    Highlights of the Holiday Luncheon

Our annual holiday luncheon was held at El Zariba Shriners Temple and was well attended with 57 members and guests having made reser-vations. It was good to see old friends and spouses in attendance, some that we only see at our holiday luncheons.

Diane Bennett made the initial introductions, followed by President Dolf Strom who re-viewed club highlights from both last and this

    year.

50/50 drawins were won by Janet Arrington and Jan Koepsel. Door Prize winners were Dick Dippold, Bill Randall, Jim Laird, Car-ol Cunningham and Cindy Koepke.

Persons seated in chairs #6 and #3 took home the centerpieces. Selected photos are below and more can be found at our website.

On behalf of the Club Officers and Directors, we hope all members and their families

have enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday season

    President’s Column

On behalf of all Club members I would like to thank our Events Manager Diane Bennett for an outstanding December Charity Luncheon. This year’s attendance was higher than last year. Food, service, ambience, etc. were all great. Thank you Diane.

I am writing this column after our Charity Luncheon event but before Christmas. Since I still be-lieve in Santa Claus, I thought I could ask Santa for three items:

Number 1 is 10 to 20 new members, and since referrals are not working that well, let’s hope Santa delivers.

Number 2 is a Fix-It Guys Coordinator. Our present Coordinator is 90 and would like to re-tire. If we don’t get a new Coordinator the Fix-It Guys will go away . . . very much like if Santa’s helpers loose Santa then there would be no more presents but in our case there will be cub members with needed handyman type jobs.

Number 3 is a Webmaster. Our Webmaster has been on the job for 15 years and would like someone to take over our website and the email delivery of Cliff Notes newsletter. Without a new Webmaster, the website would become old like lumps of coal and the distribution of the newsletter would be via snail mail. That’s not good.

Let’s all hope that Santa will deliver so that the New Year will be the best ever for our Cub.

    Dolf Strom, President

New Honeywell Corporate policy prevents providing the Club with names of new retirees or deceased em-ployees. We need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or the passing of a former employee.

    Editor’s Corner

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Club Monthly Board Meetings will now be held at the Scottsdale Senior Center (same location as meetings) at 11:30 am in Room 10. Feel free to bring a lunch, meet with the Board and provide your thoughts and input.

The history of Honeywell, old editions of the Newsletter and a link to Scholarship Program information and forms can be found on the HGRC webpage http://www.garrettretireesaz.com/

If there is something that you would like to see in the newsletter, or if you want to comment on the Newsletter itself, e-mail the in-formation to [email protected]! We will publish, space available and the approval of the Board. Any comments or claims made within the publication are solely the responsibility of the individual authors and do not necessarily express the views of Honeywell Inc. or the Directors, Officers, Staff or members of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona. If we are notified of employ-ment opportunities, we will send to members by a special email.

With our revised club guidelines that will change the roles and increase the number of Board Members, we are again encouraging members to attend Board Meetings as a guest to influence and support Club policies.

    January 8 Meeting

We’ll learn about rattlesnakes, Gila mon-sters, gopher snakes, and desert tortoises! We will learn what to do if we see they ev-er see or hear a rattlesnake in the wild, why Gila monsters are such amazing animals, why desert tortoises are protected animals, and how to tell if a snake is venomous or non-venomous. We explore various methods of staying safe in our desert environment as well. Please note that this demonstration does include live venomous animals, but that

    free to contact Warren, 480.510.9304.

    Monthly Charity News

Our club donates to two types of recipients using two sources of funds. From our dues, we allocate $100 per month to local non-profit charities. Consideration is given to charities that provided speakers to our monthly meetings. The charities are selected and funds are distributed at the May board meeting unless a speaker re-ceives the funds at the club meeting..

A list of the charities that we have supported in the past is posted on our website. If you have a favorite char-ity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

Also from our dues, we donate $100 per month, $800 total, and another $1500 per year ($2300 total)to the Scholarship Foundation. In addition our members can donate directly to the Scholarship Foundation. Mem-ber donations to date are $5783.

This Club season donations will be selected at the May Board Meeting and reported in the following September Newsletter

Hello fellow Honeywell retirees! My name is Cheryl Wiley. I am the Scholarship Board’s new Chairperson. A great big THANK YOU to Gwen Scheetz and Jim Redmond for all their help as they transition off the Board, and new people volunteering their time for this worthy cause. Please welcome our new Board members Paul Christopherson, Mary Harris and Brian Unsworth. We look forward to implementing the Board’s goals for this Application and Award season.

THANK YOU to everyone who made donations last year. All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of our deserving recipients. The cost of a college education has been in-creasing yearly. And as you’ve probably seen in the news recently, student loan debt is at an all-time high. Our recipients are very grateful for your generous donations, as is the Board!

Students receiving our scholarships are all family members of retired Honeywell & Garrett em-ployees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family mem-bers of people you worked with for years. Applications will be accepted starting December 1 and are due no later than April 1, 2020. If you have a family member who would qualify for our scholarship, please send them an application and encourage them to submit it in a timely man-ner. Applications can be found on our website at www.hrcaz.org. Click on the Scholarships tab on the left side of the page.

Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advi-sor).

If you would like to donate at any time throughout our fiscal year, please make your check pay-able to: Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation

    Southwest Airlines Tour Wednesday, April 15, 2010, 10:00 a.m.

This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Fa-cility at Sky Harbor Airport.

You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an air-craft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell.

This free tour is planned for Wednesday, April 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. but names of all attendees are required in advance for security purposes. This will be our fourth tour and spaces fill quickly. I have to limit the group to 40 for practical reasons.

To register send the full names of all in your party to Keith Hughes at [email protected] or call 623-825-5243 for details.

    Arizona Falls Tuesday, January 14, 2020, 10:30 a.m.

    G. R. Herberger Park, 56th Street and Indian School Road

Arizona Falls, formed by a natural 20-foot drop along the Arizona Canal be-tween what is now 56th and 58th streets, reopened in June 2003 as a re-stored hydroelectric plant and neighborhood gathering place where visitors can learn, interact and reflect.

The new Arizona Falls combines art, history, and technology to generate clean electricity from the canal's waterfall.

Features The site showcases the Phoenix Art Commission’s "Water Works at Arizona Falls" project, designed by renowned Boston artists Lajos Heder and Mags Harries. The main entrance is on the south side; a footbridge connects the north bank to the viewing platform.

Visitors, surrounded by water on three walls in the water room, may sit on large boulders as they enjoy the cool and soothing sounds of flowing water.

Through sheets of flowing water, the antique gears used in the original hy-droelectric plant can be seen. Two aqueducts frame the room to create the feeling of being inside the historic waterfall. A shade structure covers stone block seats near a pool of water, allowing visitors to enjoy the experience year-round.

Where: G.R. Herberger Park, 56th Street and Indian School Road.

Meet at the power plant at 10.30am. People can hike or bike and then lunch and tour the plant at their leisure.

Contact Kevin Vetter for more details. Email [email protected] call 602-942-0038.

    A Holiday Love Story

    Her response -

    Sweetheart,

I am sorry about getting into an argument about putting up the Christmas lights. I guess that some-times I feel like you are pushing me too hard when you want something. I realize that I was wrong and I am apologizing for being such a hard-headed guy. All I want is for you to be happy and be able to enjoy the holiday season. Nothing brightens the Christmas spirit like Christmas lights! I took the time to hang the lights for you today; and now I will be off to the hockey rink.

Again, I am very sorry for the way I acted yester-day. I'll be home later.

    Love you.

    Hi Honey,

Thank you for that heart-felt apology. I don't often get an apology from you, and I truly appreciate it. I, too, felt bad about the argument and wanted to apologize.

I realize that I can sometimes be a little pushy. I will try to respect your feelings from now on. Thank you for taking the time to hang the Christ-mas lights for me. It really means a lot. In the spirit of giving, I washed your truck for you; and now I am off to the mall.

    I love you too!

    Retirement Planning

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00. With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left. If you had purchased $1000 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, You would have had $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

    It's called the 401-Keg Plan.

Why in this Weird World... .....do they have drive-up ATM machines providing Braille for the blind?

Why, if flying is so safe, do they call the airport the "ter-minal"?

Why isn't there mouse fla-vored cat food?

Why does the man who in-vests your money choose to be called a broker instead of a richer? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, while dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons?

Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

Why are they called apart-ments even though they are all stuck together?

I have seen many remarkable na-ture photographs over the years but this photo of a nesting Falcon in an old tree is perhaps the most re-markable nature shot that I've ever seen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Nature is truly breath-taking! Please send this to most of your older friends, since the younger ones probably have never seen a falcon and wouldn't recognize it.

Honeywell-Garrett Retirees’ Club of Arizona Newsletter Jan 2020 2016

A few months ago a husband and wife who worked for the “Greatest Show On Earth” went to an adoption agency hoping to initiate the process of adopting a child.

Officials at the agency, considering the extensive travel of cir-cus folks, and the education of the prospective child, immedi-ately had doubts as to the couple’s qualifications for adoption, and voiced their concerns to the couple.

The circus duo acknowledged the concerns and immediately produced photos of their 50-foot motor home which was clean, well maintained, and also equipped with a beautiful nursery. The couple also allayed concerns over the adoptee’s education informing the officials that they had already arranged for a full-time professional tutor who would teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin, and technical skills.

Then the officials expressed concerns about the child’s health providers, and it being raised in a circus environment. They were assured by the couple that a nanny had already been placed on retainer and would be available as soon as called. The nanny was a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet.

The staff of the agency was finally satisfied. They asked, "What age child are you hoping to adopt?"

"It doesn't really matter to us, as long as the kid fits in the can-non."

    DEAR ABBY continued:

Dear Abby, I am a twenty-three year old liberated woman who has been on the pill for two years. It's getting expensive and I think my boy-friend should share half the cost, but I don't know him well enough to discuss money with him.
