IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH Mattoon, Illinois

ST. COLUMCILLE CHURCH Sullivan, Illinois JULY 7, 2019

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Your peace will rest on that person.”

Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings

INTRODUCTION

In next Sunday’s Gospel, (July 14), figuring out how to live in faith can sometimes create a confusion of copious rules, regulations, practices and prohibitions. The reality, however, is a rather simple “heart and soul” thing. Loving and responding to God cannot happen apart from loving one’s neighbor with deep compassion. Today’s Gospel reminds us that the neighbor might not be the one we would choose to love. The good Samaritan story is a cautionary tale that catches our attention for good reason.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

fully live God’s commandments

is compassionate love of neighbor

ST. COLUMCILLE A Pilgrim’s Progress As we continue to celebrate this 243rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s “birth certificate,” we can be grateful it acknowledges that “Nature’s God” is the source of our rights and that our lives are dependent on Divine Providence. Of the 56 signatures on the Declaration, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland was the only Catholic. While his native state had been originally chartered by England’s Charles I in 1632 as a refuge for Catholics persecuted in the British Isles, after a few years Catholic Marylanders were ousted from government by a Protestant-led coup. Churches were destroyed, freedom of worship was denied to Catholics, priests were outlawed, and Catholics were forbidden to vote or hold public office. The Church continue to function “underground” and priests-in-disguise often celebrated mass in private home chapels. With no Catholic schools in the colonies, his parents sent Charles Carroll at age 11 to a Jesuit school in northern France. He then studied law in Paris and London before returning home after 17 years. Charles’ father (also Charles Carroll) was the wealthiest man in the colonies, so when his son committed treason against King George III by pledging his life, fortune, and sacred honor in the cause of Independence he had a lot to lose. As the question of breaking away from England came to the fore, the choice for faithful Catholics was to side with the English government that had been persecuting Catholics for 200 years or to join the rebels, most of whom were no friends of the Church. Under the pseudonym “First Citizen,” Carroll began writing articles in favor of American independence and opposing British taxation of the colonies without representation. After the first shots were fired he helped to finance the Continental Army. In 1776 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress and would sign the Declaration. He later served as a Maryland state, and a U.S. Senator advocating for the abolition of slavery in Maryland. Charles’ cousin John Carroll would be the first Archbishop of Baltimore. Charles would be the last surviving signer of the Declaration, dying on November 14, 1832 at the age of 95. He died with the fervent prayer, “that the republic created by the Declaration of Independence may continue to the end of time.” May that hope guide our prayers and actions as well. Pax et Bonum, fr john

DID YOU KNOW…. THIS PARISH WILL SOON OFFER CONFIRMA-TION PRIOR TO FIRST HOLY COMMUNION??

Indeed, all parishes within the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois are restoring the Original Order of the Sacra-ments of Initiation between 2019-2025. In the early Church, the person was immersed into the waters of Baptism, anointed with chrism, and shared in the Eucharistic meal as part of a single event. Over time, and for many reasons, the celebration of these three sacraments became separated from one another. In the renewal stemming from the Second Vatican Council, the Church was asked to more clearly set forth the intimate connection of Confirmation with the whole of Christian initiation. This original order also helps us recognize that sharing in the Eucharist com-pletes our initiation into the Church and that it is Eucharist which is the “source and summit of our faith.” Go to https://www.dio.org/restoredorder for more in-formation on this important change.

Family Camp: You are invited to come and share the fun of the 30th annual Family Camp/Renewal Days for Family and Friends of People with disabilities on September 21-22 at Lake Williamson Christian Center, Carlinville, IL. For Further in-formation, please consult the flyer posted on our bulletin board.

Prayer for Summer

Dear God, you made the four seasons.

Each summer arrives as part of your perfect pattern and will,

yet is unique unto itself. This summer, help me to see

not only the enjoyment of vacations, but the joy of your will.

Help me to feel not only the pleasure of a warm sun, but the contentment of a life guided by you. Help me to know, not only the satisfaction

of a project completed, but the fulfillment of a heart filled by you.

Help me to see you in all things, Lord, in all the seasons of life you give us.

Amen.
