RABBI'S CORNER

Passover comes at the very best time of year in Indiana. The winter (such as it is) has past and our thoughts turn to the budding greenery, the blossoming earth, and the warmth of spring. Nature is filled with renewal, and with the birds return we feel ourselves longing to join them in song.

The holiday is also a perennial favorite for Jews of all ages. Children are

engaged in festivities and fun around the table, while adults grapple with important questions raised by the text of the Hagaddah. Why did the Israelites remain enslaved until Moses came along? What did God need to prove by allowing the Israelites, and the Egyptians to suffer through punishments and plagues? And in what ways might we be complicit in continuing narratives of slavery in the modern world—what is our responsibility?

Even those of us who abbreviate the traditional Seder are likely to encounter one very special line. The ancient rabbis declared, “B’chol dor vador… In every generation, every one of us is obligated to see themselves… ki ilu… as if… we had personally been freed from Egypt.” The experience of the Seder is supposed to help us feel personally involved, as if/ like we were there. The Seder is high drama, theatrical by design. We lean on pillows, we luxuriate with four toasts and multiple courses; we ingest bitterness and sweetness in the same meal—to try to travel through time, as if we could; to arrive at the Exodus.

“Ki ilu—as if” This small phrase reminds us of the promise of this night. It would impossible to transport ourselves to ancient times, but the story demands that we try anyways, as if it were possible. The Exodus did not happen in history, its thread is

woven through our own lives. Slavery is not only the shackles of forced labor in ancient Egypt: it is racial and social and economic inequality, legalized discrimination, and sometimes literal slavery in the twenty first century. And the Jewish people, those who experienced the Exodus, and who relive it each and every year, see these realities with a greater sensitivity, and a greater sense of responsibility.

There will always be Pharaoh, and there will always be the need for a Miriam and a Moses to lead our people and speak truth to power. The questions we ask around our tables, especially at our Congregational Second Night Seder (April 11th at 5:30pm) will inspire us to fulfilling answers. Why did the Israelites remain enslaved until Moses came along? Because each of us is enslaved, even today. What did God need to prove? That slavery is not easily eradicated. It takes a moment to get the Israelites out of Egypt, but it takes generations to get the Egypt out of the Israelites.

Our congregation is engaged the most important conversations happening in Indiana right now. What does it mean to be a welcoming, inclusive community? How do we treat those without proper legal documentation? How far are we willing to extend to women the same basic rights to health care that men enjoy? How are we caring for the 30% of Indiana’s children who live each day with food insecurity? Are we somehow responsible for continued forms of slavery in our city, our country, our world? The questions of the Hagaddah have never felt more relevant. We, ourselves, experienced liberation, and that history should make us feel these questions more acutely. Let us join one another around the Seder table to envision better solutions, and to act as if they were possible.

4 IHC KULANU • APRIL 2017 www.ihcindy.org

As I approach retirement and to honor my history with IHC, I share this article from the April 4, 1980 Bulletin. ~ Cantor Janice Roger

According to our tradition, on the Sabbath during Passover the Song of Songs is read. In that book is the phrase, “et hazamir higiya, the time of singing has come.” Of the three Pilgrimage Festivals—Sukkot, Passover and

Shavuot—Passover is by far the most musically interesting. There is a special festival nussach (melodic pattern) which serves for all three festivals, but on Passover we have the seder which provides numerous texts and songs to chant and sing.

The seder is considered not only a commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt, but also a teaching session. We know this from the Haggadah, which tells us, “. . . even if all of us were wise and well-versed in the Torah, it would still be our duty from year to year to tell the story of the deliverance from Egypt. Indeed, to dwell on it at length is considered praiseworthy.” However, even though Jews of all ages are required to study the Passover story, many sections of the Haggadah are geared to children. Right at the start are Four Questions to be asked by the youngest child. This question and answer format appears later in the seder as well.

The seder is a modern educator’s dream. It provides a variety of media for the participants. Think about it. Audio-visual

experiences abound: a plate with things to smell, touch and taste, a variety of ritual objects to see, songs to sing. Given that, plus the telling of an adventure story par excellence, ensures that the deliverance of our people from Egypt will not soon be forgotten. An interesting sidelight, too, is that sociologists have discovered the Passover seder to be the most celebrated of all Jewish rituals.

Besides its part in the seder ritual, the exodus story has inspired major works of art music—pieces composed for the concert hall. The oldest of these is “Israel in Egypt” by Georg Frideric Handel. Handel took Jewish historical episodes and composed works around them—Judas Maccabeus, Saul, Joshua and Esther, to name a few. These oratorios would not be considered Jewish music either in style (which was Baroque in the finest sense) or intent (they were written for the English concert-going public) but point to an 18th Century interest in classical literature.

In the 20th Century, Arnold Schoenberg composed Moses and Aron, for which he wrote his own libretto reflecting a personal interpretation of the biblical narrative. A ballet suite by Darius Milhaud, Opus Americanum No. 2—Moses, is a musical interpretation of Moses’ life. Newer musical settings of the Exodus combined with the seder theme are “Cantata of Bitter Herbs” by Ernst Toch, and “Haggadah” by Paul Dessau.

Passover has unleashed the musical imaginations of many. From the familiar “Dayenu” to the twelve-tone Moses and Aron, we have all levels of music. Passover truly fulfills the phrase in Song of Songs: “et hazamir higiya.”

Last call for books to be returned in order to to earn credit in the Religious School-Temple Library sponsored reading incentive program: Help Scooby Solve the Great Jewish Book Mystery! Be certain to bring back books with completed “Help Scooby” cards in the book pockets by Sunday, April 23, 2017. The library is open during the week so, if you have any time during school vacations this month, do visit and borrow books! Contact the librarian with your questions about the program. We want to be certain that all children have the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile endeavor.Wondering when Religious School students are scheduled to come to the library? In April, Storytelling Sundays will take place on:

April 23 Kindergarten and Fourth GradesApril 30 Third GradeIf your children bring home books to read on either Sunday, those books should be returned by May 7, 2017, the last day of school for the 2016-2017 program year. We appreciate your help.

WHAT’S NEWWhenever possible, I try to find some interesting trivia to offer at our Passover family seders. Last year, we discovered fascinating notations in a children’s book, Passover Around the World, by Tami Lehman-Wilzig. In addition to containing accounts of how Passover is celebrated in the United States and Israel, there are sections on Ethiopia, Gibraltar, India, Iran, Morocco and Turkey. At the end, short descriptions of customs in other parts of the world are provided. Our family liked the Moroccan custom of the leader placing the seder plate over each person’s head and saying

that now the person is free. We also talked about the Eastern European tradition of dipping a finger in wine while reciting the Ten Plagues. When I was a child, we dipped in water (no stains on the tablecloth!).Interestingly, there is an Egyptian family tradition to tie a piece of matzah in a napkin sack, pass the sack around so each attendee can put it on the right shoulder and when the leader inquires where the person is from, the response is “Egypt.” When the leader asks where the person is going, the sack is put on the left shoulder, and the answer is “Jerusalem.”

Regardless of how you celebrate, there always is something new to learn each year. What better way to do so than to read about Passover in the many books at your Temple Library? For children, there is an entire shelf filled with Passover books. For adults there are various Haggadot as well as books on rituals and customs. And, of course, there are the cookbooks, many specifically devoted to Passover meals. This year, you and I may want to look at 1001 Questions and Answers on Pesach, by Jeffrey M. Cohen (Call number 243.2). It is sure to pique our curiosity.Hag Sameach!

I want to start this month by thanking Taylor Guba and Emma Nisonson for the time and commitment they have made to the NFTY-OV region while serving on the board over the past year. I know they will continue to serve the Jewish community, wherever they end up.

I look forward to learning who from IHC will serve on the regional board for the 2017-2018 school year. We will share the exciting news with you when we return from Spring Kallah at HUC-JIR Cincinnati.

With Religious School closed the first few weeks of April, our Youth Group programs will help us finish the slow month with a bang.

Looking ahead, there will be an IFTY led service on Friday evening May 5. That evening we will recognize all seniors graduating from high school. Please let me know if your senior will be able to join us.

VOLUNTEER AT ROBERTS PARK SOUP KITCHEN! On Sunday, April 16, a team of IHC volunteers will serve Easter lunch at the Roberts Park United Methodist Church’s Soup Kitchen for the second year. The Roberts Park soup kitchen, called Soup’s On!, is in its second decade of service to our community. The ministry serves a warm meal and warm hospitality to the hungry and homeless in Indianapolis. Roughly 225 meals are served each week in a friendly, caring environment in which the guests are welcomed and respected. The guests are able to meet and converse with their friends and leave nourished in more ways than just with a meal. IHC has organized a team of approximately 15 volunteers who will serve lunch, talk with the guests and clean up after lunch. Being a Soup's On Volunteer provides our congregants with the opportunity to help someone who is less fortunate and also to support volunteers from congregations who are observing Easter.

SHALOM CHAVERIM!Pesach is my favorite Jewish holiday. Even though I struggle to prepare like all of us do, some years with more success than others, it remains my favorite time of year. Each day requires thought and planning at a level that the rest of the year does not. Shopping, choosing and preparing appropriate foods, arguing with my kids and explaining about what they can and cannot eat, and joking with everyone about the effects of matzah. Most importantly, bringing mindfulness to the smallest part of each day reminds me of all the different rhythms in my life—and our lives—as Jews, Americans, parents, children, siblings, and families.

The seder is an opportunity to explore the core statement of Passover: Avadim Hayyinu-Once we were slaves, now we are free.

Each ritual, prayer, reading, and symbolic food is designed to help us reflect on our freedom. It is in many ways, a ‘perfect’ lesson plan—with something for every learning style.

No matter how excellent a lesson plan may be—what makes it successful is the teachers’ ability to create a connection between the information and the learner. That is where each and every one of us plays our unique role.

Ask yourself (go ahead, I’ll wait): What is my FAVORITE part of the Seder? Once you have your answer, consider:

1. Why do I like it so much? 2. How can I help other people at the table enjoy

it as much as I do?This is what each and every one of us can bring to the Seder - our own unique contribution—to help make the transition to wearing our ancestors’ sandals; both for us, and for everyone around the table.Ziesen Pesach, A Sweet PassoverJed Filler, Director of Lifelong Learning

SISTERHOODKaren Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected]

OUR MISSIONTo join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community and ourselves.

Ah, the winter has past and Spring fills our thoughts. Women's Seder has only barely faded and now we look forward to our family and community seders coming soon!

April is the month that we celebrate Cantor Janice Roger and all that she means to us individually and as a community. Cantor Roger is a long-time Sisterhood member and supporter. She conducts the Women's Seder, provides music for our Sisterhood Shabbatot, and is at the heart of the Mitzvah Stitchers. Sisterhood has been enriched by Cantor Roger's contributions! And we will celebrate those contributions at our May General Membership Meeting.

At IHC, we have been in party mode for two years—anniversaries, retirements, and new arrivals being celebrated throughout. Now we are looking forward to Sisterhood's Centennial in the Fall! This Spring and Summer we will be looking back at our Sisterhood history. We would like to collect your memories related to Sisterhood—either as a member of Sisterhood or a member of the Temple. Be on the lookout for small group meetings to recollect and connect as we celebrate IHC Temple Sisterhood!

BROTHERHOOD Joel Lisker, Brotherhood President; [email protected]

On March 2, IHC Brotherhood competed with Beth Shalom Brotherhood in an evening of bowling fun. A great time was had by all. Big thanks for Doug Waldman for organizing! Stay tuned for future pin action.April 27-30, IHC Brotherhood will head to GUCI for the weekend to help prepare for the upcoming camp season! We have eight slots open. Volunteers are invited to stay at camp the whole time, but participation in the full weekend is not mandatory to sign up. Past participants have boasted about the fellowship opportunities that this weekend fosters! Thanks to Neil Ginsberg for organizing all the activities. If you are not a member of Brotherhood yet, we would love for you to join us! If you are already a member, consider moving up to the mench level. The money we raise through Brotherhood membership helps support GUCI camp scholarships, Tot Shabbat, the computer lab at the Religious school, IFTY, education scholarships and many other IHC activities and programs.Robert Baker, Brotherhood Secretary
