The most important of all, to say a prayer of thanks for our many blessings, this we should do every day of the year. We all know that real happiness is cheap enough, yet how dearly we pay for its counterfeit. Thanks goes to the Michigan Chapter for finding us a wonderful new mem- ber, from Austrailia. Genni Roche, we are happy to have you as a Ninety- Nine. Ada Mitchell, the new governor of the Middle East Section, has in- jected a lot of new enthusiasm and interest in that area. I had the plea- sure of attending that Section meeting in Washington, D. C.? and found it very well attended and most interest- ing. Good work, girls. Start thinking of your new national officers, it will not be long before the nominating committee wheels start rolling in January. Try to pick girls who have a desire, drive and time to do the job well. It is a great honor to serve in any office of the Ninety-Nines. With about 16,000 licensed women pilots, I am sure we can find lots more good Ninety-Nine members, let’s try to find them. We want our organiza- tion to grow and grow, united we can do so much more for all women pilots and aviation in general. Do not go through life doing little things painfully, you were made to do great things grandly, happily. Flying is a good clean outdoor sport and an excellent mental diversion. Let’s all keep flying. We were greatly honored that the President of the United States sent us a telegram to be read to our group on this occa- sion. As you know, President Dwight D. Eisenhower is the only United States President ever to hold a pilot’s license. We thought you would like to publish a copy of the telegram of recognition to the women pilots of the nation from the President. who have com e into being w ith in the la s t 25 y ea rs , she m ay seem to be a m y th ica l person, but to those who w ere co n cu rren tly ac tive in av iation w ith her, she still is a very re a l p e r ­son. T hrough h er w ork and influence, w o m an ’s p lace in av ia tion w as w id­ened and m ade m ore secu re . Quoting from Rep. W m. H. F rom the beginning, A m elia w as a “ good” N inety-N ine leader. At h er suggestion the n am e of the o rg an iza­tion ind icates the n um ber of c h a r te r m em b ers . She w as its f irs t presiden t. F o r se v e ra l y ea rs she donated a trophy a t the N ational A ir R aces for the w inner of the W om en’s Closed C ourse event. F o r a y e a r or m ore she gave a h a t each m onth to the 99 who landed a t the g re a te s t num ber of a i r ­po rts during each 30 days. She ded i­ca ted h er f irs t book, “ The Fun of I t ” to the N inety-N ines. No m a tte r how busy she m igh t be, she could alw ays

A Memorial To HerOn Ju ly 2, 1937, the w orld w as sud ­

denly shocked by new s flashes th a t A m elia’s around-the-w orld flight w as in trouble over the P acific . It w as her unfinished flight. A flight w hich would have been ano ther “ f i r s t” for her reco rd of ach ievem en ts. The Ninety- N ines had lot a m ost ou tstanding m em b er.

W hat could they do to c a r ry on h er unselfish in te res t and en thusiasm for a ll w om en in av ia tion? Out of m any suggestions subm itted , the scho larsh ip p r o j e c t w as se t up as a “ living m e m o ria l” to her, the m ost am bitious united effort w hich the N inety-N ines had und ertak en to date.

The ResolutionThe idea w as brought into rea lity

w hen the New York-New Je rse y S ec­tion donated over $1200 to s ta r t the fund.

At the in te rna tiona l convention of the N inety-N ines in A lbuquerque, N. M., in Ju ly , 1941 under the p residency of B etty Gillies, a reso lu tion w as p ro ­posed and approved to se t up the “ A m elia E a rh a r t M em orial S cho la r­sh ip ” w ith a fund then to ta ling about $2500. So well thought out w as th is p ro ­posal th a t v ery few am en d m en ts have been n ecessa ry to keep it up-to-date.

A brief outline of the resolution (with notes of am en d m en ts in p a re n ­theses) :

Shall be known as the “ A m elia E a r ­h a r t M em orial S cholarsh ip F u n d .”

Shall be ad m in iste red by five t r u s t­ees of w hom two shall be p e rm a n en t tru s te es and th ree sha ll be elec ted for th ree y ea r te rm s. (The nam es of the cu rren t tru s te e s a re listed in the m em bersh ip ro s te r under C om m it­tees.)

N om inations for the elec tive t ru s t­

ees a re subm itted by the executive board for the annua l ballot.

The tru s te e s sha ll e lec t one of th e ir n u m b er as tr e a su re r . The tru s te e s sha ll deposit all m onies con tribu ted to the fund in a sav ings bank until it to ta ls $5,000, then it m ay be invested in secu ritie s of class A ra tin g by Moody (and stocks ra te d BBB or b e tte r by F itch ). All deposits, w ith ­d raw als and investm en ts sha ll be m ade in the nam e of “ A m elia E a rh a r t M em orial S cholarsh ip F u n d ” and w ith d raw als shall be signed by the tru s te e t r e a s u re r and one of the p e r ­m an en t tru s te es . T ru s tees sha ll sub ­m it rep o rt of th e ir ac tiv itie s and fiances a t each annua l convention.

Only the “ in co m e” from said fund shall be used to pay for the sc h o la r­ship aw ards.

The ob ject of the scho larsh ip fund shall be to provide an aw ard of $150 (now $300) for a m e m b er who h as had 200 hours or over of solo flying.

S cholarsh ipsThe scho larsh ip s aw arded in 1941

and 1942 w ere con tribu ted outside of the fund as the fund w as not yet su f­ficient to provide the n ec essa ry in ­com e. Then W orld W ar II in te rvened and not until 1946 w as fu rth e r concen­tra te d effo rts m ade to build up the fund to its p resc rib ed m in im um of $5,000. By 1947 sufficien t in te re s t from the sav ings deposits had accu m u la ted to finance the th ird scho larsh ip of $150. In 1948 the aw ard w as inc reased to $200 and in 1955 it w as fu rth e r in ­creased to $300. Continued generous contribu tions by the various C hap ters and ind iv iduals and in c reased ra te of incom e on investm en ts of the fund has m ade the inc reased aw a rd s possible. The am ount in the fund today re p re ­sen ts a lm ost in to ta l the am ount w hich has been con tribu ted , and each and every do llar is ea rn ing incom e from

w hich to pay the annual aw ards. E xpenses of adm in is te ring the scho lar­ship p ro jec t has been kept to a m in i­m um .

A scho larsh ip has been aw arded each y e a r since 1947 and a silver ann i­v e rsa ry scho larsh ip w as aw arded in 1954 in addition to the annual sch o lar­ship. W inners of the scho larsh ips a re listed in the m em bersh ip ro ste r. The scho larsh ip is offered to N inety-Nine m em b ers on a com petitive basis. A fter the app lica tions have been processed and voted upon by the tru stees , a panel of th ree hono rary judges chosen each y e a r from personnel prom inent in the av iation field outside of the N inety-N ine organization cast the ir votes to m ake the final decision on the w inner.

In rec en t y ea rs , the announcem ent of the com petition for the cu rren t scho larsh ip has ap p eared in the J a n ­u a ry or F e b ru a ry issue of the News L e tte r to provide sufficient tim e to p rocess the app lica tions and select the w inner in tim e to aw ard the scho larsh ip a t the annual convention.

Q ualificationsIn ad m in iste rin g the scho larsh ip p ro ­

jec t, the tru s te es have added to and su b trac te d from and am ended the qualifications of app lican ts until it h as s im m ered down to the following cu rren t basic req u irem en ts :

1. A ctive 99 m em b er in good s ta n d ­ing for a t least TWO consecutive years p rio r to the opening of the curren t fisca l y e a r (Sept. 1).

2. Two hundred solo hours (p re fe r­ab ly since acqu iring p riv a te ra tin g ).

3. A gree to use the ra tin g ce rtif ica ­tion or tra in in g acqu ired th rough the aw ard for a t least TWO y ea rs th e re ­a fte r.

4. A nnual ea rn ings of not less than $1,000; not m ore than $3,500. If m a r­ried , the h u sb a n d s’s incom e and fa m ­

O riginally the scho larsh ip w as lim ­ited to an in stru m en t ra tin g , but v e ry soon it w as expanded not only to cover any advanced flight ra tin g , but also to em b race o ther possib ilities in the ae ro n au tica l field such as control tow er opera to r, m eteorologist, ed u c a­tor, m echanic.

T hat y ea r shocking m any m ales in th is m a n ’s country, she piled up enough tra in ing hours aloft and passed a rig id succession of te s ts to becom e the youngest m em b er of the fa ir sex ever to win a p ilo t’s license in Ja p an . She soloed nea tly and g racefu lly cushioned an old biplane to land, the board of exam iners re lu c tan tly gave her top m arks. And so h e r colorful c a re e r as an a m a te u r av ia tr ix began, w hich neither w ar nor m a rr ia g e halted . A fter the w a r ’s end, all Ja p an e se pilots w ere grounded, but M rs. Y okoyam a w as determ ined and w ith h a rd tra in in g becam e J a p a n ’s firs t w om an to win p ilo t’s w ings since the end of the P acific W ar. H er fam e sp read ac ross the P acific and a few y ea rs ago, she w as invited to join the N inety-N ines, an organization hav ing som e of the w orld ’s m ost d istinguished lady fly ­ers, w ith h ea d q u a rte rs then in New York, now in O klahom a City, Okla. Again she w as the firs t Ja p a n e se to win this coveted m em bersh ip th is year, becom e the firs t w om an of the land to fly a je t.

On the ground or off the airfie ld , the petite lady c a rrie s out an asso rtm en t of im portan t jobs, a lw ays charm ing ly and gracefu lly , w hich is the w ay she flies her plane. She is a good m other and efficient business w om an. W ith her ta len t as a flyer and a business w om an she had long w an ted to go into business — in the blue yonder. She estab lished not long ago the Chuo Koku (C entra l A viation C om pany) w ith only one light p lane, a C essna w hich her husband pu rchased for her. Our A laska trav e lin g G eologists, F lo rence Robinson a n d F lo rence R ucker, have re tu rn ed w ith in te re s t­ing ta les and m any beau tifu l m ovies of th e ir p ic tu resque trip . T hey spent two w eeks flying over p a r ts of the U nited S ta tes and C anada to Lake M inchum ina, located abou t 150 m iles sou thw est of F a irb an k s , A laska.

T heir p ro jec t, believe it or not, w as to study sand dunes over an a re a 100 m iles long by 50 m iles w ide in A laska. They sound like “ w rong w ay C orri­g a n ’s ” to m e. N evertheless, w ith ex ­c item en t high and the th ro ttle full on, th e ir S uper Cub seap lan e lifted itself g racefu lly from the P o tom ac R iver and headed no rthw estw ard . A fter p a ss ­ing th rough C anad ian C ustom s a t C rane Lake, they continued to wing th e ir w ay th rough C anada, flying over L ake of the Woods and L ac du Bon­net to N orw ay H ouse, a h is to rica l old H udson’s B ay Co. P ost. At L ac La Ronge, the wind w as blowing so h a rd they w ent in c irc les try in g to ge t th e ir seap lan e to dock. They finally sa iled in b ack w ard s as did the local Bush P ilot.

At F t. M cM urray, the jum ping off p lace for the north , they v isited the fam ous ta r sands (sandstone fo rm a ­tion im p reg n ated w ith asp h a lt) . The sands w ere in te restin g but the town w as knee deep in m ud. F t. C hipew yan w as an o th er old h is to rica l P ost v is ­ited. It w as from h ere th a t M acK en­

zie s ta r te d his tr ip down the r iv e r nam ed a fte r him in 1789. At F t. Sm ith, they landed a t the foot of som e rap id s in the S lave R iver w hich flows along a t 12 m ph. F lo rence R ucker re a lly had to g rab the dock here. Then on th rough buffalo and a lot of bush country to Yellowknife, a m od­e rn town sim ila r but not as la rge as F a irb an k s . M odern conveniences w ere a delight. A bath tub a heaven ly sight.

At N orm an Wells, site of the Canol oil fields, F lo rence Robinson got her “ d ig n ity ” a bit w et w hen she fell into the lake as they a ttem p ted to dock. W hile spending the n ight a t F t. Good Hope, they along w ith approx im ate ly 50 Ind ians saw an old w estern movie in the local school house. H ere the m en sa t in front, the w om en in back. This v illage also has a 100 y ea r old C atholic church w hich has m any nain tings and decorations by the old fa th e rs who had used fish oil to mix th e ir pain ts.

Two days w ere spen t a t Aklavik, C anada, the m etropolitis of the north. T heir no rth ern m o st point w as a round tr ip to T uk tuyak tuk (P o rt B raban t) on the A rc tic O cean w here they land ­ed the f irs t day of the season th a t the ice w as off shore. This is located 100 m iles n o rth eas t of Aklavik. After crossing the R ichardson M ts. to the w est, they v/ent th rough custom s at Old Crow. F a irb an k s w as indeed a w elcom e sight. T heir cabin gave a gorgeous view of Mt. M cKinley. Their neighbor (unusual to have one in th a t country) had even p lan ted a garden for them .

To add fu rth e r to the en joym ent of th e ir trip , they had an opportunity to t ry ano ther m ode of flying — a heli­copter ride.

All in all, they flew around 150 hour? in th e ir sean lane and landed on some 30 or 40 lakes around Lake Munch- um ina.

T hey a re thoroughly sold on A laska, hav ing ju s t previously spent five y ears th e re , and hope to re tu rn next su m ­m er. Since A lask a’s “ cold s to ra g e ” is less dam ag ing to a irp lan es than our delightfu l w ea ther, “ Old F a ith fu l” v/as secu rely tied down and given a fond pa t before they boarded a P an A m erican C lipper on Oct. 2nd for the s ta te s . F o r exc item en t and beauty, they feel th e re is no p lace like A laska. C are to try it?

In speaking before th is g roup and the ir guests a t the evening banquet, Mr. Ja m es Pyle, A cting A d m in is tra ­tor, C. A. A., told how our o rg an iza ­tion has a p a r t to p lay in help ing to solve the P ro b le m s of T ra ffic Con­trol. He spoke of the trem endous growth, utilization, tra ffic control cen ­te rs and national defense. In 1955, we had a to ta l of two m illion personal flying hours. In 1965, th is figure is ex ­pected to rise to 2,750,000; 1970, 3,500,- 000 while the m ilita ry w ill p robab ly reach 15 million flying hours by 1965. All of this m eans prob lem s in: com ­m unication, inadequa te equipm ent, high altitude control, a irp o rt and transoceanic prob lem s. H ow ever, the fu ture p icture of av ia tion is not rea lly a black one for th e re a re m any sources of help: rad a r, Air D efense C om m and, closed circuit TV, ra d a r sa fty signals, peripheral com m unication , assign ing individual frequencies, au tom ation and high speed a irp o rt te rm in a ls . In clos­ing, he urged the ac tive support of all aviation groups since only th rough an energetic and unified action can a solution be found to the problem s th a t face all aviation a ir tra ffic control.

His rem a rk s w ere preceded by the introduction of d istinguished v isito rs by the m istress of cerem onies, B lanche Noyes. T h e y included besides the above m entioned: Mr. and M rs. She is anxious to m ake ce rta in read in g m a te r ia l av a ilab le to us, w ith board approval, w ithout re leasin g our m em b ersh ip list. She w an ts us to be constan tly a b re a s t of the la tes t ae ro ­n au tica l in form ation . She has good sug ­gestions for m ak ing the News L e tte r even m ore in te resting . In our “ sh y ” little w ay we s ta te d th a t som etim es it does ra th e r rea d like a m enu. I ’ve concluded th a t flying people a re the ea tin g est people anyw here .

H ad a fasc in a tin g ta lk w ith N ancy T ier, who learn ed to fly w hen th e re w e re n ’t any b rakes, enclosed cock­pits, in s tru m en ts or o the r tr iv ia like such. She told of hav ing to land every few m inu tes until the engine cooled; of clim bing out to ju m p w hen she couldn’t pull out of a f la t spin only to have h er shifted position change the b alance and r ig h t the plane a t so m e­th ing like 200 fee t; and of sending a te leg ram to Mr. T ier w hich re a d : “ D e­

layed, s tre e t being re p a ire d ,” instead of “ s tru t being re p a ire d .” I could only say th a t the ea rly b irds ce rta in ly o v er­w orked th e ir g u ard ia n angels.

G eorge Beckw ith, an a irp o rt chum , and I m anaged to s tea l the A eronca at N orth P h ilade lph ia A irport la s t w eek only to get a w hite light a t the end of the runw ay because the s tuden t had finally a rriv ed . Though in stru c to r Bill K inkle foiled cu r f irs t a ttem p t, we m an ag ed to run off w ith the plane a few m inu tes before sunse t — enough tim e for each of us to get a landing in. I flew from the back sea t and landed in the best g rassh o p p er fa sh ­ion. But it occurs to m e th a t you should be ab le to fly from fron t seat, back seat, inside out or upside down if y ou ’re any good a t all. I t ’s im portan t to fly a t least once a w eek or the ru st g a th e rs and you’re bound to give an am azing ly poor dem onstra tion or else com e down w ith a thud, ne ither of w hich is to be recom m ended .

Food w ith friends was our topic this tim e a t the P a r a ­dise Inn Motel n ea r C ham paign, 111. Dora D ougherty as hostess and guide took us over the 1956 AWTAR route and with help from H elen G rienke gave us highlights of the jaun t. It should have been sung to the “ L adies from 49 P lan e s .’’ Know we would all have loved to be th e re and increased the num ber to a hundred . T im e to s ta rt thinking of next y ea r and how we can help m ake it a b igger and better-known race.

D ecem ber 1 is the next m eeting date. Hotel Rogers in Bloom ington, 111., with Helen G rienke as hostess, will be the place and 6:30 the tim e. With only five m em b ers and th ree prospective m em bers p resen t t h i s tim e we can surely im prove.

Our secretary , F lorence M usser, has been to su rgery and is about read y to go home. So glad for we rea lly m iss her. She rea lly keeps us all in touch with each other and even ts of m a jo r im portance to us.

A gain we have had two m eetings in the la st m onth. On the 6th we had a m eeting a t the In tern a tio n al A irport to d iscuss our p lans for ano ther a ir ­port day and to assign som eone to take the G irl W ing Scouts on a tour of the a irp o rt. We a re sponsoring this group and som e of our g irls will do the teach ing and o thers will p a rtic i­pate in th ings such as the airport tour. R uth D eerm an and Ruby H ays a re the tour lead e rs and will set up th e ir own tim e w ith the scouts. These a re our fu tu re 99’s, so m ake it good.

R uth D eerm an , our sectional gov­ernor, explained the point system on our new contest for th is year. It is a trophy aw arded to the 99 who has com piled the m o s t points between O ctober 1, 1956 and M arch 15, 1957. Po in ts a re given for m eetings a tten d ­ed, a irm ark in g , w inning a flying con­test, se a rch and rescue, new ratings, landing a t new a irp o rts , publicity and ta lk s and lec tu res . Also the unit or ch ap te r having the la rg e s t num ber of m em b ers p a rtic ip a tin g in the contest will receive a cash bonus.
