Department of Arts Management

GENERAL Objectives of Arts Management Master’s Degree (EN/FI) The student acquires skills in leadership, economy, communication, academic research and analytic thinking, which enable him or her to act in various fields of arts, culture and creative industries in demanding expert and management positions and as an entrepreneur. LEARNING OBJECTIVES of the Arts Management main subject study modules (120 cr) The main subject studies in arts management includes five (5) different modules. The first two modules focus on society and the arts field at large while the third module covers the practical aspects of managing art. The fourth module is an on-going part of the master’s degree studies and focuses on the personal development of each student and his/her career and identity building as an arts management professional. The final module prepares stu-dents for the academic research traditions and practices and gives support for writing a Mas-ter’s Thesis in arts management. The main subject study modules consists totally of 120 credits. MODULE 1: Art, Management and Society (13 cr) Global Management of the Arts and Culture establishes the foundation for key concepts, methods and justification for arts and culture and provides the vocabulary with which you will engage over issues in the Programme. Starting with a critical inquiry of key Western and Asian aesthetic considerations in contemporary art practice, you will examine key issues such as the formation of cultural capital, globalisation and the economics of culture, changes in social structure and cultural expression, the evolving role of cultural identity in society and the interdisciplinarity of genres across forms and cultures. You will also be introduced to modern arts management theories and the practice of arts management in various arts and cultural contexts. The module is concerned with raising your awareness of the significance of the arts in society and the discourse surrounding arts practice today, and examine issues in the management of the arts, such as sponsorship, fundraising, audience development, and other pertinent issues. Art, Management and Society sets the framework for key concepts, methods and justifica-tion for the field of arts management. The learning outcomes of the module consist of ac-quiring a critical inquiry of different art views and valuation of art as well as identifying the logics of value creation in both public and private creative enterprises. After the module, students are able to debate on the core issues of philosophical, political and other social con-texts of artistic productions through concepts such as creative economy and industries, cul-tural capital, and experience economy. Finally, the learning objective of the module is to be able to recognize the reasons, interests and actors in the field of arts management and to identify the ethical aspects and societal impacts of arts and arts management. Module 1 consists of the following courses:

MODULE 2: Cultural Planning and Leadership (14 cr) Cultural Planning and Leadership module provides an overview of the policies affecting the field of arts management, and develops an understanding of how to influence policy making through leadership. In the end of the module the students are able to identify local, national and European level cultural planning and recognize the role of arts managers in these pro-cesses. The students are familiar with the impacts of cultural planning and are able to iden-tify key aspects of leadership theory and apply various leadership practices in to the art field. Finally, the students distinguish the basics of cultural economics to develop a solid under-standing of effective cultural leadership in the contemporary society. Module 2 consists of the following courses:

MODULE 3: Strategic Methods for Arts Managers (34 cr) Strategic Methods for Arts Managers module focuses on the managerial practices of arts managers. The module consists of three parts that cover the core aspects of managing and mediating organizations, projects and productions in the field of art: 1) Managing the Arts, 2) Mediating the Arts, and 3) Financing the Arts.

The learning outcomes of the first part covers identifying the key aspects of strategic man-agement, human resource management, and production management in the arts. In partic-ular, the students are able to recognize the approach of co-production and co-creation in artistic and creative work. After the second part of the module the students are able to iden-tify and apply the key tools of strategic marketing and branding, interactive media commu-nication and experiential stakeholder and audience engagement with or without digital out-reach. The learning outcomes of the third part of the module are to recognize the various financial resources and opportunities of artistic organizations and enterprises, and to iden-tify the accurate practices of both internal and external accounting. The financing of arts will be examined both from accounting (financial and managerial) and fundraising (strategic partnerships, sponsorship, venture capital, public and private funding) perspectives. Module 3 consists of the following courses:

MODULE 4: Personal Development (6 cr) Personal Development module provides support for the professional development of future arts managers. Learning outcomes of the module covers abilities of identifying and applying tools for developing one’s self-leadership, career planning and one’s own specialty, profes-sional identity and entrepreneurial mindset as well as the transferable skills. After the mod-ule students’ self-awareness and skills for coaching and mentoring others have increased. Personal development module continues throughout the studies and gives altogether 6 cred-its.

MODULE 5: Arts Management Research and Methodologies (53 cr) The module on Arts Management Research and Methodologies focuses on academic re-search in the field of arts management. The key learning outcomes of the module consists of practicing analytical skills and abilities to look at the field specific phenomena from different viewpoints. The students are able to plan, conduct and assess academic research and apply both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The students recognize academic vo-cabulary and conventions of academic English and are able to apply them in academic texts. The module aims for writing an individual academic piece – Master’s Thesis – through which the students are able to deepen their expertise on topics of their interests. The learn-ing objectives of Master’s Thesis are described separately. Module 5 consists of the following courses:

S-AM2 Art and Value in Contemporary Economy (4 cr) Module 1: Art, Management and Society Learning objectives The student will learn to describe the different views of defining art and explain value and valuation in arts from different perspectives. Learning outcomes The student will be able to:

- describe the historical development of arts management, the key theoretical approaches in the field, and the current environment of arts organizations and institutions

- analyse art and its value in the broader societal context, in particular in relation to the econ-omy of contemporary societies

- define the field of arts management and assess its relation to artistic, economic and societal practices of our time

Scale of assessment 0-5 Preceding studies There are no formal prerequisites for taking the course. However, a basic understanding and expe-rience of leadership concepts will be conducive to learning. Assignments and criteria for evaluation Written case analysis (10% of final grade), Individual reflection paper (25% of final grade), StrengthsFinder profile incl. a reflection paper on your profile (20% of final grade), Attendance and activity in class (20% of final grade), and Group assignment (25% of final grade). At least 50 per cent (‘pass’) is required for all elements of the examination in order to pass the course. The grading of class activity is based on the perceived quality of the student’s input to the learning process of the other students in class. Written case analysis The case analysis is to be written individually. The main point of the case analysis is about identify-ing what the fundamental leadership and organizational issues are, how they can be analysed and

understood, as well as what kind of solutions there might be. The proposed solution(s) should fol-low logically from the analysis. The length of the paper should be approximately 2 pages. Reflection paper on readings The reflection paper is to be written individually. It is based on reading a number of articles on dif-ferent aspects of leadership. You should first read the articles listed for the session (available in Op-tima), then write a short summary of the key points in each topic (not each article), followed by your own reflections on the key points: what do they mean to you and how would you deal with them in terms of leadership? The paper should be between 5 and 8 pages. Individual reflection assignment (StrengthsFinder) You are to submit the results of your Strengthsfinder test (short version), as well as an individual reflection paper (max 2 pages) based on your Strengthfinder results. In the paper you are to discuss and reflect on your personal strengths as well as how they could be used in your (current and/or future) leadership. Group assignment This is an assignment done in groups. In your group, you are to analyze a film as a leadership case. Apply the theories and readings to the movie and any characters who you feel played significant leadership roles. What did the main character and others do well (or not) according to course mate-rial? What could the main character and others have done more effectively? What leadership les-sons did you learn from this project? The written report is to be 4 pages, and you need to prepare to present the main findings orally. Attendance and activity In order to pass the class, you have to attend at least 2 out of the 3 classes, as well the inten-sive workshop. If you are unable to do this, please submit no later than May 3rd an approxi-mately 3 pages long learning diary reflecting on the topic and most important learning points of (each of) the seminar(s)/classes that you failed to attend. For missing the workshop, there is a more advanced assignment. Please note that part of your grade will consist of presence (and activ-ity) points. Feedback
