Olympic Sports Admission for all WAF Levels

Did you know that all WAF members qualify for complimentary admission to all UCLA Olympic Sports home events?

WAF members can simply present their WAF Membership Card at the entry gate to receive two (2) admissions for GA seating at all events throughout the year. This admission is for any of UCLA’s Olympic Sports, not including UCLA Football or UCLA Men’s Basketball. WAF member-ship cards will be delivered to all renewed members in July. For our Director’s Circle and Wooden Benefactor members, your WAF membership card will admit up to four (4) people to any Olympic sporting event. This benefit of your WAF membership does not apply to post-season games, like NCAA tournaments or football bowl games.

Benefits to Former Student-Athletes

Last month, a number of Bruin student-athletes celebrated their graduation, earning coveted UCLA degrees. Here are a few questions and answers regarding benefits to former student-athletes.

May a UCLA donor or fan send student-athletes a graduation gift?No. Fans, boosters, and staff may not provide student-athletes with graduation gifts as that would be considered an impermissible extra benefit under NCAA rules.

Do NCAA extra benefits rules apply to our former student-athletes even though their eligibility is exhausted and they are no longer attending UCLA?Generally, NCAA rules hold former student-athletes to the same standards as current student-athletes for the purposes of awards and benefits. Even after a student-athlete plays their last game as a senior, the athletic department and its boosters are not allowed to reward these former athletes with additional benefits even years later. This rule is in place to prevent coaches from using post-eligibility rewards as a means of recruiting top athletes, explaining that they cannot receive such benefits as a student-athlete but promising such gifts after their playing days are over.

Extra benefits that may not be provided to former student-athletes include, but are not limited to: • Cash • Loans of any amount or co-signing for a loan • Use of an automobile • Paying for living/training expenses Can UCLA boosters go into business with or hire former student-athletes?Legitimate business arrangements may be made between boosters and former student-athletes. A UCLA booster may employ a former student-athlete provided he or she is compensated at the going rate based on skill level, experience, and job duties.

Planned Giving There are many ways in which you can contribute to the success and well-being of UCLA’s student-athletes. Did you know that you can leave UCLA Athletics in your estate plans and receive significant tax benefits now? There are many Planned Giving gift arrangement options that can help you establish a personal and permanent legacy; these include Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, UCLA Donor Advised Funds, and many more. Most importantly, your contribution will help support our Bruin student-athletes and can also immediately begin to benefit you and your family.

Many donors who believe in the transformative power of athletics and education choose to makea legacy gift through their wills or living trusts. Others achieve their philanthropic goals througharrangements that provide them with an income stream for life and Athletics with a future gift.There are many flexible and accessible ways to set up a legacy gift and use a variety of assets, such as real estate, cash, appreciated stock, life insurance, or retirement funds. Regarding her planned gift to UCLA Athletics, longtime supporter Jody Chapman (UCLA ’58 and ’59, Physical Education) said, “My goal is to generate at least one ongoing scholarship for each women’s sport. In my era, there were no collegiate athletic competitions for women at UCLA. Since then, UCLA has played a leading role in promoting athletics for women and that’s what initiated my interest in this program. I think planned gift arrangements are a win-win: both the school and the donor benefit. For example, annuity payments augment my income and I enjoy having a positive impact during my lifetime.”

How long have you been at UCLA? I started working here on June 1, 2016.What is your favorite college sport to follow? College Basketball. March Madness is one of the best times of year! What is your favorite pro sport to follow? Baseball. I love following all the statistics that go along with the sport.

What is your favorite sport to play? Rowing. I was a rower for most of my academic career and I just love being out on the water on a nice day. Since you began working at UCLA, what sport have you gotten to like that you never thought you would like? Water Polo. Coming from the East Coast water polo is not that popular, but it is such a great sport to watch. What is your favorite kind of music? Favorite group, band, or musician? I love country music. Some of my favorite artists are Brad Paisley, Zac Brown Band, Carrie Underwood, and Old Dominion. Where would you like to travel to that you’ve never been to before? Southeast Asia.Cat person or dog person? Definitely dogs. I have grown up with dogs all my life! What was your high school mascot? The Choate Rosemary Hall Wild Boars. Unique fact about yourself? In 9th grade I was in an a cappella group and we were able to sing the national anthem for the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics.

Bruins at the Beach – June 4, 2016 On Saturday, June 4, UCLA Athletics hosted the fourth annual “Bruins at the Beach” event at The Strand at Headlands Beach Club in Dana Point. The money raised this year, as in every year, will go towards supporting UCLA student-athletes through the Wooden Athletic Fund. With a beautiful beach setting, 150 Bruin supporters joined special guests at this annual kickoff-to-summer fundraiser. This year’s special guests included: UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero, UCLA Coaches Jim Mora, Steve Alford, Cori Close, Stein Metzger, Mike Maynard, Rip Scherer, Marques Tuiasosopo, and Tom Bradley; UCLA Athletics Hall of Famers Rafer Johnson, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Jamaal Wilkes, and Tyus Edney; and UCLA former student-athletes Sam Peszek, Khalil Bell, Darrick Martin, Dietrich Riley, Reggie Carter, Chris Markey, Donovan Carter, and Akeem Ayers. Thank you to all who were in attendance and we look forward to hopefully hosting you at the beach next year!

2016 UCLA Student-Athlete Graduation Ceremony and Celebration

On the evening of June 9, 2016, 116 student-athletes were joined by their families, friends, and coaches in Pauley Pavilion for the 2016 UCLA Student-Athlete Graduation Ceremony and Celebration. The 116 graduates were comprised of student-athletes from the following teams: Baseball (10), Basketball (2), Football (25), Golf (4), Gymnastics (5), Rowing (5), Soccer (12), Softball (3), Swimming & Diving (6), Tennis (8), Track & Field/Cross Country (20), Volleyball (8), and Water Polo (8.) Along with receiving diplomas, additional honors were awarded to a few of our student-athletes that evening. Kenneth Walker III (Football) received the Academic Momentum Award, and Danusia Francis (Gymnastics) and Daniel McClintick (Men’s Water Polo) were awarded the Tom Hansen Conference Medal, awarded to each Pac-12 Conference institution’s outstanding male and female student-athlete, based on the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. Commencement speeches were made by the male and female student-athletes with the highest GPA, Belden Long (Women’s Soccer) and Sean Davis (Men’s Track & Field and Cross Country.)

We congratulate the Class of 2016—you have made us all proud!
