countertops for your hob and sink.

If you’re looking to give your kitchen an update, using this method is definitelyaffordable and easy.

Once you have assembled all the cabinets you need, pop into your local hardware store and order the doors in the finish that you want. You can visit the PG Bison website for a full list of finishing options, and you can have all the cuttingand edging done at your local hardware store. They will even cut out the holes for the hinges. All you need to do is to choose your handles and purchase edging strip to apply to the carcass to match your choice of door.

Now top it off with an elegant countertop and you have a brand new kitchen at a fraction of the price.

As a makeover project we were given one of these units and decided to show you what can be done to improve the appearance.

Here’s how:1. The first step was to remove all the coating from the surface and

we were very lucky in the fact that the product used was one of those that sits on top of the wood rather than being absorbed into the wood itself. Sanding with 80-grit soon revealed the wood underneath.

2. Once down to the wood (pine) we used 120-grit sandpaper to smooth down all the rough surfaces and finally finished off with240-grit sandpaper.

DIY Tip: We used a multi sander for the harder sanding and finished

off with our Bosch Random Orbit Sander to ensure a flat, evensurface to the top and front.

3. To remove all the dust, dampen a lint-free cloth with mineral turps and wipe the entire unit. Allow to dry.

4. Now we’re ready to apply Woodoc sealer to the unit. The stain concentrate was added to the Woodoc 10 and stirred well. You will need to stir occasionally to ensure that the contents remain well mixed.

5. Use a paintbrush to apply Woodoc 10 to the entire unit in even brush strokes from left to right. On areas where the sealer is absorbed immediately, apply more sealer - the wood is thirsty! Allow the first coat to dry completely and then rub down withWoodoc SteelWool. This removes any excess left on top of the wood and ensures a smooth finish once complete.

woodoc works

wonders! You often see roadside vendors offering basket storage cabinets, and although

I think that they offer a great way to add extra storage to a room, the quality

and finishing leaves little to be desired. The wood is not sanded smooth, the

finish isn’t applied to the undersideof the wood and the general overall

appearance cries out for TLC!

Home-Dzineonline19

LEFT: After sealing with Woodoc 10 and mahogany stain concentrate this storage unit now has a rich, warm, silky smooth finish.

DIY Tip:To avoid excess air bubbles on the surface of the wood, dip the brush into the sealer and allow any excess to run off - don’t scrape the paintbrush against the side of the tin.

6. Wipe the surface clean with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth before applying the second coat of Woodoc 10. Once dry you can apply the third and final coat.

To keep the wood looking rich and glossy use Woodoc Antique Wax.

Page 20: Home-Dzine online · the mood of any room. Blues & Greys Brilliantly flexible, bluesandgreysworkinoffices, bathrooms, kitchens – just about anywhere. Greens Fresh and natural,

When restoring or giving older furniture a makeover, it is important to bear in mind that paint containing lead was probably used. For this reason we wanted to ensure that all the paint was removed. This was easily done on the ends, but doing the sides was not so easy.

That’s where the Skil Octo came in very handy. Included is a sanding attachment for curves, and that made our task much easier (see next page).

Once all the paint had been removed we mixed a small quantity of Buttermilk stain concentrate into Woodoc 10 interior sealer and stirred well. This will give a slight tint to the Meranti and enhance the natural colour and grain.

The ends of the cot were painted with Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch in Gloss White.

3. Apply a second coat of Deep Seal in the opposite direction as the first coat as this willhelp to avoid streaking.

4. A third and fourth coat may be necessary. Remember that Deep Seal is a penetrating sealer and is designed to sit within the tile, and not on top. Therefore you should stop applying the sealer when it begins to sit on top of the tile. Do not disturb and allow to dry for 4 to 6 hours. Do not allow water on the tiles for 48 hours after sealing.

Removing efflorescencePressure washing or scrubbing with a bristle brush and fresh water will remove the salts from the surface

of tiles. You must be careful to rinse the surface with fresh water so that no residue is left to dry on the concrete. Use an air jet or a wet and dry vacuum cleaner to remove any standing water. Any remaining solution will cause new efflorescence to appear. If, once the tiles aredry, there are still salts on the surface, repeat the process.

Here’s how:1. Inspect the floor before sealing to ensure

that it is clean, as dirt may have settled after the last cleaning operation. Dry dirt can be swept or vacuumed before sealing, but it is important to protect the floor from wet dirtbetween cleaning and sealing. Do not seal if there are any grout residue or any other type of dirt on the floor. Remove grout residueand other dirt before sealing, and remember that you will have to wait 48 hours before sealing with Deep Seal.

Note:For new installations wait 10 to 14 days after the tile has been installed and 48 hours after cleaning before sealing.

2. Once the floor is clean and dry, apply a thineven coat of Tile & Floor Care Deep Seal so that the grouting is also sealed. Don’t use a roller of any type, as they do not deposit enough sealer and cause bubbles. Suitable applicators are a sheepskin applicator, lint free cloth or a good quality paint brush respectively. One litre covers 5 to 10 square meters, depending on porosity. Do not disturb and allow to dry for 4 to 6 hours.

The table measures 1800mm long, 732mm wide and 735mm high. The benches are the same length as the table, 288mm wide and 450mm high. The table is a standard height, but adjust the long rails and top boards in the cutting list - found on the back page - to vary the length.

This versatile indoor or outdoor table is solid enough to seat a crowd and perfect for alfresco dining on the patio. Dress it up with a few comfy cushions and a colourful runner or tablecloth.

Cut the partsMark up and cut all the parts of the table and frame to size, cutting the long rails and end-frame top rails with a mitre saw to 45º.

DIY Tip:Place lengths of timber together to cut multiple matching parts and keep the sizes identical.

1. On the legs, mark the lower rail housings 150mm up. Mark the upper housings flushwith the top on the two outer leg faces. Make all housings 3mm shallower than the rail thickness so the rails protrude slightly (see image top right).

2. Set the depth stop on a sliding compound mitre saw to match the rail thickness less 3mm, making a series of parallel cuts, removing waste with a hammer and chisel and smoothing. Position an offcut next to the fence so the blade can make a full sweep.

3. Mark screw positions and drill pairs of clearance holes at the ends of the long rails and end-frame rails. A clearance hole is slightly larger than the screw. Bore through just the rail so the screw grabs the leg when tightened.

4. Apply Alcolin Aqua wood glue to the housing then position the end-frame top and base rails, check the frame for square and secure through the clearance holes using 75mm x 10g galvanised screws with self-countersinking heads.

5. Stand the end frames up, apply glue to the housings and clamp the long rails, checking joints are tight and square, securing with 75mm screws. Wait for the glue to dry before cutting away excess with a chisel.

6. On the end-frame and long rails, mark the centre of the top and base braces, with corresponding marks on the braces. Apply glue and clamp, securing with 75mm screws. Clamp both rail and brace to keep the brace centred while drilling.

7. Leave the glue to cure before cleaning the joints using a sharp chisel and a block plane then apply two coats of Dulux Weatherguard. Paint the end grain of the mitred corners before assembling the table.

Make the table topPosition the top boards on the frame, about 8mm apart, with an even overhang at the ends. Mark the position of the frame on theboards, drill pilot and countersink holes, securing with 75mm screws.

Make the benchesThe benches are built the same way as thetable. Adjust the timber size according to the cutting list on the back page and have the supplier cut the 70 x 70mm legs to size from the same 88 x 88mm treated pine. Position thelower rail housings 100mm from the bottom of the legs, and space the top boards 8mm apart.

For the bench frame, attach the top braces about 560mm from either end of the long rails.

Finishing the topsUse a belt sander and 180-grit belt to smooth over the table top and benches before applying Woodoc 50 to finish.

DIY Tips:Use 75mm x 10g galvanised screws for the table and 50mm x 10g to make the benches.

Use Alcolin Aqua wood glue to keep the table and benches entirely weatherproof.

Armed with our Woodoc 55 in Dark Brown for the frames, and Woodoc Deck Dressing in Deep Brown, we packed up our little bakkie and set off to work some Divas magic!

The varnish was flaking and we started bysanding all the frames with our Bosch Multi Sander and 120-grit sandpaper to remove the old surface. You need to take off the old varnish so that the sealer can penetrate. Woodoc sealer is absorbed deep into the timber, protecting and nourishing.

Once all the varnish was removed, we used a Bosch Random Orbit Sander to smooth the surface. Always wipe clean with a cloth dampened with mineral turpentine to remove any dust before applying sealer to the timber and allow to dry.

We applied a liberal coat of Woodoc 55 to the frames, making sure to get into all the corners, seams and underneath as much as possible. This coat was left to dry for the day and in the

rescue

The Colourful Corner Nursery in Randpark Ridge has a lapa, deck and pond quietly tucked away in the corner. Over the years the wooden windows and doors, as well as the deck have been left uncared for and the DIY Divas decided that this was the perfect project to show you just how easy it is to restore outdoor timber - in a weekend!

Page 26: Home-Dzine online · the mood of any room. Blues & Greys Brilliantly flexible, bluesandgreysworkinoffices, bathrooms, kitchens – just about anywhere. Greens Fresh and natural,

late afternoon we used Woodoc SteelWool to remove any excess sealer remaining on the surface. This is important as it prevents build up and ensures that the second and third coats are smooth and glossy.

The steps were washed clean and painted with two coats of Prominent Paving in a deep green. Prominent Paving provides a very hard, durable finish for cement and cement brick drivewaysand perfect for patios and paving.

Time to tackle the deck

The surface was given a light sanding to remove what was left of the old varnish, and

three coats of Woodoc Deck Sealer applied - allowing sufficient drying timebetween coats. Woodoc Deck Sealer is perfect for soft and porous wood such as Pine and Meranti.

For hardwood and dense wood, use Woodoc Deck Dressing - A tinted wood dressing formulated to protect and treat dense wood decking and decks that do not readily accept a conventional sealer e.g. Balau, Rhodesian Teak, Garapa and Iroko. High in UV-inhibitors and water repellent, it is ideal for first time treatment and maintenance of decks. It is also suitable for roughly-sawn wood.

set in stoneThere’s no such thing as a zero maintenance garden - but there is such as a thing as a very low maintenance garden. The trick is in creating a space that’s easy to care for, but still has enough interest in it to make you want to spend time there (and invite your friends over).

Hard landscaping is obviously the way to add interest - in terms of different materials and changes of level, but that has to be tempered with clever planting that looks good all year round, but needs little care. Basically, you just want to have a sweep round and a quick prune once a month, and be done with it.

In a garden where relaxation and entertaining are frequent pursuits you’ll naturally crave some privacy. The best way to do that - apart from building tall walls or fences all the way around it - is to plant climbers and trees to create a screen. If you do this, consider your neighbours - if you’re going to be blocking their sunlight, it’s likely they’ll be unhappy; equally, putting trees very close to your or their house is never a good idea. However, grouping trees towards the end of your garden will create a screen in that area and a view that you can enjoy from the house.

Modern hard landscaping design transforms the classic square or rectangle into something much more interesting. Even though the design may be simple, variations in materials used, the combination of different colours and plant varieties soften the effect. In a traditional space, you would ideally pick a colour that blends with the natural tones of the surrounding area - so creams, pale blues, and greens. For a contemporary look you can afford to work with colours that contrast with the natural surroundings - think greys, blacks, reds, even purple.

a quiet placeA cosy corner in this small garden serves as a quiet place to sit back, relax and take in the scents and sights that surround.

Come rain or shineCreating a deck with built-in seating like this one really commits you to sitting there come cloud or shine - so choose the position carefully. Privacy is important, but so is the amount of shade and sunlight you’ll get. If you place yours in a sunny spot, invest in a large parasol to protect your friends (or children) who’d rather be in the shade - or plant something that will give you natural, if dappled shade.

Table with a viewThere’s nothing worse than sitting in a dining area of a garden, staring at nothing but a

scrubby patch of grass. Planting for interest is vitally important - so combine colourful and scented plants, such as lavendar (which will also attract butterflies and bees), prettyclimbers, such as honeysuckle or jasmine with spiky, architectural plants, such as palms or flax.

Storage hide awayJust as you’d build or buy a table with a lift up lid, seating can be given the same treatment. Invest in cushions you can store within your seating and bring out when you’re sitting outside. Look for cushions that are designed for the outdoors and can go in the washing machine.

There’s a place for colourful paint even in a garden that emphasises a single hue or a few harmonious colours. To heighten a monochromatic effect, paint furniture or hardscape the same colour. For example, in a garden of yellows - with colours ranging from chartreuse to orange-kissed hues - the best bet is paint that’s a pure yellow, something right in the middle of all those shades. That way, it will serve as a visual anchor to pull everything together. You can also use paint to create vignettes of colour harmony.

buying a Jigsaw

If you have attended one of the DIY Divas workshops you will know that we are always mention the fact that our jigsaw has a built-in laser light...

This laser light feature allows you to cut perfectly straight lines without having to bend over to see what is going on, or getting sawdust blown into your eyes.

The bright red beam makes it much easier for us DIY Divas to cut straight, which is not always an easy task with a jigsaw.

Bosch one-hand SDS ensures effortless and safe saw blade changes within seconds – without the need for additional tools. Other useful features include a switchable air blast function that ensures a clear view of the cutting line at all times.

Use your jigsaw for cutting wood, plastic, aluminium and board products. There are so many ways to use a Jigsaw - you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one!

use the right blade...Bosch T101AO jigsaw blades are especially narrow for when you need to make tight curves in wood, plywood, plastics, compressed materials and card. Use these blades for fine cutting and no tearing at theedge of the cut.

guide - don’t push...Did you know that you don’t need to push a Bosch jigsaw to cut? The Bosch jigsaw is so powerful it only needs to be gently guided along the marked line.

fischer fill & fix consists of a solvent-freepolyurethane-based injection compound that is injected in the hole, expands to a definedvolume and cures quickly.

Suitable for anchoring fixing elements, for filling and repairingstripped holes or as a repair compound for all board materials.

When the compound is cured, any screws, eyes, hooks or similar items with diameters from 2 to 6 mm can be easily screwed in and out – just like wood. No predrilling required (except for board materials).

fischer fill & fix is suitable for all building materials and works well, even in difficult and worn construction materials (old buildings).

The contents of the cartridge (25 ml) are sufficient for at least 4holes 10mm diameter x 50mm depth.

Here’s how:1. Snap off the lid and attach the syringe. This combines the 2-

part compound.

2. Place the syringe in the pre-drilled hole and slowly inject the contents. The compound expands to fill thehole.

3. Wait 5 minutes and then remove any excess from the surface with a sharp utility knife.

4. The filled hole is now ready to accept your fixing.

The new fischer fill & fix injection fixing allows maximum flexibilityand very easy installation.

Q. LisaI wonder if you can help me. Can you recommend a company in JHB that can do patterned glass splashbacks?

A. JaniceI don’t know of anyone personally, but would suggest that you get in touch with someone who specialises in Mosaic. There are a couple of companies in Joburg that supply glass tiles but they don’t do the installation, whereas a Mosaic Artist would be able to install for you. Alternatively, why not give it a try yourself - it’s not that difficult!

Q. BryonyI have a 5 in 1 Pentagon Power Tool (cordless).I am not happy with it because the battery always seems to be flat and even when its not it doesn’tseem to have as much power as the electric power tools. It also says that I have to drain the battery after I have used it. How do you do this? Then I have to power up again for many hours before I use it again - a pain. I am looking to buy another one - obviously I would like a cordless one but not if I am sacrificing on power. I know thatyou recommend Bosch. Should I get a cordless or electric? Should I get a multifunction one.

A. JaniceI must admit that I haven’t heard of Pentagon! We use the Bosch PSR 12 & 18 18 Cordless Drill/Drivers for all our projects. Bosch cordless tools use Lithium Ion batteries, which is what makes them much better than any other make. Lithium Ion batteries do not have a memory - as do other makes - and you can charge them for short or long periods without affecting the battery. To drain (discharge) the battery you need to use it until it is completely flat (dead) and thenrecharge for the full recommended time - not something you need to do with Bosch tools. If you want to drill into walls - cement/concrete - you won’t be able to use the Bosch PSR, but will need a corded Bosch Hammer Drill - these retail around R350 and I normally suggest that you get a drill/driver and a hammer drill, as the hammer drill is heavy, whilst the PSR is very light.
