General Information:

All shortcut combinations given pertain to the operating system WINDOWS. Neither macOS nor OS X is available to the author.

The Table of Contents is interactive and the links in this text are functional.

In case you encounter any questions or problems, feel free to contact [email protected]. However, please keep in mind that, in light of the current crisis, it is possible that your concerns may only be resolved to a limited extent or may have to be delayed until after the isolation period of the current situation has been lifted.

Be aware that there is no English version of the “Digitale Ressourcen” subpage of the library!

Where can I access the university library’s digital resources?

The digital resources supplied by the University can be found on the Mozarteum website under Bibliothek/Digitale Ressourcen.

The databases are divided into four sections (music and musicology, visual arts, dance and music education, as well as electronic journals) and the lists can be sorted either alphabetically or by subject. Because the library offers extensive resources, it is recommended to use the integrated search function of your web browser (Ctrl+F).

Database access:

The databases requiring a license can also be accessed externally via the VPN Client. The username and password are the same as for Groupwise / MozOnline. You will find the button for general VPN access above the list of databases (see screenshot). This enables you to view the entire range of paid resources.

All databases that are marked with an open access symbol are not subject to any access restrictions. It is well worth taking a look at them. Some have been designed as free databases (e.g. ANNO or IMSLP), others have emerged from funded research projects, while others are simply digitized collections of the institutions. For example, the Munich Pinakotheken are completely recorded in a digital tour including picture descriptions.

Further information concerning journals can be found below.

MGG additional information: MGG can be accessed via the VPN server, albeit with restrictions. Below is a guide (please note that you must be logged into the VPN for these steps to work):

If you access the MGG via VPN and try to open an article, you are likely to receive the error message shown on the right. This is due to a technical error that we have not yet been able to fix. However, there are several workarounds which allow you to still open the page:

• Press F5 • Click in the URL bar and press ENTER. • Alternatively, copying and pasting also works. It is important that the entire link is copied.

We recommend the key combinations CTRL+C (copy) and CTRL+V (paste). Alternatively, this can also be done via the right-click menu of the mouse.

• Links to MGG articles can also be sent (e.g. by e-mail or in a document). As long as the recipient is logged into the VPN server, they should be able to open the MGG article.

Electronic journals: Below is a guide to off-campus access to electronic journals. Some are included in the VPN list and should be easy to use with this access method. These include journals such as Early Music, The Musical Quarterly, and Musiktherapeutische Umschau.

However, the Mozarteum University Library also purchases a number of other licensed electronic journals. You can find these in the VPN list under the entry Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek EZB (Electronic Journal Library).

The main page of the Electronic Journals Library offers a variety of journals to choose from. There are several ways to filter the selection.

Using the search functions in the left frame (marked in red) you can search for individual journals or open the list of subject areas (norm setting, see screen above). Each journal is assigned a colour using a traffic light system: green = open access, yellow or yellow / red = licensed and available, red = not licensed. You can also search for journals or their ISSN number using the search bar at the top (marked in green).

The traffic light settings on the right (marked turquoise) can be used to switch the respective traffic light results on or off. For example, if you would like to have only the licensed journals displayed in the list, it is advisable to deselect those marked in green and red (only the yellow ones remain selected). This reduces the results in their respective subjects to manageable quantities (see screenshot on the right).

Many journals in the list are licensed through JSTOR. Here it should be noted that the latest volumes are not included in the offer, because JSTOR has a “moving wall”. The resources from JSTOR typically go back to the first issue. In ideal cases we have both the JSTOR offer and the direct subscription, so that both old and new editions are included (for example, The Musical Quarterly: access via JSTOR from 1915 to (currently) 2014, access via direct subscription from 1999 to today). It should be noted, however, that the two options are accessed separately via the EZB (see right).

NAXOS additional information: The Mozarteum University Library has access to the licensed streaming platform NAXOS. NAXOS is a collection of digitized commercial CDs and has more than 2,100,000 tracks and can be accessed via the entry in the VPN list. However, it should be noted that the Mozarteum University’s access license is limited to eight simultaneous users. This must be taken into account for tasks in the context of e-learning!

Thematic List of Databases

The university library makes an effort to categorise the variety of relevant resources in thematic categories for a better overview. This applies to the broader range of resources in the disciplines of music and musicology as well as the visual arts.

The following is a brief description of certain databases and data groups:

Composer-specific databases [Komponistenspezifische Datenbanken] In this category there are some databases in which the oeuvre of the respective composer is either partially or even entirely digitally recorded. The best-known example is certainly the DME (Digital Mozart Edition) created by the Mozarteum Foundation, but there are other examples worth mentioning. With a few exceptions, Brahms, Chopin and Schumann's entire oeuvre is digitized (both first and early prints), Bruckner also has early prints and the entire old complete edition online, and the Schönberg Center's range of resources takes it a step further with the digitization of the preserved sources (notes, sketches, correspondence, etc.). The FuxOnline database mostly refers to digital copies of the ÖNB, which can also be viewed free of charge. In other cases, the composers' correspondence (original or commented) is made available online.

Sheet music download [Notendownload allgemein] In addition to the widely used Petrucci Music Library (IMSLP), there are other sources that make digitized works available. SLUB Dresden has made more than 1,000,000 pages accessible online, including the resources of the Dresden Court Chapel with digitized works mainly from the first half of the 18th century. The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences has compiled an extremely detailed list of scores and musicians from south-west Germany in the 18th century as well as literature. However, this list does not have digital copies.

Miscellaneous Databases From the General Databases category, reference should be made to ANNO (AustriaN Newspaper Online). This research database provided by the ÖNB makes more than 22 million newspaper pages available online, the majority of which with full-text search. Anno provides a unique historical source. The Hofmeister Katalog should also be mentioned as it is a unique source for 19th century music prints.

Visual Arts In addition to bibliographical meta catalogues such as Kubikat or Artdiscovery, many databases of digitized materials are also available, such as the image index of art and architecture (Bildindex der Kunst und Architektur) with more than 1,700,000 works or the Deutsche Fotothek with over 2,000,000 images. The Mozarteum University also has access to the Prometheus image database. However, access to Prometheus requires additional login information. Please contact the manager of this information: Prof. Fraueneder.

The services provided by the museum catalogues are another important part of the research options. Many museums have some or all of their exhibits online. Some, like the Munich Pinakotheken, have their entire inventory available online. The list includes Links to the digital collections of the Uffizi Gallery, the National Gallery London, the Louvre, and the Albertina.

Europeana Europeana is an EU project and plays a major role in relation to the open access movement towards Plan S. Europeana has a kind of umbrella function over many smaller national digital databases and has a total of more than 50,000,000 entries. All results have the CC license required for Open Access and can also be filtered according to these categories. The majority of the results are pictures, but there are also books as well as audio and video files on the page.

Participants in this major project include: the European Library, German digital library, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, AthenaPlus and many more. This database is not yet integrated on the library page.

Digital collection of the Institute for Ludology Some of the graphics from the Institute for Game Research are uploaded to the Mozarteum University's repository. These can be viewed both via the library's own OPAC with search filter graphics and via the digital collection of ludology in the repository. The results listed are all provided with a CC license and can be viewed without VPN registration.

Instructions for database use (VPN features, full text search, user friendliness, etc.)

MGG instructions for use Here you will find instructions on how to open an article in the MGG via VPN access. Listed below are a few notes about the improved usability of the online version (markings in the screenshot on the following page):

• A click on the magnifying glass (small orange box on the right) opens the keyword search bar (in this case the keyword is "Symphony" in the article "Schumann"). The MGG searches for articles containing the entered word and marks the hits both in the text and in the navigation bar on the left.

• You can search for a new article in the text field marked in green. This, however, will require you to refresh the page for access via VPN (see here).

• With the turquoise marked button you can switch to an English user interface. • MGG offers translation services provided by Google for all of its content. You can activate

this service by clicking on the red box and thus have the articles translated into different languages. When activated, the "select language" field opens at the top of the browser and you can select one of the languages displayed in the screenshot below. Please keep in mind that the translations are provided by "Google Translate" and therefore the quality of said translations cannot be guaranteed.

RILM instructions for use

If you have difficulties logging in via the VPN client, try one of the following:

• Switch to a different web browser • Delete cache and/or cookies of the browser

For some time now, RILM has also offered the option of a full-text search. Examples of results in RILM that are enriched with the full text article are marked in the list (right) with a red box.

The filter bar on the left offers the option of only searching for hits with full text (turquoise box).

JSTOR instructions for use It is of course possible to search for literature directly in JSTOR. However, it is advisable to narrow down the subject areas in the "Advanced Search" option before performing a search. At the bottom of the page you will find the subject areas and can concentrate your search on the respective thematic complexes.

JSTOR offers all results in full text. This is particularly advantageous in times of "social distancing". If you would like a complete overview of the sources obtained via JSTOR, the easiest way to find them is via the detour through the EZB.
