Message from Beth Knowles - International Director Welcome to our first newsletter as Ara! The brand launch for the merger of our two institutes in to Ara Institute of Canterbury has gone well. We now have two campus options for international students – Timaru and Christchurch. Both locations have plenty to offer students wishing to experience life and study in New Zealand. Our international student numbers are up 33% on the same time last year so we are delighted that our growth is continuing from last year. Subsequently we have been aware that our application processing times have not been as fast as you expect. Please be reassured that we have made changes to increase efficiency including employing some additional staff, staff training, changes to process, and the implementation of an on-line application process. The impact of these changes is of course not immediate but we expect our turnaround times to improve. Close off dates for applications is another measure we are introducing to ensure our Admissions team are able to assist you as soon as possible. Please note the following close dates for semester 2 applications: If you have late applications for consideration please check with your Market Sector Manager to see if a late application is likely to be accepted. They will be pleased to advise you if places are still available or if you should defer to the following intake. Applications for 2017 will open on 1 September 2016. Thank you very much for your continued support of Ara and we hope you enjoy the positive news stories in our l atest newsletter. Welcome to our first newsletter as Ara!

The brand launch for the merger of our two institutes in to Ara Institute of

Canterbury has gone well. We now have two campus options for international

students – Timaru and Christchurch. Both locations have plenty to offer students wishing to

experience life and study in New Zealand.

Our international student numbers are up 33% on the same time last year so we are delighted that our growth is

continuing from last year. Subsequently we have been aware that our application processing times have not been

as fast as you expect. Please be reassured that we have made changes to increase efficiency including employing

some additional staff, staff training, changes to process, and the implementation of an on-line application

process. The impact of these changes is of course not immediate but we expect our turnaround times to

improve. Close off dates for applications is another measure we are introducing to ensure our Admissions team

are able to assist you as soon as possible. Please note the following close dates for semester 2 applications:

If you have late applications for consideration please check with your Market Sector Manager to see if a late

application is likely to be accepted. They will be pleased to advise you if places are still available or if you should

defer to the following intake. Applications for 2017 will open on 1 September 2016.

Thank you very much for your continued support of Ara and we hope you enjoy the positive news stories in our l

CPIT Aoraki has a new name: Ara

We’re very excited to present to you our new name - Ara Insti-

tute of Canterbury.

Ara, meaning arise or pathway in te Reo Māori, is the ambi-

tious next stage in the history of CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic

after the two institutes received ministerial approval to formally

join together this year to provide more flexible and innovative

vocational training to the region.

Underpinning the new institute's name is the Māori phrase Ara

rau, taumata rau, meaning many pathways, many opportuni-

ties, which embodies the essence of Ara. This phrase reflects

an approach that will accommodate and nurture all types of

learners to follow the best pathway to reach their goals.

Across Canterbury and Waitaki, Ara offers access to industry

relevant foundational certificates, diplomas, degrees and post

graduate diplomas with strategies developed specifically to

engage and support youth, Māori and Pasifika, professionals

who need to upskill and international students.

The bold Ara logo represents the upward journey of learning,

while also drawing inspiration from Māori tukutuku panelling,

which was traditionally used to decorate meeting houses.

Ara Hosts Polish Ambassador

We recently hosted the Polish Ambassador,

Mr Zbigniew Gniatkowski and Honorary Consul,

Mrs Winsome Dormer at Ara Institute of

Canterbury. The International team welcomed

the opportunity to discuss the development of

educational relationships between Poland and

New Zealand.

Ara Students supporting those affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake

We send our sympathies to Kumamoto where they suffered a terrible

earthquake. We have had exchange students from Kumamoto

Gakuen University in the past and will continue to support them as

they recover.

Manabu Koga, one of our business students studying a Bachelor of

Applied Management put his skills and training to good use in

organizing a donation stand to collect donations to send back to his

home country. With the support of his peers and Ara staff around

$1,000 was collected in early May and sent to charities working in

Kumamoto to provide relief aid.

We’re very proud to have been able to support this effort and wish

Manabu well for all for his studies and future endeavors.

Business students get

the Jaipuria treatment

A group of six Ara

business management

students have had a

taste of the dynamic

world of business in

India, with the support of

the Ara Foundation.

The two week study tour

was hosted by the

Jaipuria Institute of

Management, one of the

top private business

management schools in India, located near the country's capital, New Delhi.

Ara student Matthew McPherson who is studying toward a Bachelor of Applied

Management majoring in marketing and project management said he made lots

of connections and friends during the trip.

"I also learnt about Indian culture as the students we met were from a number of

different regions of India and we could discuss the cultural differences between

the regions. By seeing the wealth gap in India between rich and poor it helped

me to understand the problem and see the opportunities that exist for businesses

to show social responsibility and to help alleviate the poverty that so many

people face today," Matthew McPherson said.
