PERRY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

This booklet presents how a student may participate in the College Credit Plus Program. The course descriptions found at the back of this booklet are from the college and university catalogs and list the courses offered at PHS. Please refer to the Perry High School Course Registration Book for high school course descriptions and graduation requirements. Refer to the college catalog found on college websites for other courses that may be taken on the college campus. Students must complete and turn in all required forms for CCP classes to be taken at PHS before the student will be permitted to sign up for a CCP course at PHS during registration. Class registration for the 2017-2018 school year will take place during February and March 2017. It is strongly recommended that all forms be turned in to the student’s counselor before the scheduling of classes or that the student turns all forms in to the counselor when meeting with the counselor to schedule classes. The deadline for all CCP courses offered at PHS is March 10, 2017. No forms for PHS CCP courses will be accepted after this date. CCP at Perry Local Eligible students may take a variety of courses which are listed in this booklet. There is no course fee for courses that are successfully completed and earn a passing grade. The student must complete the college/university application and meet the entrance requirements for the college that is issuing the credit. This includes having a qualifying COMPASS, Accuplacer or ACT/SAT test score. Students are responsible for returning textbooks at the end of the course. Students failing to return a textbook or return a damaged textbook will be fined the cost of the book and a financial hold will be placed on the transcript and diploma until the fine is paid in full. Students who withdrawal after the fourteenth day of class or who fail the class may be required to pay the tuition cost of the course, a financial hold will be placed on the transcript and diploma until the fee is paid Enrolling in a CCP course means that the student is committed to taking a college course. This is not a decision that should be taken lightly; both parent and student should have a discussion regarding the seriousness of taking a college course and ramifications of the grade and credit

STANDARDS OF ACADEMIC PROGRESS Standards of Academic Progress (SAP) is a series of standards

required to maintain eligibility for federal student aid. This takes affect after high school graduation, but

the grades earned in CCP and the credits attempted/completed in CCP may affect a student’s SAP and

financial aid in college.

Stark State SAP-Requirements include components of completion of credit hours, grade point average

(GPA), and maximum time frame as defined below. Students who do not meet these requirements will

be disqualified from future financial aid. SAP requirements Stark State College requires that any student

who applies for or receives federal financial aid makes satisfactory academic progress toward an Ohio

Board of Regents (OBR) approved degree or certificate.

Satisfactory academic progress is measured as: • Overall grade point average of 2.0 • Completion of 67%

of the cumulative attempted credit hours, including hours of repeated coursework • Completion of OBR

approved degree or certificate within the number of required credit hours listed in the college catalog

for the associate or certificate degree multiplied by 150%, as determined by the Financial Aid Office and

includes accepted transfer credit hours and up to 30 attempted credit hours of required developmental

coursework. Successful grade completions are: A, B, C, UC, D, UD, CR Unsuccessful grade completions

are: F, W, IN, NC, NA Failure to meet these measurements will result in the loss of federal financial aid.

Monitoring Progress at the end of each term attended, a student’s academic progress will be evaluated,

based upon the standards listed above. If he or she fails to meet any of the above requirements, he or

she will receive a notification letter from the college. After the first term in which the requirements are

not met, a student will be placed on financial aid warning for one subsequent term. During the warning

period, the student will continue to be eligible for federal financial aid. The College encourages the

student to meet with an academic advisor to assist the student with his or her educational goals. After

the second term in which the requirements are not met, a student will become ineligible for federal

financial aid. In order to regain federal financial aid eligibility, a student will be required to pay for his or

her classes out of pocket until he or she is able to reach the 67% completion rate and a cumulative 2.0

GPA.

DEADLINE- All paperwork must be turned in by the deadline. Failure to do so will prevent the student from enrolling in the class. The deadline for CCP courses offered at PHS is March 10, 2017 Students planning on taking classes on the college campus must meet the college deadlines

PATHWAYS TO EARN 15 OR 30 CREDIT HOURS

Perry High School students have the opportunity to choose from 37 courses worth over 60 credit hours. The state of Ohio requires each school district to create a pathway for students to earn 15 or 30 credit hours of college credit with a partner school. PHS partners with Stark State College and Kent State University Stark Campus. Listed below are possible courses a student could take (meeting all admission requirements of Stark State College or KSU prior to enrollment) to earn these credit hours. Also, students may choose from any of the CCP courses offered at Perry High School where the student meets the admission and eligibility criteria to enroll in the course. With careful planning beginning freshmen/sophomore year, a student can earn a General Associate of Arts degree from Stark State College. All courses for this degree are offered at Perry High School and taught by PHS teachers who are also adjunct teachers at Stark State College or Kent State University Stark Campus. Detailed information regarding CCP at PHS is conveyed and all applications and required forms are handed out to students and parents. Information is also available on the Perry High School Guidance Website under CCP. Associate of Art information is listed on the website under Associate of Arts

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Student must be enrolled in both college and high school

Student to earn transcripted college and high school credit upon successful

1. Students in grades seven through twelve can apply to college and , if accepted take

nonsectarian, non-remedial courses for high school and college credit that will lead to a

degree or professional certificate

A student in grade nine may not enroll in courses under this chapter (ORC3365.031) for

which the student elects under division (B) of section 3365.06 of the ORC to receive credit

toward high school graduation for more than the equivalent of four academic school years.

A student enrolling in courses under this chapter may not enroll in courses in which the

student elects to receive credit toward high school graduation for more than the equivalent

of:

(1) Three academic school year, if the student so enrolls for the first time in grade ten

(2) Two academic school years, if the student so enrolls for the first time in grade eleven

(3) One academic school year, if the student so enrolls for the first time in grade twelve

2. By April 1st, an Intent Form stating you wish to participate in the CCP program for the

following school year must be completed and turned in to the Counseling Office. Failure to

turn in by April 1st may result in denial of CCP program participation

3. Before the March 24th students wishing to attend the college campus to complete CCP

courses along with a parent/guardian, must meet with his/her school counselor and sign

the Acknowledgement of Individual Counseling Form (attached) indicating that information

was received about all aspects of the program and are aware of your responsibilities

regarding the program. Please make the appointment AFTER you have completed the

college application, taken the college entrance exam and any required Compass and/or

placement tests required by the college or university. (**Please note college courses fill up

fast, the earlier you apply the more course selections you will have…you may be closed out

of classes if you wait to the last day).

4. The college will accept/reject your application and notify you of its’ decision. The college

you want to attend may have special entrance requirements and deadlines you must meet

before you can register for courses

5. You will have to decide whether to take a course for college credit only (student pays all

costs) or high school and college credit (no cost to student).

6. If you choose to take the course for college credit only, you will have to pay for the cost of

tuition, textbooks, materials, and fees

Page 19: INFORMATION BOOKLET 2017-2018 - Perry Localperrylocal.org/phscounseling/files/2011/10/Catalog-11.29.16.pdfP a g e | 4 TIMELINE November 2015 15th- 22nd SAT late registration deadline

2 = .66

3 OR MORE = 1.0

11. A student may take a maximum of 30 equivalent college credit hours (combination of high

school and college credit) each school year and a maximum of 120 credit hours during high

school (grades 7-12).

Determine student’s number of high school ONLY units (only high school credit is

earned)

Multiply that number by 3, and

Subtract the result from the number 30

The resulting number is the total number of college credits that CCP student may

earn that academic year

12. If you decide you no longer want to participate in the program before the term has ended,

you must file a withdrawal form with the college (obtain from the instructor) and meet with

your high school counselor to develop a new high school schedule. Failure to complete the

course, whether through a formal ‘class-drop’ process after the first fourteen days of class,

earning an F, WF, W, or nonattendance will result in any or all financial obligations for that

day after the particular course began, a “W” will appear on the college/high school transcript

and the student will be charged for the class, unless the student receives Free and Reduced

lunch-then there is no charge. If the student drops the class after the IHE’s drop date, the

college will assign a grade of “W/F” and will be charged for the class, unless the student

receives Free and Reduced lunch-then there is no charge. The course will appear on the

transcript and will carry a grade of Withdrawn/Failing, which will be computed in the same

DECIDING TO PARTICIPATE

Before you decide to participate in the program, you and your parents should consider these points

Future plans- if you plan well, this program can assist you in making future education and career decisions and in

exploring college opportunities

Athletics- Athletes in the CCP program must carry a combination of five classes (each class at least ½ credit per

semester) at the college and the high school. Students are also required to obtain from their professors evidence

that they are passing at the end of each high school grading period.

High School graduation- Even if you participate in this program, you still must meet your high school graduation

requirements in order to earn a high school diploma. Review the requirements and your standing with your high

school counselor. Make sure that the number and types of courses you take will meet Perry High School

graduation requirements. You should keep in mind that the grades you earn in college courses will affect your

grade point average, rank and your eligibility to graduate. Grades may also affect your admission into a college or

university after you graduate from high school.

College-level work- You may find college level classes to be more accelerated and academically challenging than

high school courses. You need to be able to work without supervision and have both academic and social self-

discipline. Be sure you are ready for these responsibilities. You must also be able to handle any stress that may

come with completing college work. Take an honest appraisal of yourself…are you willing to work and perform at a

college level?

Scheduling/Attendance- When attending the college campus participating in this program on a part-time basis

means that you must schedule classes at your high school and at college. Yearly schedules and vacation times are

usually different for high school and college. Sometimes it may be difficult or impossible to take the courses you

want at both schools because of scheduling conflicts. Credit attendance applies to all high school courses. You are

responsible for giving your counselor your summer, fall and spring semester schedules as soon as you have it set

with your college counselor. Colleges have class attendance requirements and CCP students must meet those

requirements whether taking the curse at PHS or on the college campus. It is the student’s responsibility to know

the college attendance policy.

Credit- High school credit will be granted only upon receipt of the official transcript/grade verification from the

college. The high school is not responsible for, nor involved in any conflict regarding grades and/or attendance at

the college

Transportation- You are responsible for transportation to the college. Neither the high school nor college will

provide transportation.

Extracurricular Activities- If you take part in this program (on the college campus), you will not be in your high

school full time. You might miss out on participating in some high school activities as a a result of your enrollment

in college. Activity times and dates are normally part of the morning announcements. You are responsible for

obtaining the morning announcements from the PHS website.

College Credit Plus on the College Campus Individual and Parent Counseling Agenda

Program eligibility- 7th grade through seniors (not 5th year seniors) academic eligibility is

established by the individual colleges and universities Options – A) College credit-parent expense or B) College and High school credit, school pays for

books and tuition, IHE pays for fees. Student must return book/s to his/her counselor Financial Responsibility- Program at a Public Institution has no cost. Student is responsible for

attending class and completing course. Student must use college/university drop procedures if necessary. If the student receives a failing grade in a class it is the guardian/parent responsibility to reimburse the cost of the course to the school district. If a student is expelled, the student/parent will reimburse the district for all costs.

Granting Academic Credit- A three credit hour or more course is worth 1 high school credit. A 2 college credit hour course is worth .66 high school credit and a one hour college credit hour course is worth .33 high school credit.

Transportation- Is the responsibility of the student. Appropriate travel time and dependable means of transportation should be considered before committing to attending the college campus.

Scheduling classes at the high school and local college can be difficult at times. No exceptions to class attendance at the high school or college can be made. Students must enroll and attend in only those classes that are set forth in the master schedule of the high school. Allowance for transportation time to and from the college must be considered when scheduling college classes. Evening classes are permissible at the college. Summer school classes are allowable as part of the CCP program. It is the student’s responsibility to give the summer, fall and/or spring college schedule of classes to his/her counselor. The counselor must have the summer and fall schedule by the end of May and the spring schedule before the high school’s winter break in December. Students may not take more than 30 credit hours/equivalent in a school year and no more than 60 credit hours total unless earning an Associate of Arts degree prior to high school graduation

Academic Counseling from your high school counselor should be sought before scheduling college classes. College courses equivalent to required high school courses may be taken but failure to complete these courses may jeopardize high school graduation. If a student has questions or concerns about his college class during the term, college counseling services will be available at the college campus

Grades received for college courses completed will be computed in the high school grade point average (GPA) on the same standard four point scale. College courses in the same subject area as high school AP courses will be weighted the same as the AP course

Benefits and Risks of the CCP program can allow you to accumulate up to 60 college credits by graduation (exception only for students earning an Associate of Arts degree), students are limited to a maximum of 30 credit hours per year (combination of high school converted credits and college credits). This can give you valuable college experience and saving you college tuition dollars. Transferring this college credit to another institution may be possible but is the sole decision of the institution receiving the credit. You may want to check on this before scheduling.

Some other academic and logistic concerns might be; o High school course activities such as exams, field trips and activities o Extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, dances and drama obligations o Academic calendar differences between the high school and college o Academic eligibility for participation in high school sports. Remember you must have

passed the equivalent of five courses worth at least 1.2 semester credit during each grading period (nine week and semester) to be eligible to participate in a sport

You must notify your school counselor no later than April 1st of your intention to participate and submit the Intent Form. Also, you and your parent/guardian must meet with your counselor before March 24th.
