What does the future hold?JOYCE WELLS

m y presidency w as over and I responded, “ I ’ve been too busy to th ink about it.”

I can tell you that 1 am happy that I w o n ’t have to m eet so m any deadlines. A nd I ’ve en ­joyed traveling to all the Section m eetings — being w ith you and w orking for you— as w ell as w ith o ther aviation organizations.

T hough the paperw ork is challeng ing , dea l­ing w ith it is nevertheless a chore— and stacks o f it now fill nearly four file boxes. (I w onder if the R esource C en ter at H eadquarters really w ants all these le tte rs .. .som e w ill undoubtedly m ake very in teresting read ing to m em bers and researchers in 50 years.)

I have learned that being p residen t is a fu ll-tim e and d em and­ing job— as m y vo lun teer/conscrip ted adm in istra tive assistan t w ill verify. He has answ ered the phone, cop ied faxes and e-m ail, been m y com puter guru and taken care o f the hom e front. In the past tw o years, I have spent a total o f about 163 days aw ay from hom e, including 36 w eekends!

W hat does the fu tu re hold? Your B oard o f D irectors and C oun­cil o f G overnors have spent long hours pu tting together a long- range plan from inform ation com piled from survey form s m any o f you returned.

This is not a one-tim e effort. I t’s a plan that m ust be an on ­going one, periodically revised in o rder to perpetuate T he 99s.

O ne suggestion proposed and vo iced by m any 99s p residen ts is to have a paid, appoin ted C E O /presiden t, like m any o f the o ther aviation organizations do. I ag reed to that idea before I becam e presiden t, and I now support the concep t even m ore as I leave the office.

Leaders o f o ther o rganizations have pointed out to m e num erous tim es that they lose con ti­nuity in con tac ts w ith us because w e change p residen ts every tw o years and they m ust ad ­ju s t to new faces and personalities. M any tim es, the co n tac t is d ro p p ed becau se the e lec ted p residen t holds dow n a pay ing position and cannot take the tim e aw ay from her work to ful­fill the duties required by the office o f president.

A fu ll-tim e p res iden t w ou ld co n tinue to an sw er to the B oard o f D irectors and w ould have the skills necessary for the jo b , w hich an elected president doesn ’t alw ays have. I believe th is is an area that should be seriously evalu ­a ted in the L ong-R ange P lanning process.

D uring m y travels these past tw o years I have v isited w ith m em bers o f m any C hapters

and Sections and read num erous C hap ter new sletters and I have no ticed that m any C hapters are experiencing difficulty in locat­ing m em bers to run for office. T hat is a lso occurring at the top level. O ften , a m em ber is ta lked into taking an office ju s t to fill it, and sufficient considera tion is not g iven as to w hether she has the necessary skills to m eet the dem ands o f the position.

H ere w e are, a m inority segm ent o f the p ilo t population , v iew ed as p rogressive and brave in the eyes o f o thers, but som e­tim es reluctant to be p rogressive in ou r ow n organization .

H ow ever, as I pass the gavel on to the next presiden t, I w ant you to know that I rem ain panglossian (extrem ely optim istic) about the future o f T he 99s. A nd I tru ly believe that “w hen you cease to m ake a con tribu tion , you begin to d ie .”

Louise Thaden CorrectionThis letter is to correct the ar­

ticle that appeared in the May/June 1996 issue of the International Women Pilots magazine. When I scanned what was going to be in the issue and saw that on page 14 there w as an a rtic le en titled "Jacqueline Cochran commemo­rative stam p," I thought — hot dog! They're going to correct that Postal Service misinformation that Cochran was the first woman to win the Bendix Trophy! Darn near had a barbed-wire tail-cat fit when I read the SAME misinformation repeated— of all places— in the 99s magazine.

brother Bill and myself all wrote to the Deputy Postmaster General to set HIM straight. Now we just need to get it straight with the 99s!

In case you aren't aware of the Staggerwing Beech Commemora­tive Tour honoring Louise Thaden and the 60th anniversary win of the Bendix in a Staggerwing, I am enclosing a brochure. The termi­nus of the tour is coordinated with the start of the Staggerwing Mu­seum Foundation, Inc., annual convention being held in San Di­ego, Calif. Brother Bill has really worked hard for about five years putting all this together, and it should be a grand event. Now, isn’t it ironic that here is a big affair

Evelyn Sharp correctionsI read the article on page 21 of

the May/June issue on Evelyn Sharp Day. I just talked to Nancy Crews. She was at the event hon­oring Sharp. She was the WASP who accompanied Sharp’s body home. Just want to mention that Sharp was flying a P-38 twin en­gine fighter. P-51 is a single en­gine airplane. — Teresa James, Florida G ulf Stream Chapter

In the M ay-June issue, the sto ry on Evelyn Sharp read “ ...when the P-51 she was ferry­ing lost its right engine..." The North American P -51 Mustang was a single engine fighter. Evelyn

ARC Memories...My journal brings back the adrenaline, the smiles, the anxieties of

another Air Race Classic at another time, before GPS, as I prepare for this year’s great race.

First race day: The race begins early in the morning, with breakfast and a weather briefing. The crew of volunteers helped push us out onto the ramp, then we lined up on both sides of the runway and were flagged off one at a time. The guy motioning us onto the runway held up a teeny little card that said "Good luck!”

The flight to Winslow was lovely— quite a contrast to the turbu­lence we had experienced on the way west— and welcome. Had a chance to see what we couldn't see before. Landing at Winslow was so-s but what an experience the fly-by was!

Third race day: The weather man lied. When we woke up, looked outside and saw gray clouds coming in, we were on our way to the airport within a half hour. Performed the regular pre­flight, of course, and we were off, probably the last racers out for hours.

Tl O FLY IN T H E AIR R A C E C lassic is to be a part o f a historical trad ition that began w ith som e o f the m ost

w ell-know n fem ale aviators. The first one, the W o m en ’s A ir D erby, w as flo w n in 1929. C on testan ts in that race included Pancho B arnes, A m elia E arhart, B lanche N oyes, L ouise T haden and B obbi T rout, to nam e a few.

For som e years, the 99s held a T rans­con tinen tal A ir R ace, becom ing the All W om an T ranscontinen tal A ir R ace Inc. in 1950. A lthough som e referred to th is race as the AW TAR, o thers called it the "P o w ­der P uff D erby,” a nam e som e th ink w as g iv en it by hum orist W ill R ogers. T he AW TAR continued until 1976 w hen the nonprofit organization running the race was dissolved.

A ir racing, how ever, could not dissolve. Too m any w om en— and aviation itself— had gained too m uch m om entum to stop. W ith the b lessing and assistance o f B oard m em bers in the o ld organ ization , a new organization w as created so that a ir rac ­ing could continue. T hat organ ization , the A ir R ace C lassic, w as created in 1977 and continues today w ith tw o o f the orig inal B oard m em bers still involved w ith it and serving on the B oard.

As in m any pioneering endeavors, the AW TAR spaw ned a num ber o f procedures that w e live w ith today. F or exam ple, the airplanes inspected at the start w ere som e­tim es found in “care less” condition . P a­pers and insurance po lic ies w ere no t in order, etc. A s a result, the FAA required m ore rigid inspection requirem ents on a regular basis o f all airplanes.

In ano ther instance, since racers often

clim bed as h igh as 20 ,000 feet to take ad ­vantage o f good ta ilw inds and c lear skies, the rules required the use o f oxygen above 10,000 feet. T he FAA follow ed suit and m ade it a requ irem en t fo r all airplanes.

Breaking the bonds of earth.R acers fly to p laces they w ould never

visit on their ow n, and face challenges they probab ly w ould no t experience in the ir norm al p leasu re flights. O ver the years, the A ir R ace C lassic has been to 39 states. T hose that still have a stop in their state a re M aine , N ew H am p sh ire , V erm ont, C o n n ec ticu t, M assach u se tts , M ary land , D elaw are, V irginia, Louisiana, H awaii and A laska.

W esterners ex p erien ce the hazy, ho t and hum id E astern states w ith their m any little tow ns and lakes. E asterners experi­ence the w ide-open spaces, early afternoon tu r b u le n c e an d m ile s b e tw e e n c h e c k points.

M oun ta in s, passes, rid g es and h igh- density a ltitude present their challenges to every p ilo t, regard less o f experience. But m ost o f all, the beauty o f the U nited States as seen from the a ir at low altitudes is a spectacle to hold in o n e ’s m em ory forever.

T here com es a tim e in every race in som e leg w hen the p lane is trim m ed, the heading is right, the altitude has been se­lected w hen th e re ’s a chance to relax fo r a few m om ents and look out the w indow at w hat is passing below. We do indeed travel “ from the m ountains, to the prairies, to the ocean w hite w ith fo a m ...”

What we saw was ominous— a gray canopy or awning just being pulled across the sky. Lightning to our left and we could see underneath to brightness about 10 miles out. We did beat it and we were legal, but woe to anyone who was trying to land. Just five minutes later would have been too late.

Mt. Vernon, III., was beautifully clear, relatively speaking, and a challenging leg to navigate. No VORs to guide us, so we just had to get it right and fly the heading!

York at last. I made a screaming dive for a finish, bringing old But­tercup almost to red line to get down to the required altitude to the fly­by. Just in the nick of tim e....

Went out to the airplane to check the oil and pack a bit. Felt good to smell her again. I wonder if she felt like a race plane and liked the

attention she got? Now, like Cinderella, she goes back to be­ing “a plane.”

And I wonder— why do women put themselves and their planes through this time after time? Why come back?

Safety is a first concern . R acers m ust abide by FAA rules, in addition to the ARC rules. P lanning for the race m ust take into account departure and arrival tim es to en ­sure that p ilo ts m eet the sunrise-to-sunset fly ing requirem ents: they m ust consider the dura tion o f the flight to be sure there is at least 30 m inutes o f fuel left upon ar­rival at the destination: and a know ledge o f w eight and balance is required.

In the air, these m others, g randm oth­ers, single w om en, professional and p lea­sure p ilo ts, farm ers, doctors, eng ineers, m anagers, stock brokers, accountants, real estate brokers, college students and hom e­m akers all becom e PILO TS. All m ust have n a v ig a t io n an d p ilo tin g sk i l ls , an d a know ledge o f their planes, them selves and the weather. R oyce C liffo rd and Jacqueline S iegel, stunned and ecstatic about their first tim e to fin ish in the Top Ten, com m ented about the necessity for team w ork. A lthough they said that the ir w in w as “due to p lanned luck— you do your best and the rest is luck, like life ,” they believe that the ir ability to stay focused th roughout the race con trib ­u ted to their success.

V eteran racer M ardell H askins, Inland C alifo rn ia C hapter, com m ented that w ith som e o f the top racers ou t o f the com peti­tion this year, there w ere several slots open for new com ers. She a lso observed that since there w as no s ig n ifican t w eather a long the route, superio r p lanes and supe­rio r p ilo ting determ ined the w inners.

She offered this advice to p ilo ts con ­sidering en tering the A R C next year from B oise, Idaho, to K noxville, Tenn. “A lw ays keep go ing as if y o u ’re w inning, regard ­less o f how badly you think yo u ’re doing. You d o n ’t know how anyone else is doing.”

A ir Race President Pauline G lasson flew this race w ith one o f her students as copilot and one as a passenger. Pauline has flown in 24 o f the 29 Pow der Puff D erbies and in all o f the A ir Race Classics. She has had a greater variety o f copilots than any other race pilot. O ver 100 avid racers hoped lady luck w ould be on their side— or at least in their cockpit as they prepared to em bark on an all w om en’s cross-country air race. T he A ir R ace C lassic (A R C ) is a race steeped in tradition w hose orig in can be traced back to the 1920s w ith h istoric aviators like A m e lia E a rh a r t . F o rm e r ly k n o w n as th e P o w d e r P u f f D erby , it is a race fo r s to ck , fixed-w ing aircraft w hich m ust be flow n during daylight hours and u n d e r v isu a l f lig h t ru le s (V FR ).

This y ea r’s race route o f m ore than 2 ,300 m iles w as unique in that the 50 team s o f racers took o ff from E m b ry -R id d le A e ro ­n au tica l U n iv e rs ity ’s w este rn cam pus in the m ile-high city o f Prescott, A riz., and crossed the fin ish line at E m bry -R idd le ’s eastern cam pus in D aytona B each, Fla.

E m bry-R iddle is the first organization in A R C history to spon­

sor the race from start to finish. E m bry-R iddle had a dual pur­pose in sponsoring th is event, to com m em orate the 70th ann i­versary o f the university and to prom ote aw areness o f aviation as a ca reer choice fo r w om en. T he aviation field is w ide open fo r ded ica ted fem ales and, a lthough the num ber o f w om en stu­den ts at E m bry-R iddle has been stead ily increasing in recent years, fem ale enro llm ent is only 16 percent.

C ross-country a ir racing has cap tu red the im ag ination o f a g row ing segm ent o f the popu­lation. F lying a transcontinental race is the u ltim ate test o f aero­nautical skill and the racers are alw ays eager to test their abili­ties and a ircraft in the intense c o m p e tit io n . our navigation light bulbs needed to be replaced. We w ere able to take care o f those prob lem s and fin ish o u r p re-race inspection in good tim e. (A ll race aircraft are inspected before the race to m ake sure they have not v io lated A R C rules.)

Pre-race activitiesSeveral events had been organized by the E m bry-R iddle spon­

sors in P rescott to m ake sure the racers had a good tim e and en joyed the special locale and attractions o f P rescott. T hese in­cluded a W estern-style w elcom e barbecue on the E m bry-R iddle cam pus, a trip to the beautifu l red rock area o f Sedona, and a w alk ing tou r o f h is to ric dow n to w n P resco tt w ith its Sharlot Hall M useum .

H eld in the h isto ric St. M ichae l’s H otel, a w onderful d inner w as accom panied by a speech from B arbara M organ, C hrista M c A u lif fe ’s su c c e s s o r as N A S A ’s Teacher in Space candidate, w ho talked ab o u t the c h a lle n g e s o f m o tiv a tin g A m e ric a ’s y o u th w ith av ia tio n and aerospace scenarios. W hat a w onder­

ful m otivator she is! She m ade us all w ish w e w ere back in school w ith her as our teacher.

T he day before the race w as spent a ttend ing several m anda­tory m eetings, going over the race route in detail, d iscussing key safety aspects, and hearing about the w eather w e expected to encoun te r during the course o f the race. T here w as even a spe­cial m eeting fo r those racers w ho had never flow n the A RC be­fore, as it presents m any unique challenges even above norm al a ir racing . By the end o f the day, w e all felt physically and em o­tionally charged and ready to begin.

Day 1 - Departing Prescott, June 20A s usual, racing is an early m orn ing activity. T he pre-takeoff

b reakfast began at 6 a.m . T he break­fast w as excellen t and helped to w ake everyone up fo r the first day o f racing. We shared o u r table w ith som e o f our friends from C alifo rn ia w ho cam e to see the race start, as well as the honor­ary starter, pilot Wally Funk (w ho had once been tested to be a M ercury as­tronaut, before N A SA decided against w om en astronauts in those early days).

thereafter, w ith, o f course, the usual m ountain turbulence.

By 7:15, w e w ere all at the airport getting ready to go. We had received a fax package from our w eather team in D aytona, an E m bry- R iddle m eteoro logy class that w as providing our w eather data and recom m endations as part o f the final exam fo r the ir course. We studied it in tensely and agreed w ith the recom m enda­tions to “go h igh .”

The race takeoffs started on tim e at 8 a.m .Since the first race takeo ff is in o rder o f race num ber and we w ere in the m iddle o f the pack (No. 31), we took o ff at about 8 :30 a.m . D e­partures w ere very sm ooth , and w e had an ex ­citing 160-degree turnout after passing the tim ­ing line for our on-course heading to D urango,C olo. The w inds w ere p red icted to be reason­ably good at altitude, and w e flew m ost o f the leg at about 12,000 feet.

O ur backseat p ilo t-passenger, an E m bry- R iddle student w hom w e had brought along for the experience, had never flow n in a sm all plane out w est before. She really en joyed the beautifu l red rock m ountain scenery, a lthough the light tu rbu­lence w as a bit stressfu l in the back seat. C lo ser to the peaks, we passed several o ther race p lanes fly ing low er than w e w ere and we w ondered how m uch tu rbu lence they w ere feeling . T he fly ­by at D urango w as very sm ooth; we arrived w ith no traffic co n ­flicts and w ere cleared to land w ith no delays.

We tried fo r a fairly qu ick tu rnaround at D urango , but w ith all the race traffic and fire-figh ting aircraft, it w as about an hour before we got o ff again. W henever w e tried to con tac t g round contro l, they requested w e call back in five, 10, 15 m inutes. We finally w ere able to depart, but w e w ere requested to do a right 270-degree turn before head ing on course.

T his leg w as even bum pier, as w e d id n ’t fly qu ite so h igh and the afternoon heat added therm al lift to the norm al m ountain a irsw irls. O ur passenger w as feeling the effects, so w e allow ed h er to com e to the front o f the a ircraft and handle the con tro ls for a w hile. T he flight w as beautifu l. We passed o ver several m esas and reservoirs on the N avajo reservations. We saw only one aircraft on this leg.

The fly-by at R osw ell, N .M ., w as fun as w e observed F - I l l s in the pattern but the g round tem peratu re w as hot, hot, hot. The tem perature w as 104 F and a lthough it w as a very dry heat (the W eather C hannel said the hum id ity w as only 5 percen t), it w as very tiring. M ost racers w ere happy to catch the ir breath and drink lots and lots o f flu ids, but som e hurried th rough w eather updates and w ent back out fo r the nex t leg.

Fortunately, ou r W eather Serv ice support team to ld us to hold for the day, w hich w e w ere happy to do. W hile w e w ere w aiting for a ride to ou r hotel, one o f the race p lanes had an eng ine fire during restart, bu t fo rtunate ly no one w as hurt. T he racers in that p lane w ere able to catch a ride w ith ano ther team and continued through to race end.

Day 2 - Departing Roswell, N.M.O ur alarm w oke us at 5 a.m . (after losing an hou r the p rev i­

ous day) fo r departure to the airport at 5:30. Fortunately , w e had

found a sm all g rocery store the night before, as getting breakfast so early is very d ifficult. We w ere second on the takeoff list as w e w ere the second plane into R osw ell the day before that had stayed overnight. T he F -l 1 Is w eren ’t out that early so depar­tures w ere sm ooth and we had a good leg to the K ickapoo D ow n­tow n A irport in W ichita Falls, Texas.

T he course w as still m ostly over desert, a lthough we had passed the last o f the m ountains, and the w eather continued to be excellen t. It w as the ho ttest day o f the year so far in W ichita Falls and it w as w onderfu l to get out o f the airp lanes. We were m et by the ground team w ith glasses o f ice w ater for all three o f us.

W e contac ted the w eather team as soon as we w ere on the g round and they p red icted better w inds the next day, so we d e ­cided to spend the n ight in W ichita Falls. H ow ever, w e spent several m ore hours at the airport, en joy ing the w onderful food and beverages provided by the local N inety-N ines C hapter, chat­ting w ith o ther racers w ho had m ade the sam e decisions, and w atch ing carefu lly w hich racers decided to continue on to the next stop.

A num ber o f E m bry-R iddle a lum ni had been able to com e to the K ickapoo A irport to help support the racers. It w as w onder­ful to see o u r student racers in teract w ith these alum ni, starting the ir life-long career and form ing new friendships.

Day 3 - Departing W ichita Falls, TexasA gain , w e had an early m orn ing start a fter losing another

hour, and this tim e w e w ere the first in the departu re sequence. T h is w as our busiest day since our w eather team had asked us to fly as far as we could . We did three legs this day. The first leg, from W ichita Falls to C onw ay, A rk., w as sm ooth and we finally started seeing green terrain beneath us as w e traveled about 2,000 feet over the ground.

T he arrival and subsequent departu re at C onw ay w as excit­ing as there w as no tax iw ay parallel to the arrival runw ay. This m eant that m ost a ircraft had to back taxi on the runw ay to get to an in tersecting tax iw ay in o rder to reach the parking area, and

no a irc ra ft co u ld tak e o ff o r land w hile the back taxi w as in progress.

A dd itionally , there w as no fuel truck; aircraft had to taxi to a fuel pum p to get gas, instead o f being able to park and have the fuel com e to them . T his caused a trem endous traf­fic jam so m aneuvering around w as a bit tricky.

We w ere th e f i rs t to a r r iv e in C onw ay that day, so ou r arrival w as no trouble, but by the tim e we w anted to leave , the re w ere severa l o th e r planes w aiting to go and m any m ore com ing in. W hat w ith the takeoffs, landings and fly-bys all over the sam e runw ay, it w as quite chao tic fo r a w hile.

Fortunately, the professionalism o f these w om en pilots p re ­vailed and all a ir opera tions w ere very orderly. E veryone rea l­ized that these snarls are typical in air racing and w as able to m aintain their patience and po ise in spite o f the delays.

The second leg o f the day took us to O w ensboro , Ky. C on tin ­ued c lea r skies and hot tem pera tu res fo llow ed us there. We w ere m et w ith sandw iches and co ld drinks and a very supportive ground team , again including som e E m bry-R iddle alum ni as well as local N inety-N ines.

A lthough w e w ere try ing again for a very quick tu rnaround , w hen w e tried to start the airp lane, all we go t w as a w hirring sound— no p ropeller sp inning, no eng ine roaring to life. F o rtu ­nately, it w as only a stuck B endix gear on the starter m echanism and a little lubrication soon had us underw ay again.

Fortunately, no thunderstorm s appeared along our course and, a lthough there w as som e haze, our good w eather held again. T his leg saw us fly ing a few thousand feet over ro lling hills, forests and verdant farm land. We d id our fly-by and landed at A thens, G a„ and w ere very happy to hear that the w eather in D aytona B each w as terrib le, and w e co u ld n ’t go any fu rther that day. T hree race legs in the heat and hum id ity had really w orn us out and the cool hotel room s that n ight w ere heavenly. We w ere in bed by nine.

Day 4 - Departing A thens, Ga., June 23W ith only one leg left, w e w ere not as hurried as in the last

tw o days. A lthough today is the arrival dead line, w e have until 5 p.m . and less than tw o hours o f fly ing tim e to o u r destination . A gain, we had lost an hour, but w e w ere no longer first on the takeoff list and experienced racers p red ic ted that g round fog w ould delay our departure , so w e slept in a bit (5 :30 a.m .) and finally had a real b reakfast before head ing out to the a irport and w aiting for the fog to lift.

It finally did around 8:15 and we w ere out as soon as possib le so we could get to D aytona B each before the thunderstorm s built there, as they do m ost afternoons. T he haze w as the w orst on this leg, but we saw not a c loud in the sky and m ade our best tim e on this leg.

We had a great w elcom e at D aytona B each and w ere very happy to have successfu lly com pleted the race. It tu rned out that thunderstorm s never did build that day, w hich w as very n ice for the few planes w ho had been held up by m echanical problem s and did not arrive until ju s t before dead line.

Post-race activitiesBy arriv ing in D aytona at 10:30 a.m ., w e had the rest o f the

day to relax and get organized. A lthough w e stayed at m y hom e, since I live in D aytona B each, w e w ent to the ra ce rs’ hotel, the

A dam ’s M ark, to retrieve our luggage w hich had been shipped ahead from Prescott. Show ers and laundry were the first o rder o f business, then we spent the rest o f the day relaxing and preparing for the evening’s festivities.

A trop ical recep tion w as p lanned by our E m bry-R idd le hosts in one o f the ir new facilities, the L ehm an E n­g in ee rin g and T echno logy C enter. W hen w e arrived that evening , the bu ild ing had been transform ed into a trop ical parad ise , w ith w onderful decorations and a steel drum band.

E m bry-R iddle had several labs in the facility open for d isplays to show the racers that it is not ju s t a flight school, but a full- service university offering a w ide varie ty o f degrees in aviation and aerospace. T he ir ingenuity and a tten tion to detail certain ly paid o ff that evening. T here w ere m any com m ents that this w as the best w elcom e recep tion in the h istory o f the a ir race.

A day of relaxationT uesday w as a day fo r the racers to relax w hile the race com ­

m ittee com puted the scores and inspected the Top Ten aircraft. Inspections are done to ensure that all the aircraft are indeed stock, as they com e from the factory, w ith no unauthorized speed m odifications that m ay have helped w in the race.

W hile the race com m ittee w orked at the airport, the racers en joyed a trip to nearby histo ric St. A ugustine, the coun try 's o ldest city. T hat even ing , an ex tra special treat w as prepared. S ince th is race ce leb ra ted the start o f E m bry-R iddle as an insti­tu tion in 1926, a R oaring T w enties Party had been planned, com ­plete w ith costum es and m usic from that period.

To com plete the them e o f "R oo ts and W ings,” the C hapm an J. R oot fam ily graciously donated the use o f their private m u­seum facility fo r the party. We had a w onderful tim e as we sipped ch am p ag n e and w an d ered th rough in im itab le co llec tions o f v in tage cars, private tra ins, teddy bears, qu ilts , ch ina and Coca- C ola m em orabilia . T hen w e danced the n ight aw ay to the sounds o f big band m usic.

Announcem ent of winners - June 25T he scores w ere announced , W ednesday. A s usual, there w as

som e g lee and som e d isappoin tm ent. We w ere deligh ted to ac­cep t 15th place, as it w as m ore than tw o tim es better than w hat w e ’ve done before. It is fascinating that w ith in the top three fin­ish ing team s, the ages ranged from 20 to 80-plus. A ir racing is tru ly an activity that em braces all ages and w alks o f life.

T he aw ards banquet w as a gala affair, com plete w ith special gifts and speeches, a slide show w hich ch ron icled the race, and a special guest speaker. Jane M endolsohn, au thor o f The N ew York Tim es best-seller, I Was A m elia E a rh a rt, re la ted her ow n adventure by com paring the w riting process to that o f fly ing and read passages from her novel. She w as w arm ly applauded by the racers, m any o f w hom offered to teach her to fly.

Many people ask us why we air race. It is hot, sweaty, strenuous— and expensive. There are many reasons. The typical ones we talk about are the fun, the camaraderie, the education, the adventure. But in a very strong sense, air racing connects the women aviators of today with the true pioneers in this field: Amelia Earhart, Jackie Cochran, Bobbie Trout, Louise Thaden, and so many more who initiated and won the air races of yesteryear.

A ccord ing to A rt G reenfield o f the N a­tional A eronautics A ssociation, the flight is expected to earn Ruth and Bill a p lace in av iation h istory fo r the fastest trip around the w orld in a single engine plane. R uth described the flight as “ a fantastic adven tu re .”

T he E gyptian desert, beautifu l in spite o f its deso lation , w ould d isp lay a pa ir o f tracks in the sand as the only sign o f life. The people they m et w ere even m ore in teresting . W hile on a sight-seeing trip by car in M uscat, O m an, R uth and B ill cam e across a v illage in a m ountain oasis. T he ancien t-look ing , v il­lage rem inded R uth o f a scene from the B ible. O ne o f the n a ­tives opened his hom e to them and offered them tea, o ranges and grapes. He w as d isappoin ted they co u ld n 't spend the night.

Bill encountered a d ifferent sort o f hosp ita lity at ano ther stop: For $ 1,200. he cou ld take h is choice o f three w om en hom e as his w ife.

B ecause Indian authorities had recently apprehended som e gun sm ugglers using a private plane betw een the fo rm er Soviet U nion and India, R uth and Bill experienced a th ree-day delay for additional docum entation to land in B om bay. O ther than that, the trip w ent sm oothly w ith generally favorab le w eather co n d i­tions.

T heir total flight tim e w as 220 hours. T hey m ade 30 stops. T heir longest leg w as from H onolulu to L os A ngeles -1 2 hrs. 24 min. T heir norm al cruise altitude w as at 9 ,000 through 15,000 feet. T heir total flight d istance w as 38,543 m iles.

This w as not R u th ’s first experience w ith unusual flights. In 1991, R uth helped the A laska A irm en ’s A ssociation o rganize a flight from A laska to P rov ideniya, R ussia, w ith 34 aircraft, in­cluding R u th ’s. T his is believed to be the largest group o f civil aircraft to en ter the Soviet U nion at one tim e. F o llow ing that

flight, R uth assisted several p ilo ts in ob tain ing perm ission to fly to o r through R ussia. In 1992 she helped coord inate B ill’s flight around the w orld w ith Yuri K haritonov, the R ussian navigator from the 1991 trip.

D uring 1993, R uth coord inated , m ade arrangem ents and flew a th ree-C essna flight (three A m erican w om en p ilo ts, five A m eri­can m en p ilo ts and tw o R u ssian n av ig a to rs) to R ussia and M ongolia. At the last m om ent, they w ere den ied perm ission to fly through northern C hina. T he flight took about 21 days and covered 10,000 m iles.

In 1994. Ruth flew w ith Bill in h is C essna 210 to M exico, G uatem ala and R oitan, H onduras.

R uth is m arried to Jim Jacobs. She has tw o sons and four grandchildren . She becam e in terested in fly ing at age 6 w hile w atch ing airp lanes land and take o ff from D rew F ield in Tam pa. In o rder to be around a irp lanes, she jo ined the C ivil A ir Patrol at 16.

R uth bought a Taylorcraft L2 in 1969, found an instructor and learned to fly on a grass strip ou tside o f K alam azoo, M ich. In 1973, she w as sponsored by E sther B ennett W olf and jo ined the new ly organized L ake M ichigan C hapter. In 1974, Ruth and E sther (along w ith R u th 's son and a dog) flew from M ichigan to A laska in her C essna 182. S ince that tim e, Ruth has flow n up or dow n the A lcan H ighw ay five m ore tim es (once by herse lf in her hu sb an d ’s 170).

T he m ajority o f R u th ’s fly ing has been done in A laska, w here she and her husband had their ow n a irstrip next to their hom e about 100 m iles south o f A nchorage. T he airstrip w as gravel, less than 2,000 feet long w ith trees on one end.

S ince jo in in g the M ichigan C hapter, R uth helped organize and charter the C ook Inlet C hapter, w hich she chaired from its inception in 1977 to 1986. She also served as C hairm an o f the 1984 N orthw est Section M eeting in A laska.

She has been an active m em ber o f the A laska A irm en ’s A s­sociation , serving on the B oard o f D irectors from 1991 - 1994. She belongs to A O PA , EA A , N A A , O X 5 C lub and Ladies o f the Shrine.

When I accepted the assignment to re­visit the life and times of Pat McEwen, I considered it a slam dunk. After all, I had known Pat in college, 1 knew her family well, and— like most connected to the Wichita aviation community— I knew of her great enthusiasm for, and her consid­erable experience with, air racing.

Over the years, her participation in races and her leadership involvement with her beloved 99s organiza­tion regularly made the local and national news. 1 knew it would not be difficult to reconstruct the facts of her flying life. I visited with her husband Owen and he was both enthusiastic about the story and willing to supply me with a treasure of news clippings and photos.

Likewise, her son Drew, a member of the Raytheon (Beechcraft) management team, shared a large volume of facts and memorabilia about his mother. (Drew, by the way, acquired his mother's Bonanza and restored it to its original and unique paint design.)

With all this marvelous research in front of me, I quickly realized that the heart and soul of the story of Pat and her life as a 99 and as an air racer were not truly available to me. It’s actually a story of how the bonds of friendship and shared time at the controls of an airplane and the experience of working together to build and

strengthen an organization can bring women pilots together in a special and very meaningful relationship. It’s a story that can best be told by someone who has lived it. It was my great good fortune that Marilyn Copeland was available and willing to open up her heart and her memo­ries to write the following story of her good friend and sister 99. Enjoy.

blue 99. Pat even had her favorite airp lane, a beautiful new V M odel B eech B onanza, painted in a check­erboard pattern to m atch her sh in ­ing personality.

Pat started flying in 1959. She received her private license in 1961 a n d h e r c o m m e rc ia l a n d m ultieng ine ra tings in 1962. She ea rn e d h e r in s tru m e n t ra tin g in 1963, and then her in s tru c to r’s ra t­ing in 1965. A s she w orked her w ay up in the ra tings, she m anaged a h o u seh o ld , a ss is ted h e r hu sb an d O w en in h is business ca ree r and cared for the ir seven grow ing ch il­dren.

O n top o f all this, she m anaged to pursue the art o f aerobatics in her C itabria and Z lin , w hich w as m od i­fied w ith a 300 hp Lycom ing en ­gine. Even though Pat flew several o th er B eech p lanes , (in c lud ing a Travel A ir), she alw ays loved her B onanzas best. Pat w as a personal friend o f O live A nn B eech , w ho som etim es in v ited b o th o f us to lunch in her private d in ing room .

Pat jo ined The 99s in 1961 .1 first m et her at a K ansas C hap ter m eet­ing early in 1962. In those days, it was necessary to be voted into the o rganization . Pat served T he 99s as C hap ­ter M em bership C hairm an, C hapter C hair­m an fo r tw o term s, C o-chairm an o f SC

M eans C hairm an and International H eadquarters com m ittee . In 1971, Pat and I served as co-chairm en o f the 99s In ternational C onvention in W ichita, “ Fun in ’71 .” She and O w en hosted an antique airplane fly-in and buffalo barbecue fo r the en tire conven tion crow d at the ir country estate.

Pat served as C hairm an o f the P residen t’s W om en in Aviation A d­visory C om m ittee. She belonged to the Flying Farm ers, N ational Pilots A ssociation and N ational A ssocia­tio n o f F lig h t In s tru c to rs , and served as S ecretary fo r the A ero­batic C lub o f A m erica. Pat flew her first Pow der P uff D erby in 1961 and con tinued to fly in them for years thereafter. She also partic i­pated in In ternational A ir R aces, Sky Lady D erby, Fair Lady D erby and the D allas D oll Derby.

I flew w ith P at in one A ngel D erby and in m ost o f the Pow der P uff D erby races. F ly ing w ith Pat w as fun . O n e o f h e r trad em ark questions w as, “W hat is that up­com ing body o f w ater?’’ and, most often , o f course, it w as a m irage or a reflection . A nother w as “W here are w e?’’ She flew the airp lane and trusted m e to do the nav igating . T rust w as a big com ponent in our short 20-year, best-friend relation­ship. w ith one another. H ow ever, in the friendly com petitions o f the Pow der P uff D erby, we alw ays shared inform ation because we w ere and alw ays rem ained best friends.

Pat and I w ere a team on m any projects perta in ing to T he 99s and aviation . T hese projects included the dream , construction and dedica tion o f the first perm anent 99 H eadquarters bu ild ing in O klahom a C ity in 1978. Past 99 P resident Susie Sew ell was also a key figure in m aking this project happen.

We w orked on early p lans for the K an­

sas A viation M useum . Even on the day she d ie d , w e d is c u s s e d m a n y id e a s an d bra insto rm ed fo r a couple o f hours long d is tance . Pat had the righ t connections, yes, the right stu ff o f w hich dream s be­com e realities.

P a t’s short life o f 54 years ended Sept. 2 1 ,1 9 8 1 , from a m assive heart attack suf­fered at Snow B ird R esort in U tah w hile a ttend ing a S ou thw est Section m eeting, cam paign ing fo r m y elec tion fo r 99 P resi­den t in 1982. She had v isited w ith m e in A pril, co n fe rrin g her 99 ring , w ith m y

prom ise to run fo r presiden t, and to win. W h at a p ro m ise to fu lfill fo r m y best friend.

Pat M cEw en w as one o f a kind— sm art, ta len ted in m any w ays, gracious, hosp i­table. v ivacious and relig ious. She w as a g reat p ilo t, had super people skills, w as a fine m other, civ ic leader, as w ell as a per­son w ho em braced a positive attitude, and w as m y very best friend. She w as truly a role m odel to m e and one w ho helped w ith the W ind B eneath M y Wings.

Jacqueline Cochran correctionI recently received my May/

June edition of the 99 News and leafed through it in the usual man­ner. It was with great pleasure that I learned that Jacqueline Cochran was honored with a commemora­tive stamp. As I read the article, I was dismayed, even shocked, to see that she was credited in the 99 News, of all places, with being the first woman to win the Bendix Transcontinental Race in 1938.

Louise Thaden was the first woman to win The Bendix Trans­continental Race, and she accom­plished this feat in 1936.

Jacqueline Cochran is an ex­ample to us all, in her own right, of great achievement. I am sure that she would not want false credit given her. She did indeed

place first in the 1938 Bendix Race, but there was one who came before her in 1936.

This year, family and friends of Louise have worked to put to­g e th e r a flig h t o f various Staggerwings and other vintage aircraft to honor Louise’s win of the Bendix on its 60th anniversary.

The Staggerwing Beech Com­m em orative Tour w ill depart Youngstown Elser Metro Airport in Ohio on Aug. 27 and arrive in El Cajon, Calif., on the 29th with festivities planned on each side of the tour over the respective week­ends. Stops along the way will be m ade in B entonville , A laska, (hom e o f L ouise M. T haden Field), Wichita, Kan., Bartlesville and Oklahoma City, Okla. (at 99s Headquarters).

Pilot shortage threatens rebound

T he pilot population peaked in the late 1970s and has seen a steady decline since. If m ore people do not take up flying within the next five years, the $15 b illion-a-year general aviation industry w ill be in seri­ous trouble, say indus­try leaders.

“ O ur long-term suc­cess depends on being able to rebuild the stu­den t-p ilo t popu la tion ,” said Pat Boyarski, gen­eral m anager o f C essna’s single engine program.

T o d a y , th e r e a re about 650 ,000 p rivate , com m ercia l and a ir-tran spo rt p ilo ts. (P ro fessional p ilo ts m ake up a sm all percen tage o f the overall pilot population and th e re ’s no shortage— yet. T hat situation could sh ift if the pool o f p ilo ts con tinues to shrink.) T hat num ­ber w ill fall to 530 ,000 by 2000 at the cur­rent rate o f attrition , accord ing to pred ic­tions by the G eneral A viation M anufac­turers A ssociation (G A M A ).

W hy the declin ing num bers? F or one, product-liability law suits during the 1980s caused flying to be a m uch m ore ex p en ­sive undertak ing . A lso , com petition for d iscretionary incom e increased and sched­uled airline serv ice in a deregu la ted en v i­ronm ent grew , lessening the incentive for business people to fly their ow n planes.

H ow ever, led by leg isla tion p lacing an 18-year cap on p roduct-liab ility law suits, the industry is po ised fo r a com eback . B ecause C essn a’s production is set to start at fairly low levels and there is pent-up dem and for p iston-engine aircraft, indus­try observers say the com pany sh o u ld n ’t have a problem selling airp lanes at first. But w ithout studen t-p ilo t en ro llm en t in ­creases, th e re ’s difficulty in the long run.

“ W e’re not looking at a crisis in the next tw o years, but if nothing changes, it will be a crisis in five years ,” said D avid E llis, d irector o f research and developm ent at the N ational Institute o f Aviation Research.

G A M A ’s goal is 100,000 new student p ilo ts yearly , an ob jective the rep o rt’s au ­thors say is needed in o rd e r to build a stable p ilo t population and create dem and for p iston aircraft. T he high num ber is due in part to the fact tha t 34 percen t o f stu ­den ts d rop the activ ity each year and only 14 percent o f student p ilo ts earn their li­cense each year, according to FAA figures.

If the industry d o esn ’t w ork on getting a new genera tion o f pilo ts hooked on fly ­ing, general av ia tio n ’s an tic ipated takeoff w ill rem ain grounded.

Som e in the industry, E llis said, believe that it m ay be too late, but he thinks th ere ’s tim e to stem the tide, especially because

there is so m uch latent in terest in flying.

That latent m arket is potentially very large,” E llis said. “A ccording to the studies, i t’s so large it’s hard for som e o f us to believe.”

G A M A ’s re s e a rc h found that m ore than 1

m illion people in the U nited States, espe­cially p rofessionals in the “baby boom er” category, are qualified to fly and very in­terested in it.

C essna officials have said that they will be updating and rev ita liz ing the ir flight- tra in ing system , ca lled the C essna P ilot C en ter P rogram . T here are now 493 such cen te rs w orldw ide.

G eneral aviation, like a num ber o f other fields, can turn itse lf around w ith som e applied effort, said Shelly Snyder, G A M A spokesw om an.

Surveys show that the “rom ance o f fly­ing” is the m ajo r d raw ing card to the ac­tivity. Y ingling A ircraft Inc. in W ichita, K an., held a recent open house w hich a t­tracted m ore than 2 ,000 v isitors. (Forty- tw o o f them paid $25 each fo r a short in­troductory flight.)

M id-Atlantic Section MeetingBy Edith Fischer Hampton Roads Chapter

Beautiful, historic Charleston, S.C., was the site in May of a joint meeting of the Mid-Atlantic, South­east and Caribbean Sections. About 80 members and guests attended.

A w elcom e recep tion on Thursday was followed with a breakfast buffet on Friday and a long-range planning workshop dealing with the future of the 99s. Governors Gayl Henze and Vicki Sherman along with International President Joyce Wells and Inter­national Board Members Connie Wilds and Beverley Sharp pre­sen ted an overv iew o f the organization’s current status as reflected by the survey of mem­bers taken last year, followed by a discussion and Q&A session. The long-range planning workshop ended on a positive note.

A number of other workshops were held on Friday, then a shift in the pace of the day brought an evening of relaxation as we toured

old Charleston in horse-drawn car­riages through the historic Market Square area; we then enjoyed din­ner and entertainment at the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon building on East Bay Street— a truly delightful experience.

A gala luncheon was topped off by a delightful keynote speaker from Kentucky Blue Grass Chap­ter, Sheri Coin Marshall. Sheri kept us spellbound as she talked about her book. One Can Do It, her remarkable story of a deter­mined young female who lost an arm at age 3. She became a li­censed pilot and has gone on to encourage and teach other physi­cally impaired people to fly. In addition to other licenses and rat­ings, she is now in training to get her Part 135 license.

Altogether, the Joint Section Meeting was a huge success. We were informed, we learned, we exchanged views and we experi­enced the camaraderie which is so important and a significant aspect of member benefits.

G reater Seattle C hapterMembers held a Saturday

fly-in auction w hich raised S570 for a scholarship fund to be administered by the Chapter. The first $200 was turned over to Auburn Flight Service for Melissa Thomas, a high school student enrolled in the early morning flight studies taught at her high school through the ef­forts o f the FBO.

Through the program, stu­dents receive ground school aviation history and 16.5 hours of dual tlight at Auburn Airport. They cannot solo under the school d is tric t’s policy. The C hapter’s donation will help M elissa reach her goal. She plans a m edical career and hopes to use Hying in conjunc­tion with medicine.

Alaska ChapterMary Reid-Jensen was hon­

ored at a retirement ceremony for her 30 years of service to the Civil Air Patrol. She retired as a Lt. Col.

Mary learned to fly in the early 1960s in a Piper Colt. At that time, she was a single par­ent with four children. She had learned the m ajority o f the background for the written pri­vate exam through CAP. In 1964, she purchased a Tay lorcraft on floats for $ 1,750. she continued her flying activi­ties in the CAP as a mission pi­lot until 1990.

Mary worked at Anchorage radio stations KB YR and KFQD selling radio advertising for 30 years, during which time she flew clients out on fishing trips. —Melanie Hancock

have 38 Girl Scouts attend their meeting to complete work on their Aero Space Badges. The girls were treated to lunch and partici­pated in paper-airplane races. Karen Reed introduced female high school s tuden ts from Wadsworth, Ohio, to commercial aviation with a “Shadow Day.” Mary Leahy presented three pre­school classes to a day of aviation fun. which included a field trip to a local airport. Chairman Mary Ann Abbott and her husband Dick were featured in the May issue of AOPA Magazine. Mary Ann en­

rolled as a student in May of ’95 in AOPA’s Project Pilot. Dick, a 40- year pilot, served as her mentor. Mary Ann successfully completed the program by earning her private pilot rating in October of ’95. She found the Project Pilot program to be helpful at every step and rec­ommends it to any student pilot.

On May 25, at Skypark Airport in Ohio, members co-sponsored many events, including more than 120 airplane rides. They raised $1,150 and assisted in preflight briefing, by making pancakes, selling tickets, etc. Those helping w ere B onnie M orehead, Pam S prang , M artha C ase, C hris

North Jersey ChapterLinda Scully acquired the Lin­

coln Park Aviation Flight School early this year, on the heels of achieving her ATP rating last De­cember with the help of her AE Scholarship. Linda has been a flight instructor at this flight school, using her own Cessna Aerobat taildragger for spin train­ing, emergency maneuvers, basic aerobatics and tailwheel transition. She has recently been appointed Teterboro (N.J.) FSDO Aviation Safety Counselor.

Eastern Ontario ChapterA new record for this year’s

Poker Run was set! $1,500 in gross sales. Half of the net pro­ceeds was donated to the Canadian Precision Flight Team. Marlene Jacob won the first annual “Barrie C. Gomer Memorial Scholarship” at Rockcliffe Flying Club. She was chosen in recognition of her dedi­cation towards aviation in the past and her interest in pursuing a ca­reer in aviation. She will use the $3,000 award to earn her IFR.

Kitty Hawk ChapterAt our March meeting, we hosted two Girl Scout aviation ac­

tivities. Jane Tyner, an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector, presented a program on career opportunities in aviation for the girls partici­pating in the annual Great Raleigh Run-Around (a career explora­tion weekend for cadet and senior-level scouts) as well as partici­pants in the Pines High Adventure Program. “Women in Aviation,” an intensive introduction into aviation conducted over two week­ends.

In April, our Chapter members assisted FAA and NCDOT at the spring Wings Weekend in Greensboro, N.C. Members parked aircraft, registered participants and several members with CFIs gave flight instruction. The Chapter was recognized at the ban­quet on Saturday evening for its ongoing service to the aviation community.

Pikes Peak ChapterClancey Maloney, outgoing

chairman, found that her pilot jolt was abolished due to the recent disbanding of the charter operation for whom she had flown. Not to he outdone hy fate, she quickly found a pilot’s dream: She’s fly­ing for the Forest Service. Clancey enjoys mountain flying and is well qualified for the position. She served as instructor in the Moun­tain Flying Workshop for the Bo­nanza/Baron Pilot Proficiency Program, Inc. With the Forest Ser­vice, she flies a Cessna TV 206. She was initiated into the Forest Service w ith a rash o f forest fires— was on duty for 12 con­secutive days without a break as­sisting the team in pinpointing the slurry drops. A solution was found to finance our budget by accepting advertisem ents in our C hapter newsletter— $50 per ad. We are happy to report that our finances are now in the black. —Onila Winfrey

tremely successful Flying Com­panion Seminar at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. The classroom was filled to capacity with 47 flying companions, plus our own Chapter members. Our speakers were Valerie Perkins, CFII from O.C. Flight Center at JWA; Brenda Jackson, 99 and former Center Controller; Barbara Ward and E leanor Todd, CFI; Shirley McFall, Advanced Ground Instructor; Lori Lubline, ATC C ontro ller at O ntario A irport; Diane Myers, Captain for Conti­nental Airlines on DC-1 Os; and our hostess with the mostess, Chris Stulik, who orchestrated the whole affair as well as being one of the speakers. This is our biggest fund­raiser of the year, and so reward­ing when the companion evalua­tion sheets all came back in “E” for Excellent. Our companions left the seminar much more informed, excited about flying and with their interest piqued. We can all say, ’’Mission accomplished.”

Nebraska ChapterAmong the highlights of the activities in Atchison in June was the

opportunity to meet our adopted member. Merce Marti from Barcelona, Spain, who was inducted into the Forest of Friendship.

Merce, 27 years old, had just finished the Air Race of the Americas flying with fellow 99 Karole Jensen from Myrtle Beach, S.C. They flew a Rocket-converted Mooney called "Silver Bullet” and despite some problems, including a fuel transfer problem while hundreds of miles over the ocean, they were victorious in winning the race.

Our experience with Merce is a great example of what other Chap­ters might gain from adopting a Member at Large.

Wildflower ChapterThe Chapter sponsored a trip to

Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., for young authors of the best essay on "Why I want to go to Space Camp."

The winner of the essay contest was N anette N eal, age 12, o f Denison, Texas. She will be pro­vided with tuition to Space Camp and her airfare, worth approxi­mately $ 1.200, which was raised by pancake breakfasts, concessions stands and local dues. North Jersey Chapter had a very successful (200 hands) Poker Run with a new twist and further fund-raiser: a cafe at the last air­port which offered homemade des­serts and beverages.

U.S. Air Race Inc.A group of 63 people from 14

states flying 26 different make and model aircraft flew in the second annual U.S. Air Race held June 8- 13. This interesting, challenging cross-country event is flown dur­ing daylight hours under visual flight rules. Each individual air­craft is timed over a measured course and given a handicap,

which makes all aircraft equal at the start o f the event.

This year, the slowest aircraft was 130 mph and the fastest 285 mph. Thirty-one aircraft started in Durango, Colo., and ended in Kenner, La. There was excellent com petition , cam araderie and loads of fun.

$10,000 in prize money plus beautifu l wood trophies were awarded to the pilots and copilots for the top five place winners. Fifth place this year went to Lake Michigan 99s Mary Creason and Maisie Stears.— Information sup­plied by Marion P. Jayne. Presi­dent! Race Director

nual cross-country proficiency race sponsored by the Kansas 99s, will be held on Sept. 21 at Yingling Aircraft. Mid-Continent Airport, in Wichita, Kan. The Rally is open to all licensed pilots. DOROTHY PRICE GILLISdied June 17. She was an enthusi­astic 99 who took great pride in her Detroit Chapter’s annual Com­panion Flyer Course. Dorothy was a familair sight at Oshkosh where for 30 years she and husband Ken flew and exhibited their string of WWII War Birds: AL5-G “Senti­nel,” an L2-A “Grasshopper,” an lO-A “Bird Dog and a 1940 Piper J3 Cub. Dorothy logged many thousands of miles over the United States, Canada, Alaska and Ha­waii. From north to south, over highest and lowest elevations, she crossed and recrossed the country. She met the challenge of cancer as she did her aviation career: with courage and determination. The aviation world has lost another cou­rageous lady. — Brooks Powell, Northeast Kansas Chapter

Joe Carrigan, died from cancer on June 14. Joe was a great sup­porter o f The 99s, the A melia Earhart Birthplace Museum and a cofounder of the Forest of Friend­

ship in 1976. He was bom in 1916 and moved to Atchison when he was 3 years old. He was an execu­tive for Midwest Solvents Com­pany Inc. and active in many Atchison civic organizations.

His name is to be added to the EAA Memorial Remembrance Wall and his family plans to do­nate his WW11 replica SE-5A bi­wing to the EAA’s Sun ‘n Fun Museum in Lakeland, Fla.

J. Franklin Park. 49 1/2 of Mary Harwell Park, Colorado Chapter, died April 16 in Boulder, Colo. He was a first lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps during World War II and received his private pilot li­cense in 1974. He and M ary owned a Cessna 182 Turbo RG which they flew to Alabama to visit family several times a year. Frank worked as a timer in the 1995 Mile High Air Derby.
