IN THIS ISSUE Peggy O’Hare
October 5, 1943-April 24, 2012
It is with great sadness, I finish writing the May 2012 Issue of the
Howler, for my friend Peggy.
Our dear friend and fellow dog enthusiast, Peggy O’Hare passed
away suddenly on April 24th. She will be missed by many.
Knowing how efficient Peggy was, she had already begun to
work on this May issue. It is with great honor that
I had the privilege to finish it for her.
Peggy’s involvement in our club was significant. Her dedication and
hard work will be very difficult to replace.
There will be a special event on May 28, 2012 beginning at 3:00
p.m. in memory of Peggy. For more information about the
Memorial, turn to page 7 of this newsletter.
Our deepest sympathy to her family and specifically,
her daughter, Cindy O’Hare.

Dog food recalls are vital to maintaining a safe food supply for our pets. They can be conducted in one of three ways… by a pet food company voluntarily, at the specific request of the Food
and Drug Administration or by legal authority.
Recalls are almost always voluntary. Only rarely does the FDA actually request a dog food recall.
Here’s a list of the most recent dog food recalls in the Dog Food Advisor’s database.

HR 835 / S 707 PUPS Bad for dogs, bad for shelters, bad for the economy
WHAT PUPS DOES: Abandons traditional determination between wholesale and retail---so that USDA can regulate home/hobby breeders who don't sell to pet stores. Begins USDA regulation of anyone (with 1 intact female dog over 4 months of age) who sells, places, or adopts out more than 50 dogs in a year ... to start. Could easily be amended down to 10 ... to 2. Takes away your right to privacy in your own home. USDA or their contractors can without notice enter your home and inspect it if they SUSPECT you might meet criteria for regulation. Over-regulates responsible home breeders out of existence. Mandates nonporous floors, kennel sizes, floor drains, and pages of requirements impossible for most home breeders to follow. Forces shelters, and home/hobby breeders to redesign their current facilities in order to meet federal standards. Establishes government controlled exercise standards that are not scientifically proven. Sets precedent with exercise standards for future rigid socialization and breeding standards that would remove owner’s flexibility to use professional judgment based on breed and purpose. Reduces the ability of the American public to obtain healthy privately bred or rescue dogs of their choosing. Places an unfunded mandate on Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and overextends their enforcement ability. Fails to exempt sportsmen, sporting dog trainers, and hunting clubs from being regulated alongside in-home sellers. Adds more federal oversight and regulation into American’s daily lives.

I would especially like to thank Carol for putting together a wonderful obedience and
rally trial. Carol, you did a terrific job. Carol put together a great judging panel at
the last minute. If you have ever tried to hire judges, you know how hard it is to
find anyone available less than a year usually two years in advance! And to find
judges to come out on a holiday weekend is even harder. There are no more holi-
days on that show date for a few years—thank goodness.
Sue Kothe had the other truly difficult task of finding ring-stewards to come out on a
holiday weekend. Finding stewards is difficult on any weekend—but on Easter,
ugh! You did a wonderful job Sue.
Wayne’s roast beef sandwiches served on Saturday were so wonderful, we ran out
of food much earlier than we ever thought possible. People virtually floated in the
lunch-room on the aroma of Wayne’s cooking. Thanks, Wayne.
Thanks too to Nancy for giving up Easter with the family to help out serving food.
Thanks to everyone (and there are many club members I haven’t named) who
worked so hard to make our first spring obedience and rally trials an event the ex-
hibitors loved.
Peggy
A huge “THANK YOU” to all of you for helping to make the April Obedience and
Rally Trials a success! I really appreciate all of the support and help since I didn’t
have a clue what I was doing! Everything appeared to run smoothly, and I didn’t
hear too many complaints (just the normal grumbling you hear at any trial!).
Wayne did an outstanding job with the food – who would have predicted so many
people would have wanted to eat on Sat.! (I still want the chocolate chip cookie rec-
ipe, Wayne!) And thanks to Peggy, Nancy, Tim, and Brianna for helping out in the
kitchen!
Sue and Glen: Total Recall looked great and several people commented on how much
they like to show there!
I know how tough it is to get people to commit to volunteer to steward, Sue. You
did very well considering it was a holiday weekend – next year should be easier!
Thanks for coming early, Cheryl. I know the judges appreciated getting their
checks before they left.
Thanks again to everyone!
Carol
