    TheIITMadrasResearchParkfacilitatesresearchanddevelopmentbytheinstituteinpartnershipwithindustry,assisting thegrowthofnew ventures,andpromotingeconomicdevelopment.Patentsarerecognizedasanessentialpartofpromotingeconomicdevelopmentthroughinnovation.Filingpatents

    isanessentialfirststepforinnovators,andmustbedonepriortopublication.Welldraftedpatentsarebehindthesuccessofeverysuccessfulnewventure.Maxvalisacompanyinvolvedinhelpingcompaniesmaximize the value of their inventions through patent related services and is partneringwith IITMadrasResearchParktowardtheircommonobjectives.

    Patentshavebecomeanimportantassetclassforcompanies,sometimesyieldingmorerevenuesfrom

    licensing the patents than sale of products. Judgments in patent infringement suits have awarded

    damagesworth billions ofUS $ thatUniversities have gotten in the act of patenting, licensing and

    sometimesenforcingtheirpatents. TheCohenBoyerpatents,whicharefundamentalpatentscovering

    recombinant DNA technologies formed the basis for Genentech and have earnedmore than $500

    million. USuniversitiescurrentlyreapcloseto$2billiondollarsinlicensingrevenuesannually.

    Thisworkshopwill introducepatents, patenting, and discuss approaches tomonetizingpatents. The

    event is freeandopen toparticipants from IITMadrasResearchParkand facultyand studentsof IIT

    Madras.Otherswillbeaccommodatedonspecialrequest,ifspaceisavailable.

    D. Bommi Bommannan is the founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board of MaxVal Group, Inc. Bommi

    founded MaxVal in 2003 to maximize the value of patents, particularly in the life sciences arena.

    Before founding MaxVal, Bommi was associated with Menlo Ventures, where he established a

    medical device incubator. At the incubator, he cofounded two medical device companies and was

    the CEO of one of them, NTERO Surgical, Inc., until 2002.

    Through MaxVal, Bommi develops and implements patent portfolio management strategies for

    various companies. His Indian subsidiary MaxValIP, develops sophisticated software tools for

    patent data analysis and mining.

    Bommis work experience includes research and management positions at Merck, Cygnus, and Alza.He is an inventor on more than 20 patents and has published more than 50 articles in scientific

    journals. He received his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from a joint program between UCSF and UC,

    Berkeley, his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from A.C. Tech., Anna University

    (Chennai, India) and his law degree (JD) from Stanford Law School (order of the coif). He is aegistered patent attorney (USPTO and California).r

    Profile of Dr. V. S

    V. Shankar is Vice President, MaxvalIP Limited. He has been with Maxval since 2006 in patent

    searching, patent drafting and analysis in the area of medical devices. Currently he leads several

    initiatives in the areas of exploring new business opportunities, establishing resource competence,

    quality management systems and planning, apart from patent drafting and filing in India.

    Prior to Maxval, Shankar has 20 years of experience in materials and engineering research at Indira

    Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, at least eight of which have been in technology

    development. He received his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Madras for work done at

    the Indira Gandhi Centre, in 2001. He has a masters degree in Materials Science & Engineering

    from Oregon Graduate Institute (USA) and a bachelors degree in Metallurgical Engineering from

    National Institute ofTechnology,Tiruchirappalli.HeisaregisteredIndianPatentAgentwiththeIndian

    Patent Office and a certified International Welding Engineer. He has published over 25 papers in

    scientificjournals.
