Get wild at Kielder This is a circular walk that takes you from Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, past the Minotaur Maze, over the river to Kielder Salmon Centre and then through woods and meadows. The route between Kielder Castle and the Salmon Centre is on well-surfaced easy access paths, and you can return back the same way. The second half of the walk through the woods and meadow is much wilder, with some steps and steep slopes. Young salmon need fresh-flowing, cold water, with shade and hiding places, such as rocks and overhanging bushes. The Kielder Burn, that you cross twice on this walk, is an ideal habitat. A special trap (below) is used to catch the young salmon (smolts) once they start migrating. They are then released back into the River North Tyne at Falstone, so they can continue their migration towards the North Sea. The Environment Agency's Kielder Salmon Centre rears salmon and other protected species like freshwater pearl mussels. The visitor centre includes an aquarium for native fish, information boards and video explaining the conservation work, a quiz trail, brass rubbings and a chance to uncover a fossil salmon. Check website (on back of leaflet) for seasonal opening times.

Salmon and trout spend the earliest stages of their life here in the upper reaches of the River North Tyne and the mature fish live in the sea. Kielder Dam stops their natural migration. Fish eggs are hatched at the Salmon Centre. The young fish are then transferred upstream to Kielder Burn and across the upper reaches of the River Tyne, as part of conserving this iconic species.

Kielder Salmon CentreA 2½ mile / 4 km circular walk along footpaths and tracks to the Kielder Salmon Centre and smolt trap. Alternative easy access route (1¼ miles /1.8km).

The freshwater pearl mussel is intrinsically linked with the life of the salmon. You can see the mussels living in our specially constructed outdoor display.
