On March 16, 1990, the Solicitor Gener-al of Canada, Pierre Cadieux, announced in the House of Com-mons that the poli-cy disallowing Sikh RCMP officers from wearing their turbans while on active duty was amended and turbans were no lon-ger an issue. Shortly after the amendment was announced, Baltej Singh Dhillon, who started the complaint, not only joined the RCMP but was one of the investigators in the Air India bombing. One would have thought that this process, which involved some nasty opinions from those against allowing turbans to become part of the RCMP uniform and therefore replace the traditional Stetson, would have settled the issue. But it didn’t. Royal Canadian Le-gions have a “hats off” policy at the door and this has been problem-atic as well. Turbans can hardly be consid-ered a hat but by the same token the “hats off” policy is a sign of respect for our fallen veterans, so the is-sue is a bit of a Gor-dian knot for Legions across the country. But the recent con-troversy surrounding young soccer players being banned from wearing turbans on the pitch by the Que-bec Soccer Federation is a clear case of dis-

crimination. The Que-bec organization had cited safety issues for its decision, and the fact that the garments were not endorsed by FIFA, but if that’s actu-ally their position then one has to wonder what they’re putting in the water in Quebec. There is no proof wearing a turban (or a patka) while playing soccer poses a dan-ger, whether playing in a league or in the back-yard. So when FIFA issued its decision to allow players to wear head coverings, as long as they met safe-ty standards and com-plied with rules (like being the same colour as uniforms for exam-ple), they had made the right decision. And it’s here where the story should end.But it doesn’t, not really. In recent conversa-tions with people here in BC, I have discov-ered there is still a group of people who believe that everyone who lives in this coun-try should conform to what they feel is the Canadian way. But what I think is the Ca-nadian way and what they think is the Cana-dian way are two com-pletely different things. And besides which, as we were taught in high school, the United States is the melting pot (i.e. the conformist nation) and Canada is the great mosaic. In other words, we wel-

come diversity and try to provide a federal-ist framework to allow this mosaic to thrive. So where is this new national “melting pot” mentality coming from? To keep it simple, what we are seeing is American values start-ing to creep into our own national identity. Let’s face it: What this whole issue comes down to is ignorance and the inability of some to accept people regardless of where they come from, etc., etc.. It is our individual differences that make us unique, whether it be the colour of our skin, the language we speak, or our religious beliefs, and it’s our abil-ity to accept and em-brace these differenc-es that makes Canada the great country it is. I don’t like hearing Canadians espous-ing American values as though they are all somehow superior to our own—because they’re not. We share quite a few but make no mistake, some we don’t. And the big one we don’t share is melt-ing pot vs. mosaic. I say let’s keep em-bracing people for who they are, not who we want them to become. Let’s stay Canadian. Clark Chooses Westside-Kelowna for Byelection B.C. Premier Chris-ty Clark has chosen the riding of West-side-Kelowna to seek election into the legis-lature. The byelection, being held on July 10th, became neces-sary after Clark lost her Vancouver-Point Grey seat to the NDP’s Da-vid Eby in the May 14th provincial general elec-tion. Cabinet Minister Ben Stewart, who won the seat easily during the general election, agreed to step down so that Clark could run in what is considered a “safe seat” for the Lib-erals. Several MLAs offered Clark their seats but Clark chose what she termed “the cradle of free enter-prise,” alluding to both former premiers WAC Bennett and his son Bill Bennett. Clark will be chal-lenged by seven can-didates in the bye-lection. They include: Jag Bhandari (BC Vision Party), Carole Gordon (NDP), Sean Upshaw (BC Conser-vatives), John Marsh (Independent), Sil-verado Socrates (In-dependent), Dayleen

Van Ryswyk (Inde-pendent), and Korry Zepik (Independent). Although formal ad-vanced polling will run from July 3 to July 6, voters can cast ballots at any time between now and the byelection at their local electoral district office. There are a number of major issues that should be the focus of this election and haveconstantly frustrated taxpayers everywhere. Balancing the budget should be the numberone priority. But what does this mean and how much debt do we now have?The next is pay equi-ty between govern-ment workers and the private sector. Why is it acceptablethat government work-ers are paid a premi-um when compared to their private sectorcounterparts? This is an issue of both eco-nomic and fairness, and if the BC government isserious about balanc-ing the budget there must be a review of pub-lic sector wages andbenefits to ensure they are compa-rable with private sector equivalents. The last issue I want to touch on is fiscal…the govern-ment has not cho-sen to seek revenuesfrom the “free riders,” that is, people of means that are exempt from paying for servicesthe government pro-vides. This again should be an in-tegral part of bal-ancing the budget.

I’s a classic immi-grant story. A young man leaves his home country to pursue his dreams in a country where, with hard work, his dreams can be re-alised. He’s left his family in their home country while he works to establish a stable life in what will become their new country. The undertaking is difficult: a new language to learn (or in Canada’s case a choice of two), new customs, new challenges—and all done while under the cloud of loneliness that being separated from family creates. It’s a story of courage—and, as it was for many im-migrants, it’s the story of Jas and Mandeep Sidhu, owners of Best of India Restau-rant in Oliver, BC.

Jas Sidhu came to Canada (and spe-cifically Oliver) in 1992, while his wife, Mandeep, and their five children stayed behind in the Punjab province of India. After trying his hand at a few jobs in Oliver he moved to Winnipeg, where he began his career in the restaurant busi-ness. He accepted a job at the Royal Crown Restaurant, a 900-seat revolving restaurant in Winnipeg, starting as a dishwasher and lit-erally working his way up to head chef with-in six months. It was during his one and a half years in Winnipeg that Sidhu gained the experience, ability and confidence to run his own restaurant, and in 1996 he moved back to Oliver, where his fami-

ly finally joined him, to open Best of India. Sidhu says family is everything for him and his wife. Their five chil-dren, one son and four girls, are now grown and busy leading their lives, but they always help out at the restau-rant when they’re in town. Sidhu says that’s why he considers Best of India a “family” restaurant. Sidhu’s son is in the RCMP and he has four daughters in nursing, practicing in the Okanagan valley so they can be close to home to help out when they visit. Sidhu once rented the Oliver arena for one of his daugh-ters’ weddings that was the only venue that could accommo-date the long guest list. In terms of the restau-rant, Sidhu was quick

to acknowledge the help of Michael New-man during the start-up phase of Best of India. Michael, who passed away earlier this year, helped trans-late and design the menus, helped with decorations, and was generally around to help in any way that he could—this, of course, in typical Michael Newman style. Sidhu summed it up: “Michael was a great help.” Although in past years Jas and Mandeep have closed the restaurant during the slow winter months and spent their time visiting family and friends back in India, lately they have been, and will be for the fore-seeable future, staying in Oliver and keeping the restaurant open year-round. Ultimate-

ly, the best months start when school ends for the year and winery tours begin. “Winery tours are a huge benefit,” says Sidhu. “It gets very busy some nights”. On those nights, Sidhu says it’s nice to be able to suggest to people that they walk along the river while their table is readied. It’s a very enjoyable experience for peo-ple visiting the area he says and it’s a di-rect result of a being in a great location. Being directly across from the Oliver The-atre on the main drag doesn’t hurt either. “When there’s a good movie playing we usually have a great night,” says Sidhu. Best of India of-fers traditional Indian food, which Sidhu pre-pares himself, while Mandeep runs the front of the house and prepares appetizers. Of course there are various levels of heat that come with Indian food and Sidhu chuck-led as he described the 0 to 10 scale they use—basically mild, medium and hot—which then moves into a “sweat” scale for the real diehards. The fact is, for real traditional Indian cuisine Best of India is the only game in town and Sidhu is proud to share his knowledge and skill with his customers. In fact, during one cooking session in Osoyoos, an event expected to attract about 15 people saw

over 40 actually show up. Sidhu spent the evening showing at-tendees the intricacies of Indian cooking and sharing recipes for foodie favourites like samosas, tandoori and butter chicken. Sidhu says he likes to give back to the community, whether teaching peo-ple how to cook Indian food or supporting the good works of so many community groups. He and Mandeep also like to support the ef-forts of South Okana-gan Senior Secondary and the students who attend there. Next to family, being com-munity-minded is im-portant for them both. Sidhu says he and Mandeep hope to re-tire in three years or so, and whether the restaurant continues in the family or is taken over by someone else remains to be seen. However things turn out, Sidhu says they will take some time for themselves, travel back to India again to visit family and friends, and generally enjoy the rewards that hard work and good deci-sions help provide.Sidhu and Mandeep regularly attend the Bhavsagar Sikh Tem-ple in Oliver, a temple that Mandeep saw his community come together to build, and as a humble re-ligious man he hes-itates to take credit for his good fortune. “Thanks be to God,” he says. “We are truly blessed.”

Golf tournament to establish scholarship legacy

The 16th annual In-doCanLinks Invitation-al Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, July 27 at Eaglepoint Golf Resort, Kamloops, and promises to be the best yet, accord-ing to Sukh Gill, one of the many organizers.

Since the tourna-ment was established, the organization has donated $150,000 to Thompson Rivers Uni-versity (TRU), House of Learning as well as more than $175,000 to the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation.

This year, with the funds raised from the tournament they plan on establishing a scholarship at Thomp-son Rivers University that will be awarded on an annual basis to an athletic student who’s GPA exceeds 3.5.

Thompson Rivers University is the fourth largest university in the British Columbia. TRU was created in 2005 when the Uni-versity College of the Cariboo joined the British Columbia Open University. They offer programs ranging from university preparation to graduate programs. TRU is centered in the heart of Kamloops,
