Excellent Attendance! Being in school every day means your child won’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If he asks to stay home “just because,” remind him of what he’ll miss, such as his reading group or PE class. Explain that he can be absent only if he’s sick or if there’s a family emergency.

Did you know? Children who regular ly eat meals with their families tend to do better in school and avoid risky behavior. Eating dinner together is great, but other meals count, too. If you work at night, maybe you could make time for a family breakfast. Or on a weekend, try a picnic lunch.

By teaching your children healthy eating habits, and modeling these behaviors in yourself, you can help your children maintain a healthy weight and normal growth. Some of the most important aspects of healthy eating are portion control and cutting down on how much fat and sugar your child eats or drinks. Simple ways to reduce fat intake in your child's diet and promote a healthy weight include serving:

Low-fat or nonfat dairy products

Poultry without skin

Lean cuts of meats

Whole grain breads and cereals

Healthy snacks such as fruit and veggies

It’s important for your children to pick up these good eating habits when they are young. This will set a good foundation for them as they transition into adulthood.

On Tuesday March 5, 2019 sixth grader Paige Morrone rep-resented OESJ Elementary School at the Regional Spelling Bee at Proctor's Theater in Schenectady, NY. Her day be-gan with a grueling 25 question spelling test and 25 ques-tion vocabulary test. After a short break and lunch, Paige took her place on the stage. She was one of 114 students competing. Paige spelled her word correctly in Round 1 and Round 2. At the end of Round 2 there were only 78

spellers left. While she did not make it into the top 25, we don't have to B-R-A-B-B-L-E that she is super I-N-T-E-L-L-I-G-E-N-T. We are very proud of her ac-complishments! OESJ is honored to have such a tremendously talented

student to represent them.

What does respect look like? Your youngster’s daily dealings with adults and kids alike will be more pleasant if he speaks and acts respectfully. Try these tips for helping him learn about respect. Respectful replies. Think about something that you and your youngster disagree on (say, whether his video game time should be limited). Model having a respectful discussion about it. You might say that his brain and body are growing and that he needs to run and play to stay healthy. Then, suggest a respectful response, such as, “I want to be healthy, but I love video games.” Have him brainstorm other situa-tions where people have different opinions but still speak to each other with respect. Everyday acts. When you mow the lawn or clean up after your dog, you can teach your child about respect for neighbors. Ex-plain that keeping your neighbor-hood clean and neat makes it nice for everyone. Ask him to think of other respectful things neighbors should do. If you share an apart-ment laundry room, he might say that you respect neighbors’ tie by removing your clothes when they’re done so others get to use the washers and dryers.

It sure does take some time to make a mosaic tile style art project, but Myles sure is hav-ing a good time. Throughout centu-ries, a mosaic is a decorative design or work of art made up of small materials like stone or glass. They are placed to create a pattern or image. Not only are mo-saics popular in the art room, they are also used to decorate homes, buildings and offices. Here we are using small pieces of paper glued down to make a cool looking tree.

Birds of a feather create art to-gether. Second grade students learned what it is to create using materials from the art room and materials that can be found in na-ture. This form art mixed media art uses markers, crayons, drawing paper and feathers from our friends that fly around us. Even though these feather were pur-chased, you can look all around you and find materials in nature that can be used to make some great art.

.Strong study habits Q: My third grader has to spend more time studying this year . How can I make sure he/she studies effectively? A: Set you child up for success by helping her find a distraction-free study spot. Also, have her come up with a study routine. For instance, she could reserve time each evening to review her textbook and notes in the days leading up to a test. Also, many students find it helpful to jot down a purpose each time they study. Your child might write: “I will learn the definitions of all the boldfaced words in chapter 7, section 1.” Finally, encourage her to experiment with study strategies to find what works best. She could close her eyes and im-agine how a word is spelled or draw a grid with 9 squares to solve 3x3. Or she might find it helpful to spell or recite math facts aloud in rhythm or to a familiar tune.

Agriculture Literacy week was March 18th through the 22nd. The second graders at OESJ had a few special guests come to visit and read to them! Finn the rabbit and Henny the chicken joined Mrs. Littrell to read On the Farm, To the Market by G. Brian Karas. Mrs. Littrell works at the Department of Agriculture and Markets. Her family also operates a dairy farm in St. Johnsville. During her time with the second graders, Mrs. Littrell taught the students about where our food comes from, the process of getting products to the farmer's market, and responsibilities living and working on the farm.

Please remind children to wash their hands before they eat, after they use the bathroom and whenever their hands get dirty. Please include in the reminder that they need to use soap and water and rub their hands together (the back of their hands too) for 20 seconds. Have them sing the "ABC Song" to themselves or "Happy Birthday", which takes approximately 20 seconds. Please remind children to use a tissue or cough/sneeze into their sleeve. Coughing and sneezing into a tissue or their sleeve will help keep their hands free of germs. If your child should become ill, please keep them home from school with a fever. Your child needs to be fever free for 24 hours before they are able to return to school. When your child is prescribed an antibiotic for an illness, they need to be on the antibi-otic for at least 24 hours before returning to school. When your child is vomiting, please keep them home for 24 hours. Your child may feel better, but giving them time to rest and hydrate is important for their health. Finally, it is important for children to keep hydrated. Encourage them to drink water during the day to help keep them healthy!

After several cancellations due to weather, students were finally able to get on the slopes! Everyone that participat-ed in ski club had a great time! We can’t wait until next year!!!

Another great year for OESJ Elementary OESJ Elementary had three teams compete this year in the Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition on March 9, 2018. Teams combined their skills, creativity & out of the box thinking. They made the props & costumes with no outside assistance. It was quite a commitment for these children & coaches. Teams had to perform an 8 Minute skit of their long-term problem, which was judged on style, creativity & origi-nality. They also had to respond to a spontaneous problem. The team members that completed Problem 3, Division II “The Classics: Leonardo’s Workshop” included Madeline Sammons-Wilbur, Rachel Young, Andrea Thayer, Jackson Polidori & Olivia Wilmot coached by Joanne Young & Lorri Sammons-Wilbur. Great job team! The team members that completed Problem 3, Division I “The Classics: Leonardo’s Workshop” included Donald Cavanaugh, Kellan Her-ringshaw, Kaleb Smith, Logan VanValkenburgh & Audrina Polidori. This team was coached by Lorraine Van Alystyne & Kayla VanValken-burgh. The team took 1st place at the Regional Competition and contin-ued on to the State Competition on March 23rd in Binghamton. The third team that competed representing OESJ Elementary completed Problem 2, Division I “Hide in Plain Site.” The team included Myles Hayes, Henry Schoff, Ava Murray, Devin Schell, Kayleigh Araujo & Kaylee Heroth and was coached by Nicole Murray, Abbey Schoff & Lisa Hayes. This team placed 2nd & 1st Via Lottery at the Regional Com-petition and took 3rd place at the State Competition in Binghamton. Congratulations to all three teams that competed this year.
