Phonics Phase 5; learning to add the suffix ‘ed’.
Day 1 You can teach adding –ed as a spelling rule rather than as a new sound for the children to
learn. (In year 2 they will learn about the different ways to use the suffix)
A verb is a doing word. -ed goes at the end of a root verb. It changes the verb from
present tense to past tense. Shout – shouted. A suffix goes on the end of root words to
change the meanings.
In some examples, the short –ed will make a /t/ sound in words such as ‘jumped’.
Sometimes, the long -ed sound will make an /id/ sound as in ‘started’. These are mistakes
children often make in spellings because it’s what they hear.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxl28KQOHy4
Add the suffix ‘ed’ to the following verbs.
Jump
Hunt
Gasp
Shout
Watch
Decide which kind of sound the ‘ed’ is making in each word.
Day 2 Read the following words out loud.
jumped, looked, gasped, yelled
These are all real words. Write the next words into real and nonsense words. Remember if
you’re not sure about a word then say it into a sentence. If you can’t put it into a
sentence, it’s probably not real.
Stimmered, pulled, relped, stayed, nained, cleaned, plenned, rained
Day 3 Below are some past tense verbs but they have all been jumbled up.
Unscramble the words to work out what the verbs are. Remember all the words will end in
ed so you know where to put that sound from the start.
Day 4 We have learnt that the suffix -ed can make different sounds.

Below is a table with the three different sounds ‘ed’ makes and a list of words. Complete the word
sort activity.
Some children will also need consolidation of phase 3/4 phonics, please use the following links to help with
this as well as phase 5 cards:

Literacy
Day 1 Choose one of the animals from below.
Step 1: Draw the animal yourself and then label all the
body parts.
Step 2: Research some facts about your chosen animal
and write a description.
Day 2 Show children a video of some chickens as a hook.
This week we will learn the differences between caged
hens and free-range hens kept for egg production and
the associated welfare issues. Show children an egg box
and explain that we’re going to learn about the hens
that laid the eggs.
Hens need certain things to be happy and healthy. One
of their needs is to behave normally - to do all of the
things they like to do. These include:
1.flapping their wings
2.being with other hens
3.pecking and scratching at the ground
4.having nests to lay eggs in
5.dustbathing
6.sleeping on a perch at night.
Think about these things when you look at the two
pictures.
• Show two images, one of caged hens and the other of
free-range hens. Ask children to describe the difference
in each picture.
Day 3 Imagine you were treated like a caged hen in school.
You have to sit under the tables with 3 other people.
Can you move you arms?
Imagine you are a caged hen and you can’t do the things
you need to do to stay happy and healthy.
Hens are sometimes kept in barns but as long as they have
enough space and the right facilities, they can still be
happy. Use what you know to explain, in full sentences,
why a caged hen wouldn’t be happy. Imagine you are
trying to persuade people not to keep hens in cages by
using persuasive language.

Day 4 What do you need to stay happy and healthy? Choose 6 things you would need to stay happy and
healthy and write a list. Now explain why you need each other those things.

Maths Please note that because of the way we started our learning packs, the
teaching slide dates on the white rose website do not match the actual
date. If you wish to use the White Rose teaching slides to support your
child’s learning then please follow the date given above the work
sheet. Answers can also be found here.
This week’s worksheets have some questions that will be
helpful for parents to ask whilst children are doing the
maths. If children are working independently however,
they only need to answer the main questions (on the
right).
