A message from Matt Renna, Vice President, Human Resources
Dear faculty and staff,
Higher education is facing challenging times making it more important than ever that
Human Resources successfully engage our workforce, to create an amazing culture
where our faculty and staff feel recognized, empowered and rewarded. In 2019, for
the first time in more than 10 years, we announced there will be reduced healthcare
premiums for 2020. The University implemented a merit salary increase effective
January 1st. These initiatives are easily recognizable by the impact you may have
felt in your paycheck. What might not be as recognizable to everyone is the
investment we’re making in you in other ways. We implemented a recruitment policy
that provides internal employment opportunities for existing talent. We expanded
Staff Development Day to include faculty, renaming it “Employee Development
Day.” We’re continuing to create development opportunities through our leadership
and management development programs. We said “thank you” to our faculty and
staff through our employee recognition ceremonies which broke attendance records.
Currently, we’re also focused on growing a robust university-wide health and
wellness program to support the work and personal lives of faculty and staff in their
efforts to be more productive members of a vibrant university community. We’re
proud of what we’ve accomplished in 2019 as a division and the positive impact
we've had, and we're looking forward to continuing our progress in 2020.

Benefits and Compensation Information and Updates
For calendar year 2019, Preventive Care exams must have been completed
between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019. The completed Preventive Care
Incentive Program Payment Form (and corresponding Cigna Explanation of Benefits)
is due no later than February 28, 2020. Payment will be made, all at one time, on
March 31, 2020. You must be actively employed, full-time, on March 31 to be eligible
for this payment (unless you retire as a qualified retiree during the plan year).
Effective December 31, 2019, the New York State minimum wage for
Westchester increased to $13.00 per hour. The University has acted to be in
compliance with this rate for all hourly paid employees on the Westchester
campuses. The rates have been automatically updated. As hourly employees are on
a one pay period lag, this change impacted the January 31, 2020 payroll. If you have
any questions about this change or how your student and part-time staff employees
were/will be affected, please reach out to Ann Heitmann at [email protected] or
Beth Buls at [email protected].
FY2020 PMDP Mid-Year Check-In
As part of Pace University’s Performance Management and Development Process
(PMDP), an FY2020 mid-year discussion between each staff member and their
supervisor is recommended. This mid-year check-in provides an opportunity for
supervisors and staff members to discuss progress on goals and for supervisors to
provide feedback on performance to date.
The mid-year performance check-in includes an electronic acknowledgement of the
performance discussion between the supervisor and employee. This is done through
the PMDP system and will be submitted to Human Resources.
Access a quick online training video explaining the mid-year check-in performance
discussion, including navigational instructions to indicate completion of the process in
the PMDP system.
The mid-year check-in should be completed by February 28, 2020.
2019 Employee Recognition Ceremonies
Each year, Human Resources coordinates the Employee Recognition Ceremonies
on the Law School, New York and Pleasantville campuses to recognize those
employees who have earned a special award or are being recognized for years of
service.
Due to snow closure, the Law School ceremony is being rescheduled to
Thursday, March 5, from 3:30pm-5:00pm, in the Tudor Room.
In 2019, Harold Brown, Linda Quest, George Pappas and George Zimmar were each
recognized for 50 years of service and Nicholas Catalano was recognized for 55
years of service! Congratulations!
The recognition ceremonies are followed by receptions, making it the perfect
opportunity to join in the festivities with colleagues. A fun time was had by all who
attended!
Setting the Pace Management Development Program

representatives of Management Council.
Congratulations to the 2019 Cohort that graduated on January 23, 2020!
Welcome to the 2020 Setting the Pace cohort that was selected in December 2019!
Employee Development Days
This year Talent Development offered two Employee Development Days – one on
the NYC campus on October 4th and one on the Pleasantville campus on November
15th! The decision to hold the event on both campuses was the result of employees’
feedback.
Both dates of the Employee Development Day were a success, with 253 students,
faculty and staff members attending more than 35 programs (up from 29 the year
before!) with 41 standalone sessions. Overall satisfaction rate for the events was 4.5
out of 5. Special thanks to all the presenters, participants, and the Human
Resources Talent Development team! Programs offered included Courageous
Conversations on Race and Diversity, Active Shooter Training, Smart Storytelling
through Social Media, Sustainability Ambassador Workshop, Tips and Tricks in MS
PowerPoint, Stop the Yawns: Crush your next Presentation with Storytelling, Key
Skills for Successful Mentors, and many more!
Beginning this year, Employee Development Day will be on alternating campuses
each year. The NYC Employee Development Day is tentatively scheduled to be in
November 2020 (date TBD). Westchester Employee Development Day will take
place the following year, tentatively scheduled for June 2021 (date TBD).

Health and Wellness Scavenger Hunt – Pleasantville
November 2019
Written by Vanessa Hall
Special Events Coordinator, Westchester
I had so much fun looking for the scavenger hunt objects! I usually take time to walk
the campus, but this time it was with a specific purpose. While looking for the objects,
I encountered and came upon things that I had glanced over and didn’t pay much
attention to. But this time I was aware of my surroundings more than the last.
I started the scavenger hunt with the easy objects - Parking Lot D, Costello House,
Pace clock – and then I had to think a little harder. I remembered seeing a phone on
the outside of a building. Ahh…yes! The Willcox Hall building. Bingo! Then the
poodle. That must be a sorority symbol. Yup! Got it! By the way, there’s a phone
located on the outside of Choate House.
I headed over to the Environmental Center area looking for the Cheever Nature Trail
sign. That was pretty easy. I thought the moss covered stone bench must be on the
nature trail somewhere. Wrong! At the end of the trail I see this huge pond that I
didn’t realize was there. I had glanced over the garden from a distance in my past
walks, but there it was right in front of me! I saw a student volunteering in the garden
and decided to introduce myself.
Then on to look for the last two objects. That darn moss covered stone bench and
the iron dragon. As I’m heading up the hill to the OSA building I hear rustling in the
brush. I look and there’s this HUGE deer prancing along in the same direction as I!
What a beautiful sight! I’m thinking, “that must be a good sign.” I’m headed in the
right direction to find this moss-covered stone bench. Wrong again. But I did find the
iron dragon sitting high atop the entrance of the OSA building.
Whew! Seven down, one to go. That moss-covered stone bench! Where could it be?
Hmmm. There’s one section of the campus I didn’t explore on my scavenger hunt, so
I head in that direction. Up another hill! Here I go!
I reach the top of the hill where the Goldstein Acadmeic building is, along with the Art
Barn, and Buschbaum. I think I see what is a stone bench sitting on top of this small
hill and head in that direction. THERE IT IS!! Mission accomplished!!!
As I head back to my office, I ponder the benefits of such a walk. Walking not only
burns calories, but it strengthens the heart, boosts your energy, tones your legs, and
improves your mood. Think about it! Don’t you feel GREAT after a good walk? And
what about all the creative juices that were flowing while you were walking? You can
answer questions that were on your mind, solve that mystery that had you off kilter,
and enjoy your surroundings all the while exercising. I will walk as long as I am
able…it’s one of the free gyms of the world!

The Great American Smokeout – Thursday, November 21, 2019
The Health and Wellness Committee represented at the Employee Recognition
Ceremonies in November, promoting the Great American Smokeout, with smoking
cessation kits and other wellness information and raffles.
Survey Says…
The Health and Wellness Committee members wanted to know how the Committee
could be most impactful, and had surveys at the Employee Development Days, and
staff and faculty council meetings. Participants who completed a survey received a
Pace Yourself to Wellness cooler or water bottle! About 300 surveys were completed
by staff and faculty! The Committee will respond to what times work best for onsite
programs, preferred method of participation, and will address barriers to participation.

Student Employee Spotlight
Student employees are hired University-wide and the goal of the University is to
encourage students to understand that the tasks and duties assigned to them will
give them a small glimpse into the outside work world. More often than not, we will
have students that go above and beyond the expectations of their
team/departments.
Mark, known as Marcus by his friends, has joined the NYC Talent Acquisition team
as a student worker. He is originally from a small town in Texas but decided to attend
Pace University to pursue a masters' degree in human resource management. Mark
is also a veteran in the U.S Navy Reserves as a second class Yeoman. He has been
in the U.S Navy for a total of 4 years (active duty) and has 3 years as a reservist.
After graduation, Mark would like to pursue a profession in the HR international field,
which would combine his passion for helping people as well as traveling and seeing
the world.
If you have a student worker you would like us to showcase in our student employee
spotlight segment, please email us at: [email protected]. We would like to inform
the University community about all the wonderful students we have working on
campus.
