Examine Query StudioQuery Studio is the ad hoc querying tool for ReportNet.Use Query Studio to:explore the corporate information that is available to you create ad hoc reports that can be viewed by otherscustomize ad hoc reports that have been savedcompare and analyze data

    *

Examine PackagesThe ad hoc reports that you create in Query Studio are based on packages published from Framework Manager.Packages use corporate business rules to define and group the data to be used for business reporting.

    *

Open Query StudioYou access the Query Studio tool from the Cognos Connection Web portal.

    *

Create an Ad Hoc ReportYou can create a new report by inserting items from a package into an empty report.

    *

Open Existing Ad Hoc ReportsYou can open an existing report to:view the most current data in the reportmake changes to reportthe reportuse it as the basis of a new

    *

Add Data to Ad Hoc ReportsYou can add data to an empty report by choosing the report items from the package. You can expand the scope of an existing report by inserting additional report items, or you can focus on specific data by removing unnecessary report items.

    *

Save Ad Hoc ReportsSave your reports to preserve any changes. You can also save a report using a different name or location to use it as the basis of a new report.

    *

View Data in Ad Hoc ReportsYou can open a report in Report Viewer to look at the most recent data from the data source. You can also look at the most recent data while you are editing the report in Query Studio.

    *

Print Ad Hoc ReportsPrint your report to obtain a paper copy. You can print a report directly from Query Studio, or from Cognos Connection.

    *

Display Data with List ReportsCreate a list report to show information in a list, such as products or customers.A list report shows data in rows and columns.

    *

Display Crosstab ReportsCreate a crosstab report to present data more clearly. You create a crosstab report by rotating the values in a list report to produce column headers.A crosstab report shows a summary value at the intersection of each row and column.

    *

Display Data Graphically with ChartsCreate a chart to present information graphically.Charts are useful for seeing patterns and trends in data.

    *

Specify a Chart TypeConsider what you want the chart to illustrate before you choose a chart type.

    *

Specify a Chart Type (Contd)Consider what you want the chart to illustrate before you choose a chart type.

    *

Enhance the Display of ChartsConsider what you want the chart to illustrate before you choose a chart variation.Use the stacked and 100% stacked variations to distinguish the value of each measure by a differently colored section in each stack.

In the 100% stacked variation, the top of each stack represents 100%.

    *

Filter Data in Ad Hoc ReportsCreate a filter to retrieve a subset of records in a report.Any data that does not meet the criteria of the filter is eliminated from the report.

    *

Add Calculated Data to Ad Hoc ReportsUse calculations to add data items to your report that do not exist in the underlying data source.

Calculation results are not stored in the underlying data source. Instead, Query Studio reruns the calculation each time you run the report.

The results of a calculation are always based on the most current data in the data source.

You can create calculations directly in an ad hoc report, or add predefined calculations from the package.

    *

Create Calculated ColumnsYou can add value to your reports by calculating the data in one or more columns.

    *

Run Ad Hoc ReportsRun a report to view the most recent data or report design.

    *

Specify Run OptionsYou can run your reports with all of the data, some of the data, or none of the data.

    *

Specify Properties for Ad Hoc ReportsIn Cognos Connection, you can specify unique properties for each ad hoc report that you create in Query Studio.

    *

View Ad Hoc Reports in PDF FormatYou can render ad hoc reports in Adobe Acrobat format before distribution and printing.

    *

View Ad Hoc Reports in HTML FormatYou can render ad hoc reports for the Web browser (HTML) for distribution over an intranet.

    *

Format Data in Ad Hoc ReportsYou can format qualitative and quantitative data in report columns.

    *

What is Newin Query Studio 8.4?

View Lineage Information for DataA data item's lineage information traces the item's metadata back through the package and the package's data sources. Viewing lineage information ensures that you add the correct data items to a report. For example, you can view the lineage information of a model calculation to see how it was created.

Enhanced Sorting and FilteringYou can add filters without adding a column. A context menu in the data tree allows for adding filters directly from the tree without first having to add the data item to the report. Text filters include multi-line text control. You can paste text from other applications into type-in filters. You can also use wildcards to define filters.

Extended Suppression CapabilitiesYou can suppress rows, columns, or rows and columns based on zero, null, divide by zero, and overflow values in reports created with relational, dimensionally-modeled relational, and OLAP data sources.

More User Preferences New preferences include the following:Data retrieval mode allows to run a report with all data, preview with limited data, or preview with no data.Default template for reports can be specified. You can select the type of filter dialog to use by default. These include picklist, type-in, or select with search.

Enhanced Drill-through CapabilitiesIn earlier versions of IBM Cognos 8, model-based drill-through supported only reports created in Analysis Studio, Query Studio, or Report Studio as targets. Other types of drill-through targets are now supported. For example, you can drill through to PowerPlay Studio reports saved in the content store, or to a PowerCube.

*In This session we are going to cover Query studio and its properties.Q 1) So What is Query studio ?A 1) Query Studio is the reporting tool for creating simple queries and reports in Cognos 8, the Web-based reporting solution. Q 2) What can you do in Query Studio ?A 2)1) View Data Connect to a data source to view data in a tree hierarchy. Expand the query subjects to see query item details.2) Create Reports Use the data source to create reports, which you can save and reuse. You can also use an existing report to create a new report.3) Change the Appearance of reports Improve the layout of your report. For example, you can create a chart, add a title, specify text and border styles, or reorder columns for easy comparison.4) Work with data in a report Use filters, summaries, and calculations to compare and analyze data. Drill up and drill down to view related information. To use Query Studio effectively, you should be familiar with the Web, as well as your organization's business and its data. You may also need to be familiar with other components of Cognos 8.*Query Studio differs from Report Studio in that it is designed for ad hoc reports that can be created on the fly. To me, Report Studio is where you can create very elaborate managed reports with more calculation/formatting options.Other things that RS has that QS doesnt:support for MULTIPLE QUERIES in the same report (i.e., you can pull data from multiple data sources in one report note that you couldnt do this in Impromptu) this seems to be the biggest differencemultiple page layoutscomplete ability to create free-form layouts through the use of HTML-like layout objectsdrill through capabilities from parent->child reportsconditional formattingsupport for browser-based interpreted languages (JavaScript, HTML) and technologies (ActiveX)advanced prompting (more powerful than PowerPrompts) seems to be a big part of their marketing spin you can create very thorough prompts witho
