About CFYCFY-Atlanta is a leading branch of the national non-profit organization, CFY. Our comprehensive Digital Learning Program, combined with our K-12 cloud-based education platform, PowerMyLearning®, helps Atlanta school districts leverage digital learning to transform their low-income school communities, promote educational equity, and improve student achievement towards college and career readiness.

CFY’s Digital Learning Program offers a multi-year school partnership that supports school leaders in driving new instructional approaches and developing deeper school-home connections. Services include ongoing blended learning consulting for teachers so they can leverage PowerMyLearning and other technologies to drive personalized instruction and student-driven learning, as well as family training throughout middle school to help parents utilize PowerMyLearning and other home strategies to support their child’s learning. To further encourage student-driven learning at home and increase parental involvement, CFY also provides in-home technology for all incoming 6th grade students. As a result, schools deepen their connectedness with families and parents become more involved in their child’s education overall.

CFY’s PowerMyLearning platform organizes thousands of free high-quality digital learning activities (defined as tutorials, educational games, simulations, interactives, videos and more) tagged by subject, grade and the Common Core Standards, and makes it easy to discover fun and engaging content that reinforce classroom learning and spark new areas of interest. PowerMyLearning offers a robust feature set, including “playlists,” which are tailored sequences of digital learning activities, also mapped to the Common Core Standards. Teachers can choose from existing playlists or design their own based on the individual learning needs of any given student, and students can find their own engaging content to improve in areas of weakness and explore areas of strength.

2013 Volunteer of the Year WinnerKay, Rebecca & Kathleen Stueve National Charity League - Buckhead Chapter

The Stueve family first learned about CFY-Atlanta in February of 2010 as members of the Buckhead Chapter of National Charity League, a nonprofit volunteer organization that is respected as one of the nation’s most distinctive mother-daughter membership organizations. Since then, Kay and her two daughters, Rebecca – a freshman at Wake Forest University – and Kathleen – a freshman at Whitefield Academy – have volunteered over 350 hours in CFY-Atlanta’s warehouse and at Family Learning Workshops across Atlanta.

In addition to the many hours Kay, Rebecca and Kathleen have volunteered as a family, each has given back distinctly in their own right. The eldest daughter, Rebecca, participated in an internship where she personally contributed over 50 hours during the summer, helping test and refurbish donated computers. Kathleen organized a volunteer group from her freshman class, in addition to volunteering to help in Spanish-speaking classrooms at CFY workshops. Kay continues to be one of CFY-Atlanta’s biggest champions, encouraging others at the National Charity League to get involved and support CFY’s work, gathering auction items for Inspire, and continually finding new ways to help CFY staff. Above all else, the Stueve family’s dedication and enthusiasm have made our jobs easier. CFY-Atlanta is honored to present this award to Kay, Rebecca, and Kathleen, and are proud to have them as part of the CFY-Atlanta team.

“We all love working in the warehouse, organizing and transforming electronic components into educational learning centers for middle school students that are hungry to learn. After a workshop, we see proud students with their new computers, leaving with their confident parents who now envision a brighter future for their children – a win/win situation! But the best thing that CFY gives me is the precious opportunity to work alongside my teenage daughters, learning and laughing together.” - Kay Stueve

CFY-Atlanta Teacher of the Year AwardIn today’s digital world, the incorporation of digital learning activities within teacher-led classroom instruction has tremendous potential to address individual student needs, boost student engagement, and facilitate learning opportunities outside the classroom – all of which increase student achievement.

CFY’s Digital Learning Program provides educators with consulting and support services to help them create effective 21st century blended learning classrooms that incorporate digital learning. CFY’s online learning platform, PowerMyLearning, offers easy access to an amazing array of digital learning content, teacher lesson plans, and playlists tied to Common Core Standards – along with specific tools that help teachers find and assign appropriate activities and track student progress – so that teachers can more effectively personalize their instruction to meet student needs.

The CFY-Atlanta Teacher of the Year Award recognizes an educator at one of our CFY-Atlanta partner schools who has demonstrated leadership in transforming their instruction through the use of digital learning and blended learning strategies. Scores of teachers have already successfully incorporated CFY’s PowerMyLearning into their classrooms, and this award is meant to celebrate their successes as well as inspire other educators to embrace the power of digital learning.

2013 Teacher of the Year WinnerMs. Ericka Hamilton - M.L. King Jr. Middle School

Following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, Ericka Hamilton has been teaching middle school math for 23 years, devoting her life’s work to making a difference in the lives of young people. So when CFY’s Digital Learning Program came to King Middle school, Mrs. Hamilton was admittedly hesitant at first. With the many demands placed on teachers today, she was concerned about having to incorporate yet another program into her day-to-day routine.

She kept an open mind, however, and working with CFY’s Blended Learning Consultant, the two began transforming her classroom into a dynamic learning environment strengthened by the use of technology, digital learning, and blended learning strategies. Once she began to see how engaged and enthusiastic her students were when using digital learning – and how even struggling students didn’t give up as they tried to master the material – she was sold. Student achievement and engagement increased, and Mrs. Hamilton proudly noted that as the year progressed, her role changed from classroom “teacher” to classroom “facilitator,” as her students increased ownership in their own learning.

Mrs. Hamilton also saw positive changes with her students’ parents, stating that “CFY’s Digital Learning Program even helped with communication at parent conferences, because parents were able to follow their child’s progress at home and understand the resources” she was using in class.

CFY is proud to honor Mrs. Hamilton for her success in transforming her teaching and students’ learning through the use of technology and blended learning. Her willingness to learn and innovate to encourage and guide her students on a path to life-long learning is truly an inspiration to others.

“CFY has positively impacted my teaching. CFY gave me the opportunity to rely more on technology and digital learning to help guide the instruction in my class – fostering higher student achievement in mathematics.” -Mrs. Hamilton

From Our Families

“As a parent, I’m always concerned about my children’s education. I want them to be successful and I look forward to them attending College. CFY has been a blessing to my family by providing quality educational tools to help them succeed. I have three boys in school and all of them have benefited tremendously from this program. Even though it is educational, it’s also fun. My children look forward to learning and doing the educational games.” - Ms. Moore, CFY-Atlanta Parent

“Without CFY’s program, I wouldn’t know what to do. Now I don’t have to worry about my kids losing focus on their work. It also helps me with my computer skills so that I can better my life with my kids.” - Ms. Clark, CFY-Atlanta Parent

“In math I was failing, but by using PowerMyLearning I got a great grade. I get a chance to have fun while learning! When I get on PowerMyLearning I play math baseball because baseball is my favorite sport. The game gives me math questions. I can select which level I want to play on and how many problems I want to answer. I can review what I learn in math class on PowerMyLearning.” - Johnathan, CFY-Atlanta Student

CFY-Atlanta Family of the Year AwardOver the years, CFY-Atlanta has seen firsthand how our Digital Learning Program benefits not just the sixth grade students we serve, but their entire family as well. By providing students and their parents with the resources, training, and support they need, CFY’s program helps families within our low-income communities overcome the obstacles that can hinder academic success. After participating, students become more self-directed learners, parents are more enabled learning partners, and the entire family is more engaged around learning together.

Each year, student and parent participants in our program are asked to each write a letter sharing how their involvement in the Digital Learning Program helped them both personally and as a family. Nominees for the Inspire Family of the Year Award are then submitted to our esteemed CFY-Atlanta Board of Directors, who have the pleasure of selecting a winner from the many incredible stories that emerge.

CFY-Atlanta’s Inspire Family of the Year Award recognizes an inspirational family that is committed to improving their academic and lifelong success. Utilizing the lessons learned from participation in CFY’s Digital Learning Program, the Family of the Year demonstrates success in working together to embrace and increase learning as a family.

All of our CFY families are truly special and continue to amaze us. We hope that you find additional inspiration in the words of this year’s winner.

Student LetterMahagoni Bracey - 7th GraderRonald E. McNair Middle School (Fulton County)

Because of CFY, I am more prepared for school. I can study and learn things at home on CFY’s website PowerMyLearning, and now when I go to school, I don’t need as much help in my subjects.

Because of CFY, I can better understand math. PowerMyLearning math games are fun, and therefore keep me interested in learning so that I’m motivated to learn more. The game Math Splat really helped me learn fractions. It was fun and challenged me to get the right answers, because if I got them wrong, I’d get

eaten by a bug! Another of my favorite games is “World of Goo”. It’s a game that lets you build towers with goo balls, and it stimulates my architectural skills. My teacher even assigned us PowerMyLearning games in math class, which was a lot more fun that doing bookwork.

Participating in the CFY program has been helpful to both me and my family. My mom loves PowerMyLearning. She is able to see playlists that my teachers have given me, track my progress, and even assign us homework! PowerMyLearning is also educational for my younger siblings. My brother enjoys playing the math and science games – especially the one where he gets to save the penguins. He thinks they are fun and cool. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s learning! PowerMyLearning is a creative, sneaky, and easy way to get kids to learn and use their minds.

In conclusion, the CFY program is amazing! PowerMyLearning is a cool way to learn. And it is the first way I’ve seen that isn’t boring. It is worth trying, and very effective.

Thank you,Mahagoni Bracey

Parent Letter (excerpt)Chacetea Bracey - Proud Parent

Mahogani’s participation in CFY’s program was a blessing for our entire family. Mahagoni is the oldest of my four children and I can truly say that learning is 1st and foremost the highest importance in our home. I would like to thank CFY for making sure that students have the technology and tools they need in order to keep up with the world around them today.

Mahagoni has always been a wonderful student, and her enthusiasm for learning has been nothing

but enhanced since she was able to get a CFY computer and start using the games and programs on PowerMyLearning. For example, when she was getting frustrated with learning fractions, I was absolutely no help to her. So I told her to go on PowerMyLearning, and she watched a video which helped her figure out how to do fractions really fast. The math programs also helped me to be able to help my children, because the methods that they use now to solve arithmetic problems are far different from those that I used 15 years ago. Recently, Mahagoni and her sister scored exceptional on their CRCT Test, with Mahagoni “Exceeding” in 3 of the 5 subjects that she tested in, and her sister “Exceeding” in two of the 5!

Technology has undoubtedly become a way of life in America, and as a parent it is imperative that we introduce this form of learning to our children as soon as possible. The CFY programs and games are fun and challenging, and provide a beneficial use of time versus regular video games. I encourage all parents that are able to take advantage of PowerMyLearning to do so, as it is a wonderful way to give kids the chance to explore different tools to incorporate in completing class assignments and projects.

Taking the time to attend the CFY workshop truly enhanced our family, and I thank you!
