2014GREAT LAKES REGION “D” RALLY/CONVENTION

THURSDAY EVENING SUPPER RIDEFor the past 4 years we have enjoyed putting together a supper ride for all the members attending the Indiana District Spring Wing Warm Up and your Region “D” Directors Lee & Kay Tieche have asked us to plan one for this years Region “D” Rally so we have one planned for Thursday evening Sept. 11th.

We will be going on a 75 mile leisurely ride thru northern Indiana and over into northern Ohio before stopping to eat. The meal will consist of a buffet with salad bar/drinks/desserts/tax and gratuity for a total of $12.75 per person—NO SUBSTITUTES OR OFF THE MENU.

It will be a 46 mile trip back to the fairgrounds and we would like for everyone to please ride back together as a group with the same leader you rode down with.

In case of rain or bad weather we will have a pizza party there at the fairgrounds so if it should be raining be sure to check in at the fairgrounds to get your money paid for the pizza so we will know how many pizzas to order.

Have your BIKES LINED UP by 4:00 and we will have a riders meeting and leave for the ride at 4:15 SHARP. Have your BIKES FUELED AND BLADDERS EMPTY as we WILL NOT BE STOPPING before arriving at the restaurant.

If you would like to join us on the supper ride please contact us so we can get your name on the list as we have to let the

restaurant know how many people to prepare food for.

WOW, where has this summer gone already? Wing Ding is over and it’s August. I think I missed something along the way except for the crazy Indiana weather. Who would have thought that it would be 55° in the middle of July?

Wing Ding 36 is in the history books and we had a great time attending. However, I can’t recall a city with so much road construction. Attendance this year was 8,873 and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Closing ceremony was a great time for one of our Indiana members as he won one of the big prizes. Congrats to Mike Brower of Chapter U in Angola for winning the grand prize motorcycle. Mike chose a blue 2014 Valkyrie. Honda has been in contact with Mike and he will be taking delivery through Hayden Honda In Kendallville, IN. in the not too distant future. Since Mike is from my home Chapter, it made the event just a little more special .

As most of you probably know by now, Wing Ding 37 will be held in Huntsville, AL. September 3-6, 2015. Kathy and I have already registered to attend and we are looking forward to it. We hope to see all of you there.

A few other upcoming events that might be of interest to our members are the Region D Rally coming up September 11-13, in Kendallville, IN. This will almost be in my back yard and I’m really looking forward to this one.

August 9th will be the 9th Annual Chapter U Hog Roast. It will be held at Commons Park in Angola, IN. starting at 11:00 AM. In addition to some great food, there will be a silent auction, guided rides and the now famous 2nd Annual Chicken Chunkin’ Contest. C’mon up to Angola for a fun day with your friends.

Fall Fest will be coming up on the 4th of October in Bloomington, IN. at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Watch for more details and mark this date on your calendar.

Remember, to get the most out of your membership, you need to PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE !

Drive safe and be careful.

“Th-Th-Th-Th-Th-... That’s all, folks”!

Happy Trails

WING DING, if you did not attend, you missed a great time in Madison. We made the trip up on Sunday stopping by Fort Atkinson to visit will old friends. Monday we meet up with Chapter Members and went to the House on the Rock, what a place, with our phones dead from taking picture, no GPS working and riding in the rain, we made our way to Madison. When we saw a Wal-Mart sign we tried to stop in but no parking lot, the lot was under the Wal-Mart, it was a nice place out of the rain to ask for directions.

On Tuesday Penny and I filled in for Mike & Theresa at Registration, with the help of the District staff, Grumpy, Kay and some others from A-2 and a couple from Ohio… we handed out over 700 Registration packets from noon to 5 pm. Boy what a FUN day meeting members from all over the Globe. Our tail pipes were dragging, but all that worked the booth, had fun!! During the week we visited the vendors, maybe a few to many times, but if you were looking for something, it could be found. There were seminars, riding classes, team challenges, bike rides guided and unguided, a lot to do! The bike judging and light parade were also lots of fun. If you could not find something to do you were just not looking.

I did see some members riding without Helmets, I worry about their safety. As Educators it’s our job to get the word out, about how much better off you are to ride with the proper gear. I talked with one young man that had his son on the back wearing a helmet, and asked why he was wearing a helmet, and his answer was I want him to be safe! My comment to him was don’t you think HE wants you to be safe also???

Safety is for Life…RIDE SAFE!!!

Hi GWRRA Members of Indiana;

Ok July has come and gone, if we didn’t know better we would have thought it was April or May by the weather we have had. Don’t get us wrong we like the cooler temperatures but 60 degrees in July, really?

Did everybody have a good time at Wing Ding, sad to say Connie and I did not make it as my activities director informed me that we had made prior plans to do a camping trip with my son and his family, a whitewater rafting trip on the New River in WV, what a blast. We are looking at Wing Ding 37 in Huntsville AL. this one looks very interesting and should be a good time. As we write the article the Michigan Rally is about to start in Midland MI. and Region D Rally in Kendallville IN. is just around the corner. They look like they are going to be a good time for all.

What are the other Chapters in our section doing, well here is what we have. Chapter Q2 is doing an Ice Cream ride today and they are attending the Hog Roast in Angola with a side trip to the Auburn/Cord Museum on the 9th, a Chapter Picnic on the 16th, another Ice Cream Ride on the 23rd and attending the Illiana races on the 30th. Chapter H and U2 are doing Dinner Rides as is Chapter S2. Now we come to Chapter O2 and their up-coming chapter events and rides. They will be having their Chapter Corn & Sausage roast on the 2nd of August and doing a Christmas in August on the 3rd but the one up-coming event that was started by past Chapter O2 CD Jim McPhail 23 years ago and has been continually held each year, is the ride to the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis on the 6th of September. This event, also known as the Pop-Tab Ride, grew steadily for many years to include a large number of chapter’s through-out the state and some chapters from sounding states, but has faltered in past few years. Last years Ride only has 2-3 other chapters attend to bring their collection of Pop-Tabs and pantry items. What happened, this is a worthy charity ride and inexpensive to attend. In the past the ride left Mishawaka with 20-30 riders and picked up riders in Peru, Kokomo and Westfield, with other chapters coming from around the state and meeting at the RMH around 2 pm. Chapter O2 would like to see the past chapter attendance return to its larger numbers, what do you say District Indiana; you know we can do it. Mark it on your calendar and hope to see you all this September 6th. As you may have noticed this event is close to us and we hope to see it get big again. OK now that you know where we stand I will shut-up. See you all around the state.

Hello Hoosiers

Well here it is the end of July and Carol and I have had another busy month. Of course it started with another great Wing Ding. Carol, Shawna and I went up early to do some sight seeing before Wing Ding started.

We took a trip to House on the Rock, went to a Circus Museum and did a little riding through the area. We even managed to make it to Lake Michigan. It is a wonderful area to ride through and hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the sights.

When Wing Ding started Carol, Shawna & I got busy, Tuesday and Wednesday we worked registration and meet up with some of our friends from years past and made some new friends. Then it was off to the vendors to spend a little money and wouldn’t you know, we started running into other people that we knew from IN Chapter M members to to other people we have meet over the years. It probably took most of a day to make a full trip through the vendors.

Before we knew it it was time for The Ultimate team Challenge and Precision riding we had a great time but all to soon it was time for Closing Ceremonies. So we will say goodbye to our Wind Ding friend until next year at Huntsville Al. See you there.

We also went to Illinois District Rally where we were asked to be Bike Show Judges and had a great time doing that. At closing Chapter O from Evansville was announced as the Chapter out of theRegion With the most attending, I believe that they had 16, way to go Chapter O. Indiana had the most District Members attending out of the Region with 10. Jerry & Mary Boehman from IN-M, put their trike in the Bike Show and Chapter M had 13 members there to support them. Thank you Chapter M and thank you Indiana for supporting Illinois.

Greetings Everyone;

What a July! This one has been unbelievable. Who thought they would have to wear a jacket or coat or even heated gear in July.

We hope you are taking full advantage of this cool riding weather, we sure are.

Here is a little food for thought. If your chapter is running out of ideas of things to do or places to go, try visiting another Chapter. You might just be able to use some of their ideas. With these new ideas, you may generate enthusiasm within your Chapter. Give it a try.

Remember, go to the GWRRA, Region or District website and check on what is going on in or around your area. You might be surprised of all the things to do.

Make plans to attend the Region D Rally in Kendallville on September 11-14. Let’s show the rest of the region what a good

time they can have in Indiana.

Couple ofthe Year

2014

Hello Indiana,

Another busy month and can you believe that here we are at the end of July, It seems like yesterday that we were at Winter Rendezvous and now we are better than half of the way throughthe year.

Carol and I went to Wing Ding with our Granddaughter Shawna and had a great time. It was her first Wing Ding and she had a great time, she even adopted a few new Uncles and Aunts so now she has started her own GWRRA family as well.

We stayed pretty busy at Wing Ding, we knew that we were going to be judges for the Ultimate Team Challenge and were also asked to be judged for Precision Riding as well.

We met up with some of the other Couples of the Year and had a great time.

Then it was off to Illinois District Rally. We had a wonderful time talking to GWRRA members over there and even recruited two new Couples while we were there. The last afternoon we met a couple from Shawnee town and tried to help them find a chapter close to them.

Illinous had a fun game called Find a Friend that encouraged you to to find someone from each Chapter in Illinois and several other States,Carol and I found all of them. I think the high point was the Flag Parade. We had flags from every state along with a flag from all branches of Service and a MIA flag led by Old Glory. Carol and I were about 10 flags from the back and what a sight it was when you got on a hill and could see all of the flags flying. Thank You Illinois for letting us be involved in that.

Now it is off to Michigan. See you there.

I would like to take the time to recognize a few of the Motorist Awareness Coordinators in our Association. They come from all across the country and have been outstanding in helping to get the message of sharing the road to the motoring public. These people have worked tirelessly for our program.

Wayne and Elva GrantWayne and Elva are the Region N (North Carolina, Virginia Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia) Motorist Awareness Coordinators. They have received recognition awards before, including being named MA Coordinators of the Year in 2009. It is their leadership skills that have made Region N tops in the organization for MA activities year after year. They recently received a funding grant for highway electric message boards throughout the region. Region N has partnered with Wal-Mart to distribute MA material in 36 region stores. They have also been responsible for a number of radio and television interviews. They will once again be receiving recognition at our Wing Ding Rally/Convention this year.

Mike and Barri CritzmanIn the one year that Mike and Barri have been Region F (California, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii) MA Coordinators I have received more phone calls from Mike than all the other coordinators combined. I like that very much. It shows an enthusiasm that, hopefully, is contagious throughout his Region. Keeping me appraised of what’s happening and asking pertinent questions shows an interest above and beyond. Mike conducted an MA information seminar at the Region F Rally/Convention this year that was very well received. Mike and Barri will be receiving a well earned recognition award in July at Wing Ding.

Robert Rosenbaum/ Bill and Mervi BannaschRobert is the Wisconsin Chapter 1-A MA Coordinator and Bill and Mervi are the Wisconsin District MA Coordinators. These three coordinators are responsible for Wisconsin being one of the more progressive districts in our organization. They lead all districts in high school driver education MA presentations. This means they have often contacted local boards of education and school administrators asking for permission to present our program to beginning drivers. This was the main goal of our program this past year and Wisconsin led the way in that respect. Bill and Mervi have been recognized in the past including MA Coordinators of the Year. Robert will be recognized this year for his outstanding work.

How fortunate we are in rider education to have such dedication. A big Thank You goes out to these wonderful Members and to so many others who work hard to make our program the success it is.
