Summary

Incumbents in the Teacher, Early Childhood II position provide a stimulating, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment where children have the ability to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Teacher, Early Childhood II is distinguished from the Teacher, Early Childhood I in that incumbents in the II level train, mentor, and supervise other teaching staff and university students.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Teacher, Early Childhood II reports to a Principal. This classification trains, mentors, and supervises other teaching staff, university students, or child care providers.

Typical Functions

1. Facilitates an effective program to meet the physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive needs of each child based upon sound child development principles.

2. Secures the health, safety, welfare, and accountability of children through constant supervision, effective arrangement of space, proper maintenance of equipment, and regular practice of fire and other emergency procedures.

3. Ensures that families receive adequate information about their child’s experiences at the center through daily contacts, information letters, and regularly scheduled teacher/family conferences.

4. Conducts ongoing needs assessment of each child and maintains written records and portfolios to monitor progress in all areas of development and for incorporating into curriculum planning.

5. Plans and prepares for, outside of classroom time, individualized and developmentally appropriate materials, activities and experiences required to implement an integrated thematic/project approach curriculum and establishes daily routines conducive to the optimal growth and development of children.

6. Maintains the learning environment of all classroom areas and outdoor play areas.7. Trains and supervises practicum students in such a way that each is actively engaged in meeting

the individual needs of each child in all developmental domains.

8. Attends and actively contributes to staff planning, training, evaluations meetings, and professional events, serving as a resource person to staff members.

9. Acknowledges and acts in accordance with the policies and procedures of the center and the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

10. Operates a classroom/program in compliance with all state childcare center licensing standards and NAEYC accreditation criteria.

11. Shares in the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the center and performs other duties, assigned by the Director, deemed necessary for the successful operation of the center program.

12. Supervises, mentors, and trains other teaching staff and university students.13. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

2. Records maintenance skills.3. Knowledge of early childhood education programs and techniques.4. Knowledge of child development theory and practice.5. Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies.6. Ability to provide activities for children that encourage healthy growth.7. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Human Development, or related field.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and pushing or pulling of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds). Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. May involve exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, bodily fluids, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
