The spinal column has 26 different bones. 24 of those bones are all vertebrae (7 cervical, 12 Thoracic, and 5 Lumbar vertebrae). The first two vertebrae have special names, C1 is known as atlas and C2 is known as axis. The other two bones are the sacrum and coccyx.

Rib Types • True ribs are named “true ribs” because any

of the seven upper pairs of ribs are attached to the sternum by costal cartilage.

• False ribs are named “false ribs” because any of the five pairs of lower ribs do not articulate directly with the sternum.

• Floating ribs are named “floating ribs” because it is a rib which is attached to the spine, but not the sternum.
