Cells A cell is a tiny unit of living matter inside a membrane. They are the smallest units of life and all living things contain them. A unicellular organism, sometimes known as a single-celled organism, is very simple and consist of only one cell. Amoeba and bacteria are examples of unicellular organisms. A multicellular organisms, is a living thing that is made up of many cells. All plants and animals, including humans, are multicellular organisms. The cells in these living things are specialised which means they each have their own jobs. Cells: •  use energy •  are made of moving parts •  grow •  repair damage done to them •  divide or split •  die ©  A  Moment  In  Our  World

Cells The main parts of a Cell

Cell Membrane – The outside covering of a cell. Nucleus – The control centre of the cell. DNA – Special information that helps the cell to reproduce itself. They can be found in the nucleus. The 23 pairs of DNA, can be found in the nucleus. Lysosomes – Breaks down the unneeded parts of the cell. Cytoplasm – This is where most of the cell work takes place. Mitochondria – Also known as the power supply for the cell. It turns the food we eat into energy for the cell.

All living things are made of cells.

Cells come together to form tissues.

Tissues come together to form organs.

Organs come together to form organ systems.

Organ systems come together to form whole organisms.

Tissues There are four main types of tissues in your body. 1.  The epithelial tissue 2.  The connective tissue 3.  The muscle tissue 4.  The nerve tissue

The epithelial tissue is made from layers of cells. They cover, protect and separate the surfaces of your major organs like your skin and breathing airways, from the environment around it. The connective tissue holds other tissues together. It gives structure to your body and can be found in blood and tendons. The muscle tissue allows your body to move by changing its size. It does this by contracting and flexing. Skeletal muscle tissue lets your bones move, while you cardiac muscle tissue in your heart helps it to pump blood through your body. The nerve tissue are contained in your central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, so can be found in your brain and spinal cord. This tissue carries messages through the body.
