CURRENT RESEARCH: Intelligent Compaction Quality Assurance for
In-Place Density Acceptance. Objective: Correlate Intelligent
Compaction roller machine values (RMVs) to in-place density on HMA
paving projects to determine how RMVs can be used to reduce/replace
density testing. Field work is scheduled to begin during 2012
paving season. Soliciting possible field projects for a total of
nine projects through 2014. Intelligent Compaction Research and

Recommendations for Future Research From Publication
FHWA-IF-12-002 An improved (or even better, universal) intelligent
compaction measurement values (ICMV) model is recommended to
decouple 5 stiffness for each pavement layer, so that correlation
of ICMV and in- situ spot measurements can be improved. Intelligent
Compaction Research and Development Activities
Slide 6
Recommendations for Future Research, continued For soil/subbase
compaction, real time moisture mapping is recommended and an
improved ICMV model would be needed to account for the effect of
moisture. Intelligent Compaction Research and Development
Activities
Slide 7
Recommendations for Future Research, continued For HMA
compaction, an improved ICMV model is recommended to account for
HMA temperatures, and ICMVs are recommended to be reported with
respect to a reference temperature (e.g., 68 F). Intelligent

Slide 8
Recommendations for Future Research, continued Multivariate
technique is recommended to characterize each vendors ICMV in order
to better understand the effects of machines and operation
settings. Intelligent Compaction Research and Development

Slide 9
Recommendations for Future Research, continued A standardized
IC data management and analysis tool is recommended to help speed
up the acceptance of IC technologies by agencies. Long term
pavement performance monitoring is recommended in order to identify
performance trends that may relate to ICMV values and uniformity
metrics. Intelligent Compaction Research and Development

Intelligent Compaction QA Activities QUALITY CONTROL PLAN HMA,
Base, and Soils - The Contractor shall prepare and submit a written
Quality Control Plan (QCP) for the project. As a minimum, the QCP
shall contain the following information: AASHTO /ASTM /DOT Standard
for Compaction Qualified QC Technicians Material Sampling and
Testing Testing Facility Inspection
