Dear Garden Lover

As long as I can remember I have had an interest in gardens and flowers. So when I joined the family travel business it was only natural that I should want to offer garden tours. When I first put forward the idea my father was sceptical. Nevertheless we launched our first tours to the Madeira Flower Festival. They were an immediate success. We still offer our annual tour to Madeira as well as at other times of year now too. Since those early days we have expanded our programme to offer many enchanting gardens throughout Europe and beyond. We are always looking for interesting gardens to include. Many that we visit we decide not to feature, saving you the time of visiting them and being disappointed. Those gardens that are included have all been visited by me or my colleagues. We also try to secure access to gardens that you could not visit on your own as well as meetings with local gardeners and owners to gain insights into their thinking. For 2013 we have added a number of new tours to Spain, Portugal and Italy in particular, that we hope you will like. We remember that these tours are holidays, so we do try to ensure that there is the right balance of garden visits. We also recognize that you are probably interested in more than just gardens, so we do include visits to places of interest in the area, where possible. We do hope you enjoy our new programme. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Tour summary

The delights of exotic Morocco form a backdrop to two of the most special gardens we have discovered on our travels.

In Marrakech a doorway on a side road leads to one of the city's hidden wonders - Majorelle Garden. An amazing botanical garden. The vision of French artist Jacques Majorelle and bought by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980. At is heart a vivid blue building surrounded by cacti and plants suited to the climate of Morocco.

In Taroudant, 50 miles south of Agadir, our chosen hotel, Dar Al Hossoun, is set in extensive olive groves and a unique array of ’dry’ gardens. Once described as ’Kew Garden’s Desert Conservatory with the roof off’ the gardens are truly unique. They contain more than 900 species of rare flowering plants from all over the world – mostly succulents, aloes, palm trees and cacti that can survive on less than 4 inches of rainfall a year. Wandering through the interconnected courtyards you come across a new garden at every turn.
