PURPOSE OF THE EDCOMM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The program is designed to introduce Interns to the experience of Christian teaching andprovide them with an understanding of the exciting possibilities and practicalities that acareer in teaching holds. Support from EdComm is provided throughout the year, throughthe EdComm Internship Learning Program, face-to-face visits and a feedback session atthe conclusion of the course.

Many Anglican and other Christian schools and colleges have expressed the need for morecommitted and capable Christian people to join the teaching profession.

The EdComm Internship Program provides practical experience, in an Anglican or other Christianschool, for teachers in training and school graduates considering teaching as a career.

It is designed to be compatible with:

• Anglican Schools

• other like-minded Christian schools

• the Youthworks Year 13 Discipleship Program, and

• Youthworks College.

The school promotes the Internship to current Year 12 students and identifies possible

candidates for the program. Each school directly employs the student for two days a week

and registers the Intern with EdComm to participate in the Internship program. EdComm

recommends that Interns be remunerated for their contribution to school life.

Alternatively, the school may express interest in participating in the Internship Program and

request that EdComm assist in finding potential candidates to interview for the position.

A current Youthworks student applies for an Internship position within a school for two days a

week. For more information about Youthworks College go to www.youthworkscollege.edu.au.

To find out more about the Year 13 Discipleship program and the school experience pathway

go to www.year13.net

There are two pathways into the EdComm Internship Program:

1. Directly through the school:

2. Through the Youthworks College or Year 13 Program:

Intern Placements

Commencement and recommended time allocation

It is suggested that Interns commence their placement in Weeks 3-4 of Term 1. This allows each school the opportunity to establish programs for the Interns.

Interns:

EdComm recommends a two day per week placement (excluding weekends) in term time. Schools may wish to negotiate more attendance weeks, taking into account other commitments such as University/other study/part-time work and church roles, such as youth group leader.

OR

By negotiation between the Interns and the school.

Note: For YW Year 13 program Interns – Two day per week placement (excluding weekends) in term time over 34 weeks which allows for blocks of time to complete the Youthworks Year 13 program to attend O and D weeks, one-week Fiji preparation week and four weeks for the Youthworks Year 13 Fiji mission trip.

OR

By negotiation between the Interns and the school.

Supervisors: Term time only.

7

The Role of the School/College

The school/college will:

o select a supervisor who will oversee the Internship

o provide appropriate orientation, including child protection training, for the Intern

o negotiate payment terms directly with the Intern and provide them with appropriate documentation

o keep a copy of the Intern’s Working with Children Check.

The Role of the Supervisor

The supervisor will be a classroom teacher, a teacher working within a faculty or a staff member in the Chaplaincy department. Supervisors:

o must be present, supportive and engaged with the Intern and will meet

with them regularly

o will explain relevant school/college expectations for staff to the Intern at the commencement of placement

o will collaboratively set the Intern’s program/timetable with the Intern

and relevant school/college staff

o will provide a timetable to the Intern that will be considerate of the Intern’s other commitments, eg. Study. Any changes to the timetable due to camps, excursions and so on will be negotiated with the Intern by the supervisor, ahead of time

o may request an orientation session with an EdComm staff member (prior

to the Intern’s commencement) to discuss the Internship placement, the parameters, appropriate roles and reporting/evaluation procedure

o will be required to fill in a brief report/evaluation form for:

• the Intern and • the Internship Program – feedback for improvement (in

November).

8

The Role of Anglican EdComm

Anglican EdComm will:

o provide supervisors with a digital copy of the Supervisor’s Handbook

o plan and lead an orientation session for all Interns prior to

commencement of the Internship

o facilitate the program and keep track of progress in the EdComm Internship Learning Program (a face-to-face and online course)

o meet with each Intern and their Supervisor once in Semester 1 at the

placement college/school

o provide regular online feedback for Interns during the year. An online feedback form will be provided to Interns and a final feedback meeting will take place for all Interns at the end of the year

o provide an online feedback form for supervisors.

Upon successful completion of coursework and placement, Anglican EdComm Interns will be provided with a certificate of completion, outlining both the purpose of the program and an overview of coursework. This may be a a valuable addition to an Intern’s CV.

The Role of the Intern in the School

An Intern’s role should be varied – it is important to recognise that this is a support role. It would be of benefit to the Intern if they had access to a range of activities in their role over the year, so they are able to explore their capability and aptitude across a variety of age groups.

Suggested activities Assisting with:

o Chapel, CRU/lunchtime groups etc – collaboratively establishing the program, presentations, music, set-up and so on

o Musicals, bands, choirs – if the Intern has appropriate skill sets and interest

o Sports coaching o Excursions (could be overnight if they do not clash with the Intern’s other

commitments) o Small groups in the library, eg. running a lunchtime story/craft group

with a Christian focus o Small groups in the classroom or learning support faculty (under

supervision and following a prepared lesson).

General information

o Interns may also be assigned to assist with a particular class, eg. half day per week in a Kindergarten class

o Interns may attend professional development meetings that are considered appropriate and educative

o The Intern will have a Working with Children Check (volunteer or paid, dependent upon the financial arrangement).

Suggested Payment Options for Interns

EdComm recommends that Interns be remunerated for their contribution to school life. In determining the level and form of remuneration please consider the circumstances of the Intern, particularly if they are studying or are needing to support themselves through part-time employment. As a guide, some options currently used in participating schools that might be considered are: Option 1 (recommended by EdComm) Pay an allowance based on a pro-rata Teacher’s Aide salary Option 2 Negotiate an agreed allowance that is fair for the Intern and the circumstances of the school Option 3

For students studying through Youthworks Year 13 and Youthworks College, the school community may also provide additional support for the Intern’s fundraising for the Fiji Mission Trip

Note: Any financial understanding between the Intern and the school is a matter to be negotiated directly between both parties as EdComm is not equipped to facilitate these arrangements.

Payment to EdComm by Participating Schools

EdComm provides the Internship Program to schools at the following rate per intern:

o EdComm Member Schools: No charge o Non-Member Schools: $600 per intern

Schools considering participating in the Internship Program should contact Anglican EdComm [email protected]
