CHRISTIAN LITERACY MAY 2016 Christian Literacy Associates (CLA) has been providing the key to

eliminate illiteracy, build relationships, and share the Good News

using The Christian Literacy Series from right here at our

offices at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland since 1975.

“Cooperation can be spelled with two letters - WE.” As only God could orchestrate, Christian Literacy Associates was

presented an opportunity to partner with a national nonprofit named Rebecca’s

Garden of Hope. The founder of this nonprofit reached out to President

Christopher Ebner in the hopes that Christian Literacy Associates would be a

presenter at their 5-6 national conferences this year. Rebecca’s Garden of Hope

has helped over 200 Lutheran churches create after-school programs and was

looking specifically for our successful Christian-contented basic reading series to

reach the children they serve who are having reading difficulties. Even though we

did not have anything budgeted for such an endeavor, Christian Literacy could not

deny the fingerprints of God in this offer… and so we took a giant leap of faith

that He will provide for our ministry needs as we seek to reach out to more

children in need across the country this year. Last month, we presented at their

conference in Reno, NV. This month, we are scheduled to drive to Milwaukee, WI

and fly to New Orleans, LA in June. We are excited with how the Holy Spirit is

working through the Church to help children learn to read and hear the Gospel of

Jesus Christ. If you feel a prompting to give towards Christian Literacy’s

operating budget to help us in this adventure of growth, please visit our website at

www.christianliteracy.org or make a check payable to: Christian Literacy

Associates, 541 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229. Thank you for your gifts and

continued prayers and being a part of the “WE,” cooperating with God to make a

true difference in this world!

Within our own local communities this summer, Christian Literacy is ready

to help children from pre-K thru completed Kindergarten develop a strong

foundation in basic reading skills and have exposure to the Word. We will be

holding our model BLOOM (Basic Literacy Outreach Opening Minds) camps in rural,

suburban, and inner-city areas, also providing training for interested parents,

grandparents, and caregivers to continue the successful gains. If you have some-

one in mind who could benefit from this program, please call for more information

and pre-registration at 412-364-3777 or email us at [email protected]. Camp

tuition is $50 and includes snacks and enrichment items.

CHRISTIAN LITERACY needs some volunteers to ASSIST THE STAFF up in the "apartment" here at St. John's.

Forty years have been blessed with many "volunteer staff members". A few hours, one day per week is very much appreciated. "Dr. Bill" Kofmehl is

currently reaching out our literacy ministry to ELCA churches in synods outside our area. He could use help in researching such churches and building "contact

files". President Chris and Jennie are heavily involved in work with “church-based pre-schoolers", development of more English as a Second Language

programs for use with refugees in the US & by missionaries overseas in a number of countries, plus production (and mailing) of regular newslet-

ters. Christian Literacy is also helping Thrivent policy holders to develop "action teams" which can, with Thrivent "grants", aid their churches and organizations

like our ministry. Many possibilities for volunteers exist -- please give "Dr. Bill" Kofmehl a call (412-855-4079) to see what you would be able to do as a

volunteer. We have used reading specialists, professors, secretaries and even artists and computer experts for four decades. Calling our main phone

(412-364-3777) is always directed to President Chris and Jennie Ebner.

Christian Education Committee Opportunities

The Christian Education Committee is looking to fill several positions

for the 2016-17 School year.

Christian Education Committee Administrator -

This position is responsible for a few very important

tasks. Primarily, the CEC Administrator orders the

curriculum for the younger classes. We have the

curriculum supplies outlined and we just need to have

the order placed for delivery or pick up. Also, the CEC

Administrator will walk around to each class and

collect the class offerings and take attendance, each

Sunday morning. Finally, the CEC Administrator will attend the monthly

Christian Education Committee meeting and contribute ideas for classes,

Highland Halleluiah and other CEC programs. If you are not comfortable

talking in front of a classroom but would like to contribute in a meaningful

way educating the youth and adults of St. John’s this is a great opportunity.

NOTE: This position is being vacated by Eileen Karnavas. Eileen has

served on this committee for more years than I can remember, longer

than I have been a member. Her dedication and contributions were the

backbone of this committee. She will be dearly missed on this committee.

Thank you Eileen for your many years of faithful service.

Sunday School Teacher – We try to get as many people involved as possible

teaching each Sunday Morning. The more teachers we have in each classroom,

the lighter the effort from any one teacher. We are looking to expand our

teaching staff. Please consider volunteering to teach, substitute or help in a

classroom. Just let us know your availability and the age you feel most

comfortable teaching.

Christian Education Committee Member – We are always looking for people

with great ideas to help recommend curriculum and help with our efforts to

bring the word of God to our students of every age. We meet for 30 minutes

or so on the 2nd Sunday of every month right after the late service. We would

love to get some new member to share their ideas with us.

If you have an interest in any of these opportunities, please reach out to a volunteer.

You can email me at [email protected] or call and leave a message for me at

412.366.6238.

Thank you,

John Miller, Christian Education Committee Chairman for the entire committee.

The stewardship of our participation…now

that’s an odd one! But, ready or not, Spring

is in full swing. That means school concerts,

art shows, plays and graduations… picnics, parades,

baseball and family vacations. Can garage sales and

weddings be far behind?

All that participation requires a lot of planning. Sometimes

families have to “divide” and “conquer” with parents

attending different activities that are held on the same day

or evening. We’ve all been there, but the participation is

what really counts. Whether you’re toting a child to a band

practice, a friend to a doctor’s appointment, or a neighbor

to pick up a repaired automobile, there is opportunity for

caring and sharing. God puts us in the right place for the

right reason and He teaches us some valuable lessons:

Life is not about what you bought, but what you built—

Not what you got, but what you gave—

Not what you learned, but what you taught—

“QUOTE” of the Month

only what is good.”

Jewelry needed—sort out your boxes & drawers of real & costume jewelry for the Vintage room. (Jewelry boxes will be accepted)

Please…no exer-cycles, Christmas trees or plastic mugs (They don’t sell.) Donations can be dropped off downstairs in the back hall of the lower west wing, starting, but not before Saturday, May 21st. Fire Marshall Regulations do not allow accumulation in hallways, so please adhere to the drop off date! All items should be clean and in good working order. Call the office if you need someone to pick up your items. We need volunteers the morning of the event, but a large part of the work happens the week before the sale. From Tuesday, May 31st through Friday, June 3rd, sorting, organizing and pricing of the items will take place. You can come and go according to your schedule, all help is welcomed. If you can, fill out below& return to the office.
