Writing Practice — to learn to use connective words

Reorder the following picures so as to get a coherent story: see pictures on page. 115.

It was Mother’s day. Susan asked her father and brother to think of something special they could do for the occasion. Her father came u with the idea of surprising the childrten’s mother with a barbucue, the first of the year. The children agreed that it was a wonderful ides and they al; set about preparing for the barbecue. The first thing they had to do was to get the biggest steaks they could find. By the time they were ready to start the fire it was getting dark. And to their disappointment, there was not a single briquette let from the previous year. In the end they had to ask for some from neighours, disturbing the television viewing of a couple living nearby.

After you have reordered the above pictures, write a one-paragraph story based on them. The fist and last few sentences have been written for you.

KEY

There is an old green typewriter sitting in my office. It is a memento to me. It often reminds me of the days when Mother learned to type.

Just two years before I went to college, Mother bought an old typewriter. She practiced every night as soon as she had finished the dishes in order to get a job to earn enough money to send my sister and me to college.

One Wednesday afternoon, I found Mother in tears. She lost the job because she couldn’t type fast enough. But she didn’t give up easily. She kept on practicing on the green typewriter. Several years later Mother successfully became a local reporter.

Now when I am in trouble and think about giving up or when I start to feel sorry for myself and think things should be easier for me, the typewriter recalls Mother’s courage and encourages me to go ahead.
