Coronavirus affects daily life of Witness workers in South Korea

Bock Ki Kim and Sook Kyoung Park, Witness workers in Chuncheon, write: “In the last four to five days there was a public announcement that most public systems will be closed for one or two weeks. These include kindergarten, public libraries, public schools, universities and religious institutions. We have cancelled or postponed all our meetings, including Mennonite Seoul (our church group).” Bock Ki Kim writes, “The coronavirus is overwhelming many people and many of

us stay at home these days. I am no exception. The situation outside the house is difficult; the number of infected people is rapidly rising. But I don't want to spend time in vain, so I am finishing the final proofread of two forthcoming books that I am translating into Korean: one is new, John Roth’s Stories, one is old, Waldemar

Janzen’s Work and Rest.” Pray that Bock Ki and Sook Kyoung will be a presence of peace to their community.

MDS to be Celebrated at the Mennonite Community Orchestra Concert on

March 15, 2 PM at Jubilee Place, 173 Talbot Ave. (at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute). Admission to the concert is by donation. In 1815, Ludwig von Beethoven composed his Eroica Symphony to celebrate the general spirit of heroism in the world. On March 15, Winnipeg’s Mennonite Community Orchestra (MCO) will celebrate a local hero when it performs the Eroica Symphony—Mennonite Disaster Service. At the concert, the MCO “wants to recognize these people, and MDS as an organization, for representing the best of what we can be as people who care about the plight of others, and who want to help make the world a better place,” Under the direction of Andrea Bell, the MCO is comprised of 50 musicians from Winnipeg and southern Manitoba.

Inside Our Doors

1. Coming up in Adult Education . . .

This week we will be hearing faith stories from some of those who are

becoming members at Home Street this month. This Sunday (the 2st)

we will hear stories from Emilie Z and Gordon J.

2. Home Street is looking forward to a baptism service in early June. If

you are considering baptism (or just want to participate in faith

exploration conversations) please get in touch with Phil or Judith. The

frequency and timing of these conversations will be sorted out once we

know who is interested.

3. Drawing on the wisdom of faith, the Mennonite Heritage Gallery is

hosting a Sunday afternoon Coffee House, ‘Songs, Hymns and Stories in

Defence of Creation’. Enjoy performances of songs and stories, and lots

of singing together. Sunday, March 8, from 2:00 to 4:30 PM, 600

Shaftesbury Blvd.

4. In preparation for the combined Good Friday service, anyone

interested in joining the choir for that morning is invited to attend

rehearsals on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:15 PM at Home Street

Mennonite Church (March 17, 24, 31, and April 7). The ensemble will be

led by Ben and Matt P; accompanied by Leanne R-L. If you enjoy singing

the music of Stainer, Bach, and Beethoven, as well as some Taizé music,

please join us.

5. Support the coalition Make Poverty History by attending a fundraising

concert on Thursday, March 12, 8:00 p.m. at the West End Cultural

Centre. The line-up includes: The Duhks, Double the Trouble, Lana

Winterhalt; the event is hosted by Al Simmons. Tickets are $20 and can

be purchased at the door or online through wecc.ca.

6. Offering last week - $6121.

7. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner on March 22! Share dinner together

and get to know some fellow Home Streeters! Sign up to be a host

(providing the main course and drinks) or a guest (bringing a salad or

dessert), and you’ll be matched up for a supper together. This event

makes it easy to host (or be hosted) by people whom you may not

know. Please sign up by March 18 at http://bit.ly/ShareDinner or by

filling out a paper copy at the back of the sanctuary.

8. Please consider signing a petition (in the back of the church) to support Island Lake’s plea for a hospital. Island Lake is Manitoba’s 6th largest lake. Its isolated shores are home to three First Nations communities, Garden Hill, St. Theresa Point and Wasagamack. Combined with neighbouring Red Sucker Lake, all of which are only accessible by air or winter road (even between each other), the population is over 14,000 people. There are decades-old serious health problems, very inadequate health services in these communities and severe challenges in transporting very ill people to appropriate medical care. A petition is being circulated requesting federal Minister of Indigenous Services, Hon. Marc Miller, to build a hospital and the Government of Canada to act quickly to improve health services in this region.
