HUTTOFT PRIMARY SCHOOL (Academy)
AUTUMN TERM CURRICULUM
YEAR 5 LITERACY
Reading – four daily lesson of 35 – 40 minutes Novels, stories, poems, playscripts, accounts, reports, instructional texts. Written and oral comprehension work. Weekly access to the school library. Small group reading activities i.e., Guided Reading. Class stories – The Naming of William Rutherford and Journey to Jo’Burg. This term we are focusing on quiet reading to develop stamina and the opportunity for children to immerse themselves in a book! There will also be a minimum of two sessions per week for everyone to enjoy hearing a class story read by the teacher. We aim to develop reading stamina and enjoyment in reading
Extended Writing – weekly lesson approximately 90 minutes writing for a range of purposes
Handwriting – approximately 20 minutes per week regular practising of ‘joined up’ writing. Fluent, consistently joined up writing will be considered by Mrs. Hurrell for progression to writing in pen
Speaking and Listening – approximately 15 minutes per week weekly activity – the theme is ‘A New Greek God’. Drama – weekly 25 minute lesson to develop communication, organisation and presentation skills with an emphasis on the use of Standard English
Spellings – approximately 30 minutes per week weekly list tested on Fridays, High Frequency Words and the teaching of spelling patterns and rules including homophones and ‘-cious’/’-tious’ and ‘-cial’/’-tial’ words
Grammar and Punctuation – 30 minutes per week
This term our work includes prefixes, modal verbs, determiners, commas, direct and reported speech and conjunctions.
MATHS – daily lesson of 45 - 50 minutes
Year 5 programme of study includes:
o Number (place value, four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages)
o Measure (working with real life problems – scales, money, time etc, approximate conversions – metric and imperial)
o Geometry – properties and classification of shapes
There is a weekly Mental Arithmetic test and a focused session to develop mental arithmetic skills. SCIENCE – one weekly lesson of 90 minutes
Through the two topics – Earth and Space and Properties and Changes of Materials – children will be taught to use scientific vocabulary, plan and carry out investigations and write conclusions about what they have learned. They will be encouraged to discuss scientific developments and how these affect them and to use their maths and IT skills. Whole School Investigation Week takes place after half term. RE – weekly lesson of 50 - 60 minutes

The Ancient Greeks GEOGRAPHY – weekly lesson of 55 – 60 minutes

Russia MFL (French) – approximately 35 minutes per week
Greeting people, asking and talking about families
School subjects, likes and dislikes
Writing (in French)
PSHE – weekly lesson of 25 minutes
Themes including kindness, anti-bullying and keeping safe
BRITISHNESS: Fundamental British Values (FBV) are promoted in many ways throughout the school and forms an integral part of the school’s approach to our pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC). PE – 180 minutes per week Monday Dance Wednesday Gym Thursday Hockey Friday Swimming and Athletics
Plimsolls and PE kit should be in School everyday
PE kit includes the school’s black sweatshirt and jogging bottoms
Trainers are essential for outdoor lessons
Spare socks are needed when tights are worn as tights should not be worn for PE
ART and DESIGN – 75 - 80 minutes per week
Colour mixing and painting techniques, Art from other cultures including Batik, printing, the Natural World, use of ICT, seasonal work, observational drawings, clay coil pots, embroidery, Van Gogh MUSIC – 40 minutes per week
BBC Materials Singing Session COOKERY – 95 minutes per week in the second half of the term
Food preparation, hygiene and cookery activities in the classroom and/or Servery. Home Learning:
Maths Activity to share with the family - issued on Tuesday for return by Thursday morning
Spelling list - issued Friday for a test the following Friday
Writing spelling sentences to practise the new spellings on A4 paper and return by Monday morning
