International Bartenders Association

Dear Sir, Madam,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the International Bartenders Association, better known as the IBA.

The International Bartenders Association was established in 1951 and is registered today in Singapore under UEN number T06SS0054C. Thanks to its passion from the global bartending community, the IBA continues to expand, welcoming members from even more countries each year.IBA is proud to be the world’s premier (if not only) worldwide authority on professional bartending. Like every other sector today, bartending is also in a state of rapid and almost daily change. Even so, the basics remain the same: skill, quality and integrity. The IBA’s most valuable assets are our tens of thousands of members, bartenders all over the world.

Our organization continues to maintain and exceed the standards set by some of the world’s best beverage producing companies. Today we cooperate with a network of around 40 sponsors, most of them leaders in the global beverage industry. Our large group of international partners is known as IBA Associate Members. IBA is a worldwide non-profit society of members who are each registered associations in their own home countries. These members of IBA consist of 65 dedicated national bartender associations and guilds that identify and take advantage of development opportunities both in their native countries and in regional contexts. We also are a sustainable organization and enjoy long-term relationships with our commercial partners, who include sponsors, members, bartenders, flairtenders, mixologists and leaders in the international beverage and hospitality industry.

The reputation and professional strength that our organization is recognized for today is due to its capable and professional team of board members, who together share a wealth of experience in their regional market, as well as an excellent understanding of how to serve our sponsors to their complete satisfaction. In addition, the team’s innovative ideas help them create awareness and keep the IBA up to speed with developments and trends as they happen in the world of beverages and the hospitality industry.

We invite you to review the summary of our global network and activities in this presentation folder. IBA looks forward to embracing you as a country member or an IBA Associate Member, joining the colourful and exciting world of the World Cocktail Championships. Join IBA, unite and network with bartenders and other experts in the beverage industry, discover the many resources our network has to offer, and make our world yours. IBA: Shaking the World!

Yours faithfully,

Ron Busman IBA President

International Bartenders Association

On Wednesday 21 February 1951, a European Cocktail Competition was held at the Grand Hotel in Torquay, England. Competitors from Denmark, England, France, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland took part, and twenty-one bartenders were present at this historic occasion. Three days later, on 24 February, observers and presidents of bartenders’ guilds from seven European countries - DBL (Denmark), (G)ABF (France), AIBES, (Italy), NBC (Netherlands), SBG (Sweden), SBU (Switzerland) and UKBG (United Kingdom) - founded the International Bartenders Association (IBA).

The IBA launched the first International Cocktail Competition (ICC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on 7 & 8 October 1955. Giuseppe Neri, the bartender of the Excelsior Hotel in Palermo, Italy, became the first winner of ICC.

One of the most exciting of the IBA’s activities, the ICC started out as an annual competition, later becoming a biennial one. From 1973 until 1996 the ICC took place once every three years. From 1997 on the ICC was again organized on a yearly basis with three different categories: Before Dinner Cocktail, After Dinner Cocktail and Longdrink.

In 1999, the name International Cocktail Competition was changed to World Cocktail Competition (WCC). The year 2000 saw the introduction of a new phenomenon in the world of cocktails and mixology: Flairtending. Since that year, the WCC has run in two formats, Classic Mixing & Flairtending.

In 2005, a fifth category was introduced: Fancy Cocktail. Then, in 2008, a new set-up was initiated for WCC: the Open Category, in which contestants are free to choose and compete with cocktails from any of the four categories previously described.

By this time, the IBA Board was looking to re-orchestrate the WCC in order to boost a global cocktail culture and increase the visibility of its World Champions and of the sponsor brands. On the advice of its sponsor group, the IBA Associate Members, a

single name was created for the WCC Finals that would bring together Classics and Flair, transforming the Final into a one-day super-event, the Super Final. In addition to a new and exciting name, a new logo was also conceived so as to strengthen the importance of the event and create a brand.

From 2011, the competitions has been known as the World Cocktail Championships. It now consists of six individual competitions: Flairtending, Before Dinner Cocktail, Sparkling Cocktail, Fancy Cocktail, Longdrink and After Dinner Cocktail. After the Preliminary Finals, the winners of all six competitions compete in the Super Final to create the IBA Cocktail of the Year.

The winner of the WCC Super Final is invited to attend the Super Final of the next year’s WCC, with travel expenses fully paid and pocket money into the bargain. While there, the winner of the previous year’s Super Final shakes up the IBA Cocktail of the Year and toasts with the Welcome Cocktail.

• IBA Challenge Cup (Team Prize)• IBA Art Deco Trophy, for the best cocktail

decoration and/or cocktail garnish• IBA Eagle Reward, for the best overall performance

It is not every day you will come across 500 of the world’s finest bartenders in one room, let alone in one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. But in Cape Town, South Africa, representatives from 62 countries across the globe gathered to show off their mixing, shaking and flairing skills at the 40th annual International Bartenders’ Association (IBA) World Cocktail Championships.

If ever there was proof that the ladies can shake it as well - if not better - than male bartenders, it was at the week-long competition. Slovakia’s Jana Karkusova (the middle lady pictured below), a hospitality teacher for 15-18 year olds, was crowned the 2014 winner, succeeding last year’s female victor, Greta Grönholm, who represented Finland.

In fact, her victorious drink, Geisha, was inspired by “what it is to be a woman”, albeit in a stereotypical sense - sweet, fruity, pink and delicate.

Comprised of Havana Club Añejo 3 Años, lychee liqueur, almond syrup, toffee nut syrup, cranberry juice and lime juice the drink was described by judges as a “balanced, indulgent, fruity delight”, which was more than enough to secure Karkusova the 2014 title.

In addition to the honour and glory associated with winning, Ivanov will be much sought after by other member countries of the International Bartenders Association and brands from the IBA Associate Members to demonstrate his winning cocktail Grand Horizon and share his winning secrets with young bartenders all over the world.

Last year’s World Cocktail Championships were more spectacular than ever. For the International Bartenders Association’s 65th Congress & World Cocktail Championships (WCC), more than 1,000 bartenders, brand representatives and industry leaders gathered at Tokyo’s luxurious Imperial Hotel - fittingly situated in the heart of the city’s thriving bar district, Ginza.Over the course of six days from 16 to 21 October, guests networked, attended educational masterclasses and competed in one of the biggest and most hotly anticipated cocktail competitions of 2016. Held in Tokyo fort he first time since 1996, this year’s WCC saw its host country triumph, with Kyoto-based bartender Kenji Tsubokura crowned overall winner of the championships. However, his victory did not come easy. Bartenders from more than 65 countries who won regional heats held by their individual IBA guilds went head-to-head in six competitive rounds in Tokyo - one Flairtending Competition and five Classic Mixing Competitions. In total, more than 100 of the world’s most accomplished bartenders took part in the championships.Tsubokura, who is owner and chief bartender at the renowned Kyoto bar Rocking Chair, impressed with his short drink serve, The Best Scene, a mixture

Selected by host guild DBL (Denmark) as an original and special exhibition venue to host the IBA World Cocktail Championhsips 2017, Øksnehallen is one of Copenhagen’s biggest exhibition halls and the most amazing venue in the Danish capital. Øksnehallen is a stunning building, situated in the heart of the lively old meat district in the centre of Copenhagen. With its 5,000 square meters, Øksnehallen is used for a wide array of events, including art exhibitions, conferences, trade fairs, product presentations, fashion shows as well as dinners and parties.

Set to take place from 15-19 October 2017, the annual World Cocktail Championships - or WCC - is the pinnacle of the competitive bartending calendar. To decide which individuals will compete, guilds - the IBA member associations in each country - test their participants by way of preliminary heats. Those victorious, usually two from each guild, are then put through to the World Cocktail Championships, this year held in the capital of Danmark, Copenhagen.

Hundreds are expected to gather at Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, Copenhagen (IBA Associate Members, board, guild-presidents and delegates) and the DGI-byens Hotel (competitors), from guilds as far flung as Argentina and Armenia, to South Africa and Taiwan, to compete in six internationla competitions: Flairtending, Before Dinner Cocktail, Sparkling Cocktail, Short Drink, Long Drink, Bartenders Choice and After Dinner Cocktail. The winners of the Classic Mixing Competitions and the Flairtending Competition will compete in the WCC Super Final for the ‘IBA World Bartender of the Year’ award.

The IBA itself was formed in 1951, and today comprimises of 65 dedicated national bartender associations and guilds. And the championships have developed too - the first International Cocktail Competition was held in 1955 in Amsterdam. The event continued to grow in size and stature and became known as the World Cocktail Competition in 1999, before adopting the World Cocktail Championships name in 2011. Today, the event is not only an insulator contest for members; in 2017 the event will solidify its status as a spectator event. The Danish National Cocktail Competition will place in one half of Øksnehallen as part of the 1st Copenhagen Bar Show, with visitors invited to come and watch both the Danish nationals as well as the World Cocktail Championhips. The flamboyant Flairtending Competition is likely to be an audience favorite: 4000 visitors are to be expected on both days of the event, both from local as well as international origin.

We are looking forward to you coming here in October. As you may know, Denmark is well known for its gastronomic experiences and for creating a whole new genre in cooking called ‘The Nordic Kitchen’. We hope that your upcoming visit will inspire the world’s leading bartenders and stimulate them to look into what ‘The Nordic Kitchen’ is all about, and find inspiration from this unique gastronomic genre for their creations. In Danish we have a word, which there is no direct translation for, namely; ‘hygge’. The meaning of the word is one of the essential parts of why we are voted the happiest nation year after year. In order to attempt to explain the phenomenon ‘hygge’ you have to think about the feeling you have inside, when you are with your closest family and friends at Christmas and everything is calm and cosy - at this point you are truly enjoying yourself and completely relaxed. This is one of the key ingredients during your visit to Copenhagen in October, as we will show you some of the most fantastic sites the city has to offer.

There will be a few changes for this year’s World Cocktail Championships (WCC). The WCC is moving into an offsite venue outside the hotel you will be staying at. This gives us the opportunity to create what we have called “The World Cocktail Championships Village” - which will contain the main venue for the WCC, a Nordic beverage trade fair, an open area with local street-art and several food vendors, a restaurant which is exclusively open for participants of WCC, a cool hangout area for all competitors and practice facilities for the flair tending competitors. The focus of the competition will switch to the experience of participating as a spectator, meaning that we are working on how to make the competition more exciting to watch for the audience in the venue, but also on how the viewers at home tuning into the live steam will experience it. Therefore we are working on the concept of setting up the competition as a TV production, so there will be a minimal of breaks, where there is no entertainment on stage for the audience during the competition. The WCC has previously had two presenters on stage during the whole event, where we instead will have at least 5 presenters on the floor and stage at different locations - this year we are introducing an analyst desk, where two experts will show replays of the heats and discussing the technical aspects of the competition. Furthermore there will also be a presenter on the floor interviewing not only the competitors, but also the sponsors, which have the opportunity to hold mini master classes, and introduce their products to audience and viewers - these segments will be broadcasted on both the big screens at the venue, and the live stream that will be broadcasted worldwide. At the competition venue we are attempting to create an atmosphere that reflects the experience of being in a bar, so we have created two raised platforms, with a total of 10 Corporate Bars for our Platinum Associate Members, with a total of over 100 seats at the bar with prime viewing of the competition. For the spectators on site we have decided to give focus on taste at this year’s WCC. After each participant in the Classic Cocktail Competitions has been on stage competing, they will be invited to a bar off stage, to once again mix their cocktail, to create an open tasting of the cocktail. We believe this will give you the opportunity to not only taste what is being created on stage, but also share knowledge amongst each other and open up the discussions on inspiration sources and experiences.

Once again we look forward to seeing you in Copenhagen in October!

Best regards,

Kevin William GosneyProject Manager
