PLETCHER SOPHOMORES WORK AT PALMBEACH DOWNS A number of Todd Pletcher=s top 3-year-old worked atPalm Beach Downs over the weekend. Both GI Champagne S. winner Daredevil (More Than Ready)and GI Breeders= Futurity victor Carpe Diem (Giant=s

Causeway) fired bulletswith Daredevil completingfive panels in :59.64 onSunday and Carpe Diemgoing that same distancein :59.42 Saturday.AThey=re both trainingexceptionally well,@Pletcher said. ACarpeDiem=s breeze yesterdaywas very impressive. Hecame out of it well, andwe=re planning to go inthe [GII] Tampa Bay

Derby [Mar. 7] with him. I thought Daredevil workedextremely well this morning also. We=re planning to goin the [GII] Swale [S. Feb. 28] with him.@ Starlight Racing=s Itsaknockout (Lemon Drop Kid),who was successful in his unveiling Dec. 7 andannexed an optional claimer Jan. 4, will be aiming forthe GI Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 21. He worked fivefurlongs in 1:00.22 Sunday. AI thought he breezedreally well this morning,@ Pletcher said of Itsaknockout.AHe=s on schedule for the Fountain of Youth.@ J S Bach (Tale of the Cat), an 8 1/2-length maidenwinner Dec. 19, covered five panels in 1:00.94. AI wasvery happy with him this morning. He=s either going togo to the [GIII] Southwest [S. at Oaklawn Feb. 16] orthe [GII] Risen Star [S. at the Fair Grounds Feb. 21].@ Khozan (Distorted Humor), who was tabbed a J “TDNRising Star” J in his debut Jan. 24, worked fourfurlongs in :49 flat.

AI think he=s on a similar program to whatConstitution (Tapit) was on last year,@ the conditionerexplained. AHe broke his maiden, won an allowance, and then won the Florida Derby. But we have a lot ofoptions.@ GI Hopeful S. victor Competitive Edge (Super Saver)breezed five furlongs in 1:00.22. ACompetitive Edge isdoing well,@ Pletcher offered. AWe haven=t decided on afirst start [of 2015] yet.@ With 32 sophomores nominated to the Triple Crown,Pletcher acknowledged that there will be races on theDerby trail when stablemates will face each other.AThere=s going to be certain cases where we=re going tohave to run more than one [horse in a prep],@ heexplained. AA lot of it is about timing. A good thingabout this time of year is that there are preps prettymuch every weekend, either here or in Tampa orOaklawn or Louisiana, so we have some options tomove them around. Then it=s just about timing--whenthey ran last and what kind of schedule they=re on.@

PLETCHER VICTORS EXIT RACES IN FINEFORM The Todd Pletcher stable had a successful weekendin both Florida and New York, with Constitution (Tapit)capturing the GI Donn H.,Mshawish (Medaglia d=Oro)taking the GI GulfstreamPark Turf H., Sandiva(Footstepsinthesand {GB})annexing the GIII SuwanneeRiver S., and Far From Over(Blame) pulling a minor upsetin Aqueduct=s GIII Withers S. AWe were hopeful that wecould have a big day,@Pletcher said. AWe felt likewe had some horses thatwere training very well. In Mshawish and Sandiva=scase, they were both coming off stakes wins at themeet, and Constitution, we knew he liked Gulfstreamfrom last year. So we were optimistic, but at the sametime, we knew they were difficult races to win.@ cont. p4

As for Far From Over, the conditioner noted that, AHecame back well. Thankfully, he didn=t grab anythingwhen he stumbled leaving the gate. I thought it was apretty impressive effort to do that in his second start. Iwould say the most likely scenario is that he=ll stay inNew York and run in the [GIII] Gotham [S. Mar. 7].@ Although Pletcher has not finalized his future plansfor the rest of his runners, he did say that the G1 DubaiWorld Cup Mar. 28 is a possibility for WinStar and TwinCreeks Racing=s Constitution. AWe=ve kicked aroundthe idea of Dubai, but we haven=t committed to it yet. It=s certainly one of the options.@

VALID IN FINE FETTLE AFTER HOOPER WIN Valid (Medaglia d=Oro) exited his GIII Fred Hooper S.victory in excellent conditioner, according to trainerMarcus Vitali. Lochte (Medaglia d=Oro) also returnedfrom his seventh-place effort in the GI Gulfstream ParkTurf H. well, Vitalia noted. AThey came out of the racesexcellent,@ Vitali said. AWhen you show up and run likethey did, the next day, of course, they=re a little tired. Imean, I=m tired, never mind them.@ As for Valid=s race, Vitali said, AIt was phenomenal. He=s a nice horse. The team did a great job with him. Idon=t have anything picked out for him yet, but in acouple days I=ll start thinking about it. He ran huge.@ AI was a little disappointed we didn=t get any runningroom with Lochte,@ Vitali continued. AIt looked like wewere in good position, just nothing opened up. Wewere in the box and, unfortunately in turf racing, that=sthe way it goes. You=ve either got no horse or a lot ofhorse and nowhere to go. In our case it was a lot ofhorse with nowhere to go.@

BHA TO IMPLEMENT HAIR TESTING The British Horseracing Authority will implement hairtesting to screen for the retrospective administration ofanabolic steroids as part of its enhanced zero-toleranceanabolic steroids policy, according to Racing Post. Hair samples can be used to detect if a horse hasreceived anabolic steroids at any point in its life. Underthe BHA=s new policy, which will go into effect Mar. 2,a racehorse may not be administered anabolic steroidsat any point from birth to retirement from racing. Thosefound to have received anabolic steroids will be bannedfrom racing for 14 months. All horses imported intoBritain will be required to be accompanied by a negativeanabolic steroids sample. In the U.S., yearlings areallowed to receive exogenous anabolic steroids until 45days prior to sales. "Hair sampling on its own could be used to bringcharges in certain circumstances," BHA media managerRobin Mounsey told Racing Post. "Those circumstanceswould include the ability to prove in whose care thehorse was in at the time of the administration, and thatit was against the rules of racing to administer thesubstances in question." Dr. Scott Stanley from UC Davis addressed the topicof hair samples for anti-doping at last week=sConsignors and Commercial Breeders= Associationeducational seminar in Lexington, Kentucky. cont. p8

BHA to Implement Hair Testing cont. "I've spoken to sale companies to try to get ahead ofthis," said Stanley. "The vast majority of horses wouldbe tested before going overseas to give the buyer orseller confidence, but we have yet to determine themost appropriate way to go." He added, "The BHA responded with a very strongstatement saying they will not have anabolic steroids inBritish horse racing," said Stanley. "Drugs remain in thehair almost permanently. The blood supply is whatdelivers the drug into the hair at the follicle as it isgrowing. We can also determine if it is multiple orsingular administration."

This bested the opening session topper in2014, when Devious Intent sold to Barbara Banke=sStonestreet Stable for $350,000. Another notable seller was stakes winner IrishPresence (Midnight Lute), who realized $310,000.Forging Oaks Farm purchased the 5-year-old MidnightLute mare, who is also graded stakes-placed, fromDarby Dan Farm, agent. Mares proved more popular than short yearlingsyesterday, as only one youngster hit the six-figuremark. A bay Into Mischief filly (hip 192) born on Feb. 3of last year went for $180,000 at the very end of thenight. Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt bought the filly fromBlake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent.

Star of the Show Gamay Noir was the talking horse on the salegrounds yesterday, and she did not disappoint. The 5-year-old Harlan=s Holiday mare topped the sessionwhen she sold to Justin Casse for $375,000. AI thought she might bring a touch more than thatbecause she was the star of the show here,@ saidCasse. In 2014, Gamay Noir won the Rampart S. and ObeahS., which are both Grade III contests, after beingclaimed for $100,000 by trainer Marty Wolfson. AMyron Miller and the Farnsworth crew do anexcellent job of finding mares like this and developingthem,@ said Casse. AThis is just another examplebecause it seems like, year in and year out, we are heretrying to buy them.@

Not surprisingly, another thing going for Gamay Noirwas her pedigree. The bay mare is by successful sireHarlan=s Holiday, who died in 2013, and she hails froma female family that has produced Grade I winners AlMamoon, La Gueriere and Icon Project, among others. AWhat was there not to like?@ asked Casse of hispurchase, who was consigned by Taylor Made SalesAgency, agent. AObviously there are no more Harlan=sHolidays coming. She is a very typical Harlan=s Holiday,a pretty version of the sire and out of an Unbridledmare. She comes from a deep family.@ Casse bought Gamay Noir on behalf of a newpartnership. Although he declined to name thoseinvolved, Casse did say that the partnership wasdomestic. Gamay Noir was offered as a racing orbroodmare prospect, but plans call for her to be retired. AWe will probably end up breeding her as soon aspossible,@ said Casse. AWe will see [to which stallion],but I will have to discuss that with some of thepartners.@

One and Done Attorney F. Thomas Conway was a man who knewwhat he wanted when it came to yesterday=s openingsession of the February sale. His associates got theauction off to a quick start by going to $235,000 tosecure graded stakes-placed Clearbrook. B R E E D E R S’ E D I T I O NAMERICAEugenio Colombo Joins WHOA:

Bloodstock agent Eugenio Colombo has added hisvoice to those supporting federal legislation to prohibitthe use of performance-enhancing drugs in horse racingthrough the Water Hay Oats Alliance. In a statementfrom WHOA, Colombo said, AYes, we MUST run onzero medication for three simple reasons: 1) to protectthe punters; 2) to regain respect from our society; and3) prove that we are not animal abusers, but sportsmenwho love horses. Using Lasix and Bute, like any doping, is unethicaland unintelligent. If these drugs give an advantage, since all horses are running on them, all it really does isjust raise the training/vet costs to the owner. Also, when running on zero medication, we will knowthe true racing ability of the horse and their real (notinflated) financial value. Another point is to put back more emphasis onstamina in the breed. The "fast food" culture translatesinto cheap speed and has diminished the quality of thebreed. In actuality, we breed 7-8 furlong horses andwhen we ask them to run 1 1/4 mile, they crash. Any shortcut taken simply lowers the quality of theproduct. We are shooting ourselves in the foot...badly. I am very committed to supporting WHOA in its effortsto protect the quality and integrity of our industry.@
